We have recently moved to Henley and we were looking for dog walks in the area and this location was recommended. We had popped in for a drink post walk but it was always very busy to get a table last minute so we booked to go one Saturday lunch time,
This is a well run pub with all the staff being on their toes knowing what’s available, timing to collect deliver orders and alert but not intrusive.
The only comment I would make is in this day and age where customers are more aware of food allergies responses to individual requests may be tolerated better.
As a business you can I’ll afford to ignore these requests and being gluten free is pretty normal now a days. This was mentioned when the booking was made but the gentleman. Taking the order( I suspect the owner or at least the manager) did very little to help my friend make an informed decision when choosing her lunch.
This aside it’s a beautiful spot and going back is a certain.

Brilliant anniversary Sunday lunch.
Fantastic views, delicious food and great value for money. The sharing bread platter was fantastic especially the roasted garlic and the roast dinner was the best in Oxfordshire.

I hadn't been for years and after seeing the Five horseshoes under Alastair Sawday I thought we could go to celebrate my husbands birthday.
3 out of 4 of us asked for the roast with beef and when it turned up, I was really disappointed. All the cabbage, red cabbage, carrots, were soaked in the gravy and the 2 x small pieces of beef, bit mean, were piled ontop with everything else. It was like one giant soup bowl with very watery gravy and not much flavour. I felt the price was far too expensive for a very average roast.
I paid £11 + for service which I felt was not worthy of the service provided.
On the plus point, the large yorkshire was nice and the view stunning.
It was a shame.

A few weeks ago I rang and booked a table for six for Sunday 9th May. I was told that I could only reserve a table on the terrace (which had 4 bookable tables) and so I did just in case of bad weather. On arrival we were seated under a portable gazebo and not on the terrace. It was very windy and quite cold so we asked to be seated in the terraced area. We were told that it was fully booked and wouldn't make a difference with regards to the wind. We sat there in coats cold and windswept while CLEARLY the guests on the terrace were able to remove their coats and no wind was blowing around them at all. Considering at the time of booking I was led to believe that I was booking one of the terrace tables.
Most of the food was ok but 3 of us ordered the beef which arrived with large, thick pieces of fat and it was supposed to be medium rare. It was actually very rare. After our meal we were offered dessert menus which stayed with us for at least 20 minutes. Eventually we had to enter the pub and ask for service where three members of staff were standing behind the bar.. We also ordered two flat white coffees which when they arrived were definitely latte's.
I'm guessing the extra portable gazebos have been added to accommodate more guests (which is understandable) but if I was told I had booked one of the 4 terrace tables I would have expected to be seated there. I can honestly say it would have been a much more pleasant and comfortable experience for us.
It was my birthday meal and I was quite disappointed, especially having looked forward to coming for a while and after reading the good reviews online

Awful meal. Served luke warm and then after complaining they brought it back after heating it up in the microwave instead of serving a freshly made up meal. The roast potatoes were tough and tasteless the whole meal looked very unappetising. Menu was far too expensive for such awful food. Never go here again.
Very disappointing

Thoroughly enjoyed our takeaway. Had the steak/ale and chicken/leek pie with veggies, mash and gravy all piping hot and stacked in a car friendly box for transport. Excellent value at £20 for both, and we have left over grave and mash for tomorrow!!! Very efficient service with a big smile. Thank you Dan and Tracey.

Food was ‘okay’ but there was a mixup with the order, the drinks order got los, and the location of the table negatively impacted the overall dining experience.
Also might sound picky but please call out if celery is included in the starter. I would not have chosen the starter had celery been listed with all the other ingredients.
I prefer it when the service is not automatically included on the bill. It just makes it either awkward to ask for it to be removed or feeling disgruntled because you end up paying it when perhaps you don’t want to, it should be the customers choice
The staff were friendly, the pub is gorgeous, in a lovely location with great views and dog friendly, but our overall experience today for the money we paid means we probably won’t return in a hurry -sorry.

Short notice decision based on a recommendation to go and have lunch on a Sunday - 2 vegetarians. We were met by wonderfully helpful service on phoning and had a magnificent meal, in a magnificent location overlooking the fields and lambs and Kestrels circling - the whole experience was a sensation - gustatory, auditory, visually and emotionally. Recommend it very highly.

went for meal with my dad, step mum and my wife and son.
The Traditional ploughmans, pork pie, bread, cheddar, stilton, pickled onion at £12.50 was one slice of bread cut in half (maybe two smaller slices of bread), two small wedges of cheese, quarter pork pie, onion. certainly not worth the price.
The Chicken caesar salad, anchovies, croutons, parmesan would feed a small child.
The Affogato- double espresso with a scoop of ice cream - was certainly not worth £4.
Not worth the cost of the meal.

This is a real gem of a pub. Although we know the Chilterns pretty well, this pub is so tucked away that we had not come across it before. The location is wonderful and will suit walkers and cyclists. Ambience was great with a log fire and friendly staff. We arrived towards the end of service so there were a couple of items no longer available but the quality of the food was very high. We will definitely revisit and highly recommend.

Superb evening once again. The welcome was warm and after a drink in the cosy bar we moved into the restaurant where the view over the valley behind was nothing more than stunning. We chose thé soufflée followed by lamb, accompanied by a Shiraz. The service was efficient, friendly and everything you would expect from a local pub. Thank you Tracey, Dan and team.

We had a lovely Sunday lunch here. I had the beef which was perfectly cooked and the chicken and porchetta looked great too. We sat outside in the garden with a beautiful view over the Chilterns and Thames valley beyond. The service was great too - all very friendly and helpful and clearly working really hard to keep up with all the orders on a busy bank holiday Sunday. Had a nice walk afterwards on the Common just next door.
In summary: highly recommended!

We ordered a roast lunch each. The porchetta was tasty although the crackling was as tough as a dog chew, the beef was chewy. The vegetables were quite nice, although the roast potatoes were not crispy in any way and were bland. £54 for two lunches, a pint, a soda water and two coffees. Expensive and simply not worth it. Avoid. There are lots of places that do it much better, for less.

Disappointing Dining Experience
Location:
The location of this establishment is undeniably lovely, boasting picturesque surroundings that could enhance any dining experience.
Food:
Regrettably, despite the charming ambiance, the roast served was below average and disappointingly tasteless. It lacked the expected flavors and failed to leave a lasting impression.
Service:
Furthermore, the service was notably slow, which further detracted from the overall dining experience. Despite the pleasant setting, the sluggish service detracted from the enjoyment of the meal.
Overall, while the location is delightful, the underwhelming food quality and slow service left much to be desired.

Our absolute favourite pub! The Sunday roast lunch is so delicious, we would recommend the beef (amazingly tender) or the pork porchetta if you want something a bit different. The views over the countryside are amazing (see photo) and the service is great. There are also some lovely walks from the car park that we like to do before lunch.
