Visiting Maine for the first time in ages. Wanted tons of seafood. My friend & I wandered in to J's, seemed much like we were on a ship! lol. They had 2 sizes of steamer buckets (forget the poundage) and we were not sure which to get. It was only a few dollars more, so we got the BIG bucket!... More

Love J's and have for years. It never gets old! The oysters are the best/freshest and most reasonable in the entire area. The bar is where to hang where you can sit next to a judge or a lobsterman, but the conversation is always friendly. If you want fried fish or clams don't come here........there is none. BTW J's has... More

Leave your stilettos at the hotel, this is dining in the rough! Excellent quality, off the boat seafood but a tee and jeans place. Perfect to pop in for lunch. Small hole near the docks, will be a wait!

I tend to find J's as the place that Mainers go to have seafood and a beer or two. We did that on this evening and took advantage of a Lobster special and a King Crab Legs special which both came with Steamers and Slaw. The Lobster was spot on, but the Crab Legs were very frozen and dry. I... More

Basic bar, fresh oysters anytime (they do run out on busy Sundays!). The cooked food is so so, but the oysters and steamers are outstanding. Order a bucket of steamers and a cocktail and you're all set.

I was in Portland on business. I was meeting coworkers for dinner. They were from Vermont and Minnesota. The one from Minnesota had never had steamers or whole lobster. I had been to J's before and was also a strong recommendation from a dear friend that lives in Portland. I got there before my friends and sat at the bar.... More

Have eaten here at least four times over the years and enjoyed every meal. Ate dinner at J's two weeks ago and cannot recommend this restaurant. Inattentive waitress who seemed bored. The salad was an embarrassment: a small amount of old, wilted greens with a packet of dressing on the side. The entrees, scallops with lemon and dill over angel... More

Smallish historic charming establishment on the water front. This is a place you will have to wait in a queue to be seated at both bar stools and restaurant tables. The seafood is fresh and easy to eat a lot of. The service and friendliness always amazes me here at such a tourist spot, still the locals enjoy it as... More

We stopped in here with our one year old son for a quick snack. The oysters were terrific and the staff was very accommodating of our little boy.

Inside of j's is small, but cozy! I would recommend going in the summertime and sitting outside. It's got a good view of the oceans and boats! I like the seafood scampi.
