Although it is only 2-3 miles from Hexham this place is up a narrow winding country lane. it is worth the effort of getting there. On a Friday lunchtime in school termtime, I thought that only one of the 20+ diners would not qualify for a bus pass. We three all enjoyed our meals chosen from the blackboard - 2... More

We were three adults for Sunday lunch but a lot of the meals are for two people so my friend ended up with steak and chips which was not what he really wanted. My husband and I had the chicken for two which at £26 is too expensive as starters and puddings are all extra. The roast potatoes were awful... More

Staying nearby we wanted somewhere to celebrate our wedding anniversary and Valentine's Day. We couldn't have found better in the area! Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. The rib of beef was magnificent. Wine was sensibly priced. The food was locally sourced and was tremendously tasty. We will definitely return when in the area.

We are, I think, the guilty customers responsible for causing Kate M's expectation of the landlady, 'immediately responding to their expectations' adverse review. We do apologise Kate for the landlady necessarily 'briefly' taking time out to explain to us changes made to the menu since we last visited, and undertaking, doing what all good landladies are expected to do, 'being... We had a lunch at the Rat Inn in mid January, and if I say we drove for over three hours to get there, and it was well worth it, you'll get some idea of the quality of the place. Service was friendly and unobtrusive, and the food was excellent. We shared a rack of lamb, which was perfectly cooked,... More

So, it's a freezing, sleety Sunday and you fancy a succulent, gravy smothered, meaty lunch with fresh seasonal vegetables in a cosy pub, with open fire and convivial hosts? Don't choose The Rat. On the aforementioned sleety, freezing Sunday we arrived at The Rat. We had been pleased to see its inclusion in The Telegraph's 50 Best Pubs for Sunday... More

Well. What a thoroughly unpleasant and vitriolic review. If you had taken time to read through my responses you will have noted that I do not reply to every low scoring review. My replies are restricted to those which give an unfair or innacurate recourse of events. So. Thankyou for setting the scene so eloquently. It was wholeheartedly a freezing cold and... More

Once again we enjoyed a delicious lunch on Friday. We both had a steak this time instead of the rib of beef which we love. The steaks did not disappoint. Both were perfectly cooked and so very succulent. The staff are always so friendly and pleasant. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them.Wonderful place.

The high standards of the food is maintained in this busy mid-week lunch. I am never disappointed time. The fishcake starter was a creation and the bacon chop was succulent,

My husband and I love this place ...the staff are always very welcoming and extremely helpful! It was very busy but nothing was too much trouble ...my husband was offered to taste a new wine and (as indecisive as I often am) there was no pressure to order our food. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was superb.... More

Yes it's just a matter of opinion but it is mine that The Rat Inn produces the best food for miles around. We do dine out quite often but I feel like we don't come here often enough, it never disappoints. I love that the ingredients are all sourced from as local as possible and I know personally that the... More
