Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Delicious roast beef Sunday lunch. Generous portion and beautifuly cooked. Equally delicious American baked cheesecake for pudding. Cosy, characterful pub. Lovely, friendly staff.

What a nice pub! A lovely old building in beautiful countryside with lots of great walks roundabout, of all lengths. We had eager staff who gave very friendly service and the menu (on Sunday) was great with very tasty 'small plates' as an alternative to...bigger dishes. We had haddock and cheese soufflé, scallops and pâté from the small plates and they were yum, the soufflé especially. Thanks for a treat!More

Five of us came here on the first Saturday in July. The table was ready when we arrived and we decided to have drinks at the table rather than outside as there were rain showers on and off (there are good views over the valley...to the south-west so outside is great on a dry summer evening). The order was taken and the food arrived in a reasonable time. The beer was well kept and there was a good selection of wine. We all enjoyed our food , with the scallop starter particularly good.More

Four of us had a most enjoyable lunch here after a walk in the area. The pub was warm on a very cold day. We ate in the conservatory rather than the cosy bar, it had beautiful views and was warm and tastefully decorated. The...food was tasty, service friendly and helpful, we will definitely visit again.More

We were at the Five Horseshoes for my mums 80th birthday family party. We were a family group of all mixed ages and the staff were wonderful looking after everything we needed. The food was great. A special family day. Would certainly recommend the pub...to anyone.More

Me and my family have visited many a time and this one time would be the best. They consistently show great service and food is always hitting the spot. I would recommend booking as this is a popular destination in the area especially weekends.

Short notice decision based on a recommendation to go and have lunch on a Sunday - 2 vegetarians. We were met by wonderfully helpful service on phoning and had a magnificent meal, in a magnificent location overlooking the fields and lambs and Kestrels circling -...the whole experience was a sensation - gustatory, auditory, visually and emotionally. Recommend it very highly.More

Superb evening once again. The welcome was warm and after a drink in the cosy bar we moved into the restaurant where the view over the valley behind was nothing more than stunning. We chose thé soufflée followed by lamb, accompanied by a Shiraz. The...service was efficient, friendly and everything you would expect from a local pub. Thank you Tracey, Dan and team.More

We've been coming to 5HS for some time and it remains a top spot for a pint and some food after a dog walk or cycle or just for the hell of it. Summer evenings are a perfect time. Tracey and Dan do a great...job and we always feel welcome. Varied in style good pub food and always tasty. Thumbs up as ever.More

Like the title says…This is what you call a proper British pub. Low ceilings and beams, dimly lit with an open fire and a tiny bar…these really are my favourite kind of pubs and they are harder to find these days. I absolutely loved my...visit to the five horseshoes and I’m so glad I chose it as a place to eat. The food was delicious and the desserts were equally amazing and impressive. An extensive choice to say the least. Service was pretty quick and friendly. The views around the pub are also lovely, they have a conservatory restaurant although I was sitting in the bar which I was chuffed about as I secretly wanted to sit in the oldie worldie part of the pub. Highly recommend this pub, don’t go by previous mixed reviews….see for yourself. I absolutely loved it and it was always busy until near the end of food serving times which must be a good thing!More

An unsurpassed view and charming pub interior, but on our latest visit we were disappointed by the lack of fish in a crumble topped fish pie. The bulk of the contents in a modestly sized dish was mashed potato rather than fish, and the further...dollop of mash served alongside was hardly needed. Puddings were much better and reasonably priced; decent wine list also better value than many in these parts. Hope this was just a one-off lapse - still a place of real character.More

I am astounded that you would feel it necessary to go to the trouble of writing a negative public review over the quantity of fish in a fish pie! You are completely factually incorrect as there is absolutely no potato at all in the fish...More

I hadn't been for years and after seeing the Five horseshoes under Alastair Sawday I thought we could go to celebrate my husbands birthday. 3 out of 4 of us asked for the roast with beef and when it turned up, I was really disappointed....All the cabbage, red cabbage, carrots, were soaked in the gravy and the 2 x small pieces of beef, bit mean, were piled ontop with everything else. It was like one giant soup bowl with very watery gravy and not much flavour. I felt the price was far too expensive for a very average roast. I paid £11 + for service which I felt was not worthy of the service provided. On the plus point, the large yorkshire was nice and the view stunning. It was a shame.More

This is a lovely pub with lots of nooks and crannies. The views are to die for with rolling hills etc. Food is very good and served hot and tasty. The service was a little indifferent with some staff more worried about dogs that customers...and stopping kids climbing a fence. Good menu with lots of unusual dishes and not necessarily usual pub fare.More
