Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

First visit to the Coastguard - stunning location at the bottom of the cliffs and right on the beach. Great welcome and attentive staff throughout our visit. We'd preordered the festive 3 course dinner and it was fabulous, even enjoyed the sprouts. Absolutely will return...in the future.More

We turned up without a booking, but they had a table and squeezed us in. The starters were excellent and we expected great things for the mains, my husbands was good but mine was very cold, I would've sent it back but they had taken...quite a long time to come out and I didn't want to wait when everyone else was eating. The service was slightly lacklustre as was my dessert. I expected better things, especially as it wasn't the cheapest place to eat. Such a great location but disappointing.More

Lovely food, waitress and location. Sadly we were very surprised to not know that cash was not acceptable until we received the bill. Not made obvious anywhere that caught my eye other than a sign hidden behind a door on the way out. This did...cause us a problem. Personally this restriction is not for me, but everything else was nice.More

We were up from Cornwall and came upon this place and nearly didn't go in as thought it was closed. Best choice we made all day 😍 being a proper fussy Cornish maid with food , I have to say could not complain about any...of it! Bar staff were proper helpful and lovely , the food was great! We had starters which were nice 😊 Duck and Beef mains were to die for and as we say in Cornwall the afters / dessert were proper good. . highly recommended, not the cheapest but what is cheap these days . Worth a visit if this way 🙏More

8/10/23 - late afternoon beer St Margaret's Bay - The Coastguard We three guys were testing combining going camping and on a booze cruise to Calais. We arrived in the campsite, set up and decided to drive to the nearest attraction/beach of St Margaret's Bay...which we have never been to. After a late afternoon wander on the pebble beach and chalky flat outcrop we opted for a drink in this ' historic' and ' unpretentious' pub in the garden overlooking the sea before the sun disappeared behind the cliff. We grabbed a free table by the beach path fence in the empty garden. Two of us went into the relatively modern pub to survey the drinks and get some beers in. Maybe the original historic pub has been washed away in a storm and this was built to replace it of the original had so many extensions it was unrecognisable? It was busy inside and people including families were enjoying the meals as well as the drinks. The polite and friendly Polish barmaid served us at the bar and we got a couple of Shepherd Neame's Master Brews (3.7% at '4.6' each - so much for being unpretentious!) and a Bear Island IPA (4.8% at '5.8'). The total bill was £15. We returned to our picnic bench table to find the beers were tasty and good. Other people occupied the other tables so it became quite busy. By 16:20 the sun had disappeared behind the cliff so it got quite chilly and we left the table having finished our beers anyway. I asked the barmaid about the opening times and was told they close at 6/7pm on a Sunday depending on business otherwise it is 20:30 on a weekday usually. After using the clean toilets we left at about 16:25 happy. It looked like it was getting emptier outside as the sun had set behind the cliffs but it was still busy inside. We continued our exploring the beach, going beyond Noel Coward's beach house at the far end. Altogether a nice excursion with a pleasant pint with a view.More

I was looking forward to a Sunday roast… we were seated and then had to wait sometime before any order was taken. We were not told which dishes were unavailable before ordering. My 1st choice was roast beef, which was not available. My second choice...was roast chicken and the order was taken to the kitchen this time, only to be informed shortly afterwards that this is also not available. I was offered pork belly which I do not recall seeing on the menu and it was poor, so dry and salty. The initiative of the staff was good because without me complaining, they automatically reduced the bill because they knew this was not good service. My first and last visit.More

One of the best things we did during our London vacation was take a day trip to Dover, and the Coast Guard Pub was the perfect ending to a fantastic day. We rode the train from Victoria Station and toured the castle in the morning....At the recommendation of the helpful castle staff, we then hiked the awe-inspiring Cliffs of Dover to the town of St. Margaret's Bay. There, we had dinner at the Coast Guard Pub. A little chilled from the windy cliffs, we started with curry soup, which was freaking delicious. While famous for their fish and chips, we just ate them the night before. Instead, we learned that since it was Sunday, their menu featured a British tradition of a roast with crispy potatoes, root vegetables, gravy and Yorkshire pudding. That’s what they’re realty known for. We also enjoyed a variety of UK craft beers, and our waitress even arranged for a taxi to take us back to the train station in Dover. The service, the food and the view at the Coast Guard Pub were each more spectacular than the other.More

The incredibly welcoming and helpful staff provided us with excellent food, on the fine terrace overlooking the sea. I highly recommend to spend some quality time on this beautiful spot between the White Cliffs of Dover and the shingle beach at Deal.

Our walking group had an excellent Sunday lunch on the tables outside overlooking the sea. The food was great, a good range - nut roast was particularly popular, as was the HUGE fish and chips. Staff were really obliging and helpful to us, we were...are large group and they helped us find chairs so we could all sit round one table. All in all, a great choice for a beach front pub.More

Used to come here years ago, then once owners moved on we stopped coming. However today as it was a nice sunny day we decided to give it try. Wow! So glad we did. Both chose the fish and chips and it was cooked to...perfection, homemade mushy peas were the best I’ve ever tasted. The staff were friendly and efficient, even asking if we would like a jug of tap water with our meal without having to request it. The sea scenery is always an added bonus, already looking forward to our next visit.More
