We would like to welcome you to our Country family run pub. We pride ourselves on being traditional and serving our homemade meals and serving local hand pull ales. We are Dog Friendly and perfectly located half way on the historical Hull to Hornsea Railway tract for those who enjoy cycling or walking. The Track is now a very popular cycle track for all abilities. The track is actually a section of the larger more well known 'Coast to Coast' Trans Pennine way were individuals take on the challenge of cycling from Hornsea to South Port totalling 215miles.

We ate here for a family birthday last week. Service was good although no staff wore any visors which I was surprised about as some stood really close as they were serving food and collecting plates. We took advantage of the eat out to help out scheme only to find the prices had increased from the menu we had viewed on the website which seemed a bit of a con, however, it was still a bargain. The food itself was very nice and all meals were plentiful so we would definitely return. I think improvements could be made by possibly taking customers temperatures on arrival and taking contact details for the track and trace system - nobody asked us for any contact details and i wasn't sure if there was anything we needed to do to register our details as nobody said anything. I would also feel safer if staff wore visors which seems the norm in most other places right now.

Thank you for taking the time to review us Emmag1208. We are very sorry if you did not feel totally comfortable with your visit to The Railway. We do take customer's contact details when they make a reservation, and if we have customers arrive without a booking, we take details for the Track and Trace system at the welcome booth. I'm not sure how you could have slipped through this procedure and can only sincerely apologise. Lovely family lunch

We attended as a group of 13 made up of 3 families. We couldn’t fault the service for such a big party with all our drinks and dishes being served exactly as ordered. I enjoyed the garlic mushrooms and the lasagne and was not at all disappointed with these pub classics. Those who had steak pie commented that it was the best they had eaten out. There was an abundance of gravy served with it which was enjoyed with any remaining chips at the end of the meal. Thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Sunday Lunch

We were here a month ago on a Sunday lunch time just for a drink after one of our many walks and noticed how popular this place was. We decided at that time that we would come back for lunch one Sunday. We arrived about 5pm and found the place to be reasonably quiet with plenty of tables available. We soon found a table and ordered our sunday roasts (small mixed meat). We wer,e not dissapointed the meal was far from small with pleanty of meat, all of which melted in the mouth. All the vegetables were well cooked, crisp and not over cooked and all served with a gravy boat full of rich meaty gravy. We would recommend and will be back, thanks fro a great meal.

We popped in for a quick family

We popped in for a quick family tea, we had a large haddock and chips (what was large) a traditional steak pie and I had a chips shop platter what was amazing Pattie, sausage, scampi fish Goujons chips , gravy and mushy peas. Was that much I struggled to finish it. It was hot and tasted amazing... this was our first time and we would highly recommend this pub.

Celebration 🎉 birthday meal

Fantastic birthday meal with family for mum. Made very welcome from the moment we walked in. Even Archie our dog was spoiled with water,treats and a blanket. Food was amazing dads very particular where he has fish but he said it’s probably the best fish and chips he’s eaten in a restaurant. Mum had the fish too and the smaller size was just the right amount for her appetite. The chicken curry with half rice and homemade chips, popadom and naan bread was also yummy 😋. Will definitely be returning soon.

Welcome return....

It feels rather strange writing this review, it has been several months since we were able to dine out, due to the Covid-19 lockdown. We called here for dinner on the first Saturday after lockdown was eased, we have been to the Railway Inn on several occasions and never had a bad experience. While it might not be fine dining the food is freshly cooked, wholesome, and very tasty. While we were socially distanced in the dining area you felt safe, wearing face masks when entering and departing the premises, overall, it was a pleasant experience. The staff, as always were friendly and helpful. It is good to see that as a business they have survived the Covid emergency. Would we recommend, most definitely yes!

Good food and very good service

Just out on a pleasant drive and decided to stop at the Railway Inn for lunch, this considering the covid 19 situation has been handled very professionally by the staff totally hassle free, served by a young lady who couldn't do enough to please. I had large fish which the beer batter was perfect crisp tasty not greasy, trice fried chips beautiful, my wife chose the warm marinated sweet chili chicken salad which she thoroughly enjoyed. Well done to all at the Railway Inn.

Very poor meal

We’ve been coming here for years and I have even had my 80th birthday here with all my family. Usually we very much enjoy it. We came on Friday for the first time since lockdown and we were very disappointed in the food. The plates used to be nice and hot - the waitresses would often tell us not to touch them! But this time they were very very cold and as a result the food was barely lukewarm - you’d expect at least the inside of the pie to be warm but it wasn’t. Instead of having vegetables in a separate dish, they were just thrown onto the cold plate. Amongst the vegetables there was a carrot that was just broken in half instead of sliced. The service was good but sad to say we won’t be coming back as it is far too expensive for such a poor meal. Very disappointed.

August Belated Mothers Day Meal

My sister and I visited The Railway on Sunday 2nd to celebrate a belated Mothers Day. Yesterday was the first time our mum had, had the confidence to venture out since lockdown. The staff worked extremely hard and were very professional, which under these difficult circumstances made us feel very safe. Our roast dinners did not disappoint, I've not seen my mum eat so much in a long time, she even had room for a white chocolate and strawberry cheesecake. Well done Railway and it's fantastic to see you back open after lockdown.

LOVE THIS RESTAURANT

Just love The Railway, it’s the best place for food, staff and price. If you’ve never been you have to visit as it’s well worth it. We went on Friday 25 September and felt very safe, all staff and customers had visors/ face masks on and plenty of hand gels around. You will never go home hungry and just go home with a nice feeling of relaxation of having a nice afternoon or evening. Looking forward to returning 😀

Shame to have to leave a negative review as previous visits have been lovely. Drinks came after the food which wasn't brilliant One of the orders was a veggie roast, on the menu it states quorn sausages but they didnt arrive, when i asked the waitress she said they had ran out, meal sat going cold whilst they fetched the vegetarian gravy. Vegatables for the rest of the food brought in a small desert bowl rather then the silver platter they usually come in (possibly something to do with covid) Gravy thin and watery. Meat dry. Meat pie soggy. Very disappointing as The Railway Inn has always been a favourite. Please return to your high standards!

I went to The Railway Inn today with my husband for Sunday lunch, having not been for at least ten years. If it wasn't quite such a long trek from our home, we would go almost every week if today is anything to go by. We both had a Sunday roast, he had the standard size and I had the small plate version as that is more than enough for me. The meal was absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection and more than sufficient, even the smaller size was a bit much for me! Sadly, no capacity left to accommodate a dessert, but what was going by to other tables looked divine. The staff were all friendly and helpful as well. We will definitely be going back. Highly recommended.

Have been here quite a few times, and always been very happy with my meal, but last Sunday we went for the lunch, to say I was bitterly disappointed is an understatement, I'd asked for the pork and had not 1 slice just all bits, I felt it had been scaped of the table with their hands and thrown on my plate. I was offered a replacement but I'd already been put off, was brought a small plate with sliced Pork on which by that point it was too late, we never even got a discount. So will certainly never go again.

Great new lunch time menu

We have been coming here for years as we live nearby and have always enjoyed both the food and friendly service. A new lunchtime menu has been introduced for October and November with various options across three courses which change on a daily basis. What great value this is at £7 for one course and £9.50 for two courses. We have enjoyed this menu three times so far and all courses have been excellent. It is so nice to see so many new meals available. We also now use the online booking system which is so simple and easy to use.

A nice meal but room for improvements

A nice meal but some faults that need to be addressed. We came without a booking as the weather had turned and our trip Hornsea was a wash out. We were seated in the pub which was nice but definitely felt a bit dated. Unfortunately there were a number of flies buzzing about which was probably due to the rain as the place is very clean and our table was clean. Our drinks and food ordered were taken promptly. The portions are generous! I ordered the steak pie which was filled with tender chunks of steak and had a lovely shortcrust pastry topping. The steak was a bland though. Needed some good seasoning, prehaps bay leaf and thyme would help but I also felt the sauce lacked any real flavour. I prefer a steak in Guinness or red wine. That’s not to say it wasn’t nice but it wasn’t amazing. The accompanying chips were delish and not the usual frozen rubbish you expect in a pub. Vegetables were well cooked but unseasoned. Tossing them in some butter and extra virgin olive oil would go nicely with the meal. There was definitely a feeling that we may have been forgotten after we’d finished the meal because there was a long time before anyone came to clear our plates and unfortunately due to the number flies buzzing around it was quite unpleasant having to swat them away from the food that was leftover on the plate. Dessert was disappointing unfortunately the treacle sponge that I ordered was not home-made nor was the custard, it definitely was that artificial brand of bright yellow custard. It would’ve been nice if it was a home-made although a lovely treacle sponge very moist it just tasted shop bought. I Again after finishing our dessert there was a long wait before anyone came to clear our plates. By this point we had got fed up and I sent my partner to the bar to ask for the bill. I would definitely return hopefully minus the flies and a bit more for attentiveness from the waiting staff .

We are so busy at this challenging time and our staff are stretched at times, we hope this will become easier as time goes on. I must say the flies have been immense this year and we are now in full swing of the harvest, we do try to keep windows closed, but unfortunately this is not always the case. We hope to welcome you back in the future.
