I took my son here for lunch as we love the views from the conservatory and you rely on the food to be good. We had the moules marineres which were excellent. Plump juicy mussels, real chips and served with all the right bits and pieces. Cheerful service and reasonable prices. It is one of our regular destinations and rightly... More

Had my tea on a Monday evening, food is freshly cooked to a high standard, lovely menu with plenty choices & not your usual pub grub - this is a cut above. Lovely staff.

Firstly can I just say thank you for making me giggle so much reading your responses, my husband is giving me very strange looks! I totally understand the owner wanting to respond to negative comments which may be misleading or actually untrue, it is, after all, their business, and there are always two sides to every story. We booked really... More

We have friends that live not too far from Hexham and it was their suggestion that we should eat at the Rat Inn. It suited us all since we were staying at Gosforth Park and so it was a relatively short drive away. I did a little homework on Trip Advisor and found some interesting assessments with some fine rebuttals... More

OK, so this was a last minute booking for lunch, but the place was not busy so there can be no excuse for our experience. Seated next to the restaurant door in an empty "extension" to the adjacent (and much nicer) cosy pub rooms, we were frozen by an icy draft each time a server exited the kitchen, only after... More

Dear family, As a last minute booking, sadly you were not able to have your pick of the tables,I remember you asking to be moved and (being so quiet there being no available tables in the 'cosy pub rooms' requested, i moved you(after an existing booking exited) to a corner table in our 17th century dining room 'extension' (fear not we... This is one of our favourite pubs and is well worth the drive from Carlisle, as there isn't anywhere quite like this close to us. We had the Rib beef Steak for two, excellent as always, there was enough to share with our 5 year old also. Our other sons opted for the confit duck & ground beef burger, both... More

We live locally and, whilst there is a cacophony of pubs from which to choose, few pubs offer authentically, home-cooked food which they care about. Too many have huge menus of freezer or chilled portions and they don't deserve to be in business. The Rat is about as far from this as anywhere I know. It is resisted the temptation... More

We have been visiting this pub over many years. The food is a very good standard and choice of craft beers is good for a small country pub. But the prices are ridiculously high, £12 for a burger and £4 for a beer. A little bit steep considering it's a pub. But the staff are great if a little aloof.... More

Lovely setting, great fish cakes make you wonder how their a la Carte cookery is. Sunday lunch, tasty, hot , great vegetables. Gravy definitely packet, no meat juices or roast flavour at all, roast potatoes also very amateur, roast pork no crackling, really. Anyway still a lovely place with good pub grub. It does what it says on the packet.

Dear James G Thanks for your in the main positive review. I'm not sure what to say about the gravy other than it is most defintiely NOT packet. You are most welcome to come along on a Sunday morning and observe the effort that goes into creating a Sunday roast meal which is all freshly cooked on the day, including the gravy,...
