Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have been going to Scarlet Oak for 40 years, since my wife and I had dinner at the previous Whitton House the night we got engaged. We have had many great dinners there over the years. Alex who used to be a waiter then...manager was outstanding. I made reservations on Tuesday for Saturday evening at 5:30. We were not seated in the dining room as expected but in the tavern. It was loud and we got a blast of cold air when the door opened. Our table was against a window next to the entrance to the tavern and people were constantly passing very closely to our table. I had to pull my elbow in while cutting my steak. After dinner I asked to speak with the dining room manager. I told him up front that I was not looking for anything for free but wanted to let him know that the table should not be located where it was for the previously stated reasons. He looked annoyed with me and asked the hostess for a meal voucher. I told him to keep it as it would be a while before we would return. Sadly we will not be returning anytime soon. Please note that the food was ok, not as good as in the pastMore

As indicated in other reviews and the restaurants TripAdvisor rating the SOT is a wonderful restaurant. The ambiance is very New England and allows for a homey and relaxing meal. My wife and I enjoyed a late lunch on Valentine’s Day. As always our food...was delicious. Very fresh, cooked well and lovely presentation Our server was divine. I hope I get her name correct, Raima. She was exceptional. Knowledge of menu, very professional but has a keen wit and sense of humor. The best server I have had in a long time for many restaurant visits (any and all restaurants not just the SOT). Always a good for a meal on the south shoreMore

This was our first visit, but it won't be our last. The service was great. Our server was pleasant and very helpful when questioned about menu items. Our apps arrived promptly and the garlicky shrimp had just the right blend of seasoning without being overwhelming....Our meals were well portioned and nicely presented. My pastrami-spiced salmon was delicious. I usually don't order salmon as I prepare it for myself often, but I'm glad did. The bread pudding and homemade ice cream was a great ending to the meal. No one took home a doggy bag - we all cleaned our plates.More

Waitress was the only good part of the meal. I emailed and never even got a responds. $30 for a lobster quiche. Not homemade and dry and small. nothing else on plate. coffee was dishwater. Crab dip came with inedible crackers. Chicken sandwich had so...much sauce on it person could not eat. Mimosa was all champagne tiny splash of orange juice. Was almost humorous but a very large bill.More

This bar and restaurant is set in back on a main route which looks like an old inn quietly situated behind other businesses. We stumbled upon this local hot spot when traveling through one day and have found why it is so popular. The bar...wraps around the fire brick oven used to cook many of the dishes in the appetizer portion of the menu including the flatbread pizza. If you don’t have reservations it might be hard to find a table or a spot at the bar on weekend nights. This is a popular place many frequent as the service is attentive and the menu provides a little bit for all. The fig flatbread is delicious and steak tips were delectable. If I’m the area even lunch can be packed so be prepared for a wait unless you stop by in between peak times.More

Scarlet Oak is located in an old mansion or Inn and is very popular in the Hingham community. It's very well regarded for good reasons. It has a very fun bar, outdoor scene in good weather, plus kid friendly. Great service. There is a fireplace...in the bar area and the atmosphere is like a well run country Inn. Chef Sherman mixes things up and offers a wide variety of items. Try the Pan Roasted Salmon with his award winning horseradish buttermilk sauce. The Garlicky Shrimp - also tasty. Crab dip really good too. It's just a buzzy fun place where fun people go to have a great meal!More

We love this place; the food is top quality, and the atmosphere is very nice. We like to take out of town guests to eat here for dinner and some wine. It's got a fireplace and a lovely bar.

Good service and quality food. Outside patio is nice when weather allows. Tuna tartare was excellent. Entree choices are good but should include some more local fish options.

Went here for dinner last night. We were greeted by a very friendly front of house staff and seated properly for our reservation. I would recommend a reservation for this restaurant. We sat in a very comfortable booth and we're promptly met by our server...and brought out water and excellent cornbread. My wife was able to enjoy a nice glass of Chardonnay while we waited on the warm goat cheese dip. The dip was okay. The tomatoes made it very watery but the chips that they served with it were excellent. For our main courses we both had a filet. I had the 10 oz my wife at the 6 ounce. She had onion rings and asparagus as her sides. I went with the spinach and the garlicky mashed potatoes. Both steaks were cooked perfection but I was disappointed in the mashed potatoes because they were cold and unappetizing. Overall an excellent meal. The place is very clean. There is lots of parking and it's in a convenient location. The prices are what you would expect for fine dining.More

We gave it a 2nd try and wish we had gone someplace else. The steak tips were chewy and grizzly. The spinach side dish was overly salted. The chicken and avocado sandwich was ok nothing great. The french fries were thin cut and very greasy....The baby back ribs appetizer...a few were warm but the one I got was cold. Maybe they should nuke them longer. The caesar salad was fine. No drink refill when we needed it, it did come eventually. The prices are high and the quality was not.More

The Scarlett Oak Tavern presents itself as a high-end New England restaurant experience, but under delivers. The food was subpar, it was clear that it had been sitting under a heating lamp. Their Kyoto Old Fashioned was little more than Toki mixed with water. The...overall environment is not one of a restaurant worthy of charging those prices. However, our waitress was attentive and sweet.More

We had dinner last night for my friend's birthday, and she had heard positive comments from her friends who had been there. Jen was our waitress and she was very responsive and made suggestions when we asked. I had the tuna tartare which was a...large portion for an appetizer. My friend had the baked Westfield Farms goat cheese appetizer which was also a generous portion and tasted great! I had the $10K tuna which was recommended by Jen, and I loved it. I told my friend that the crispy potato crusted haddock had rave reviews online and she ordered and thought that it was terrific. I asked Jen to bring a dessert with a birthday candle for my friend, which she did. The restaurant has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere and for a Wednesday night, the parking lot was full. We were seated in the bar because we did not have a reservation, and the table was fine. We will come again! Thank you so much for a wonderful meal!More

Tables in the bar area were always first come, first serve as recent as Oct.28 on a previous visit and in the previous 5 years attending the restaurant for an evening dinner. In the previous 5 years, 2 years of which was a drive to...dine, we did so, due to the food and previous staff. Now, and being local patrons, returning there is NOT TO HAPPEN. We were told on arrival, just a week later, these tables were reservation only, and kicked out of a table. Subsequently, another couple, obviously that were aware of the previous policy were also asked to move and put their name in. As I waited and watched the room, with my drink I noticed 2 couples arrive after myself and Michael, a manager that required a name to sit there, CLEARED AND CLEANED a table and sat that couple Another couple, arriving as I stood with my drink, sat at another empty table and then the waitress went to see if they could sit there, she returned and said yes. Upon that yes, I asked them if they had a reservation, they said NO. At that point, between mgmt and staff, and their petty games and flip flop on policy, I left and ate elsewhere that evening. Will not return since other restaurants are equal or above for food and treatment of the public, that supports their establishments for 5 or more years, and especially during the COVID crisis.More
