Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great pub. Great food. Front of house very attentive and the chef (Paul) also came and checked that everything was OK. Please note that they were intending to close from 24/10/22 until about mid February 2023 so, check their website. A great shame as we...have only just discovered it!More

What a pub/restaurant! A picturesque quintessentially English pub in the lovely village of Hamstead Marshall where there is always a warm welcome from Stella and the team. Great food - good choice across the menu and the Sunday roasts definitely rival The Woodspeen for taste...and are great portion sizes. The decor is lovely in both the pub and the restaurant and the garden is a lovely place to unwind. They also brew some fabulous home made beers. Thoroughly recommended! Support your local pub/restaurant!More

I stayed here a few weeks ago and have been dithering about whether to write an honest review, because the landlady/owner was so friendly and welcoming. But then I reminded myself that these reviews are for the benefit of prospective clients, not the owners, and...I use them to make decisions about bookings so it was right that I should give an honest review. I booked a room for myself and my dog. The room was large but the whole room and bathroom smelt musty and damp. The bathroom had not been cleaned properly and there were hairs on the floor. There were bits of black mould around the base of the shower. The shower was fine and powerful enough. The bed was so hard I had to ask for a second duvet that I could lie on. I know this is subjective but I have never had this problem before. The garden was very unkempt and scruffy and I accept that there had been a summer of drought followed by lots of rain but didn't feel this was a good reason. I should, I know, have said something when I checked in, but the owner was so welcoming I felt too awkward to do so - my fault. Even the hand held card reader was dirty and sticky and this should have confirmed my suspicions right from the start. The breakfast food was good, but spoiled by the dirty table which was very sticky. There were only two other people staying - not the owners fault but it did feel awkward for me in such a massive dining area. The owner opened her gas bill whilst I was having breakfast and said it was £16k and she would have to shut over the winter period. Not something I needed to know and another reason why I did not feel comfortable in complaining. It was obvious that she was running the hotel, kitchen, dining area and bar alone whilst I was there. I had booked for four nights but in the end only stayed for two. I had a family crisis I needed to attend to, but I must say I was glad to leave, even though I wasted a great deal of money which the owner was unable to refund. I'm baffled by the extremely positive reviews which appear here, which are polar opposite to mine, but I write this as I experienced it.More

Fabulous in every way Stayed here on a Saturday night. The room was spacious and comfortable with a very modern bathroom. The pub garden is lovely with Ramsbury ales on draft. We had dinner which was good, but the star was the lovely open fire...in the lounge. Stella, who is the owner is wonderful- friendly and efficient. The breakfast was good too! Highly recommend it.More

Family Sunday lunch for my husband’s 70th. Six adults and four children. First class experience. Wonderful fresh roast beef lunch for most of us, two children had a roast chicken dinner and there was one burger. Lots of vegetables and nice gravy. Puddings were equally...gorgeous. All cooked to perfection- delivered in a reasonable time given they were packed out and short staffed. The lady taking the orders was friendly, helpful and efficient. Good relaxed atmosphere. I’m on a gluten free diet and I was very well catered for. Definitely will return- felt like a real find. No wonder they were so busy. My husband and I will stay there next time we’re down visiting family.More

We stayed here for two nights, with our Yorkiepoo, and we couldn't have had a better time. A warm welcome, nothing was too much trouble, our little pooch couldn't wait to get into the bar, so many treats and cuddles. Breakfast excellent, Eggs Benedict not...to be missed! Evening choices for everybody, generous servings. Our room was very comfortable, although we too had issues with the security code, however probably panic on our part! Made it in the end. Good sitting out areas which we really enjoyed. Stella is a great host, we will return. Recommend by us and 'Cooper' (the pooch.)More

I had originally booked with this hotel via Booking.com for a lovely trip to see Downton Abbey with my mum and sister - we are huge fans and had worked hard to save for this trip. Unfortunately, one of us got Covid before the trip...so I went online to Booking.com to cancel the booking or change the dates, there was 3 hours left to do so on the app so I rang Booking.com customer service and explained the situation. They assured me, because this was a covid matter that I would either get a full refund or be able to change the dates as I was within the allocated cancelation time, however, when they tried to ring the hotel they were not responding after multiple calls. When the hotel was not responding I took matters into my own hands and contacted the hotel on the Booking.com messaging service to speed things up. The hotel responded with rude messages and said that I could not cancel or change my dates ! They did not seem to care that this was a covid situation and there was no chance that we could go - we did move the Downton Abbey dates and I explained that a change in date would be fine once we didn't loose our money. They would not accommodate any of my suggestions and they had no sympathy for the situation. As a small business, I would think that they would like to treat people with some consideration and be a bit nicer in their manner because I was shocked at their treatment !!More

Lovely off the beaten track country Pub with very comfortable rooms. Warm friendly welcome from the landlord Clint. Great beer on tap. All this I gained within 10 minutes of being there. I thought wow!, what a smashing place we chose to stay at. It...got even better when we tasted the awesome food at dinner time ,OMG!, this wasn’t just ordinary food like one expects a pub to serve. This really was exquisite food. I’ve honestly never had a meal this delicious in a pub until now. If you’re anywhere near this place and thinking about eating come here. I promise you’ll not be disappointed . Breakfast too was amazing and all included in the very reasonable price of the room. The Uk is losing great proper pubs like this every day and needs our support or they will disappear for sure! If this one went then it would be a travesty! Clint thanks very much for our stay and delicious food.More

We were warmly welcomed to an almost empty bar (Highclere Prom night) and were disappointed by the reduced menu caused by staff holiday/shortages. Having accepted the situation, we were further disappointed by the food: the pork belly was not crisped, conversely the lasagna was, too...much. Creme brulee much too runny. And do check the price of drinks before you cheerfully accept the offer of a 'summer size' glass. Further disappointment finding the charge of £12.50 for 250ml of rather average Sauvignon Blanc. Won't be returning.More

We booked through booking.com because of the great reviews and reasonable price. We booked two nights but unfortunately stayed two hours. Stella was friendly enough but unfortunately that's where the positives end. Our room overwhelmingly smelt of damp. The window was already open before we...arrived to allow it to air. The window sill was filthy and the window wouldn't close ( not that we would have closed it anyway) Water leak in the bathroom which would have needed attention as right next to the loo. The sight of a suspected pubic hair on the sink wasn't nice.... this makes you wonder if the room had been cleaned/checked before we arrived? We had a drink in the gardens to mull over how to deal with the situation. We had a table booked in the evening but with a very limited menu on a Tuesday evening. We decided that we couldn't sleep there that night the overwhelming smell of damp was to much. We shouldn't have been given the room in the first place. We are not fussy travellers but we do expect at least a basic level of cleanliness no matter how "cheap" the deal.More
