We last visited this establishment approx. 50 years ago, when it was on the main road and was a meeting place after rugby on Saturday nights. So it was a trip down memory lane. We were delighted to see that very little had changed. the...More

Great atmosphere. The fish pie was excellent and everyone at the table enjoyed their meal. Service was a but sluggish at first but picked up when the boss came on the scene.

A couple of days ago I visited The Highwayman for lunch after a number of years. When I first drank in this establishment in the 1970s it was a typical english country pub and a very pleasant one. Today it is still that lovely old...More

We visited on Friday 18th August for the first time, despite having lived fairly locally for 25 years. We wanted to eat somewhere new for my husbands birthday. Lovely cheerful atmosphere inside. I had the mussels to start with fresh bread. DELICIOUS! Best mussels I've...More

Read the review of Michael O ( from it would appear a Queen's English / Shakesperian speaking enclave of London) and was shocked that the Highwayman had allegedly plunged so far that it was allegedly no longer capable of taking basic instruction from its visitors....More

We are always deeply saddened when we fall below somebody’s expectations and the high standard we set and will always discuss them and try to put systems in place if we find a systemic failure that needs addressing. We have found the best way to...More

Description
The Highwayman Inn is located in a beautiful hamlet near Checkendon, on the Berkshire, Oxfordshire border, only an hour from London and 20 minutes from Reading and Henley on Thames. The pub dates back to the 16th century and still retains some of its original characteristics. Our aim is to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in comfortable surroundings in which to enjoy our award winning food. We are committed to using local suppliers and produce with above all an eye for quality. If things go wrong or are not to your taste then please talk to us. We are genuine people that work really hard and care about what we do. We are always happy to listen to comments that will help us to improve our business and product. We want you to have an experience that is what you wanted and expected. It is disappointing enough to know that we have not given the best of ourselves but to read it later on the internet when it could have been dealt with at the time is frustrating and upsetting.Whether in my establishment or any other talk to the staff treat them with respect and they will work that much harder for you.
