Really lovely atmosphere and pub however we were asked to do a pre order and when the starters came out, the waitress said they didn't have one of them as it wasn't on the menu even though it was on the one I was given....Then two of the mains weren't available but weren't told till the day. So I don't understand the point of the pre order really.More
Have frequented this restaurant many times. This time everything fell well short of expectations. Meat grisly and undercooked, fat clearly seen in abundance on meat. Yuk. Both fish dishes , looked measly, the fish batter had barely seen the fryer, and was desperately undercooked.
A...poor show all round. Very embarasing as I had guests with me. It was clear there was no leadership front or back of house. Come on guys book up.More
I visited with two old school friends for a catch up over lunch and we ordered two portions of the belly pork and one fish and chips. The fish and chips was fine but came with a small portion of chips which wasn't very filling....Unfortunuately the belly pork was incredibly tough and the skin was very chewy and had clearly been blow torched to give it some colour. The dish cost £16 and for what is a relatively cheap and fatty cut of pork, the usual expectation is that it should be very tender and moist and with crackling.
The seasonal veg served with the belly pork was very disappointing. Generally the veg was undercooked but in particular the Brussels sprouts were like bullets and were raw to the point of being inedible.
A really disappointing experience overall as previously we have enjoyed great food here which is why we came back with old friends to show off a local pub.
At no point were we asked how our meals were so didn't have the opportunity to flag up these issues and frankly would have felt awkward bringing it up myself in front of old friends without being asked first by staff members.
Overall such a shame and a genuine let down so won't be rushing back as frankly there are better pubs nearby.More
Eleven of us out to Christmas lunch , all feeling festive and looking forward to a wonderful festive meal . Unfortunately that’s where the festivities ended .
Atmosphere in the restaurant was pretty non existent , Turkey was OK but luke warm , roast potatoes...were nice , however veg was meagre and undercooked , sprouts were rock hard and inedible , plates were not hot .
Five of us were to have creme brûlée for sweet , the dishes were so overcooked they resembled scrambled egg , all were returned .
All in all a pretty disappointing lunch , after a complaint the Manageress gave us a discount off of the bill but it didn’t make up for a lousy Christmas lunch experience .
Very disappointing , won’t be rushing to return any time soon .More
We visited for an Xmas dinner with the family after having such a fantastic meal here last year. The staff as always were fantastic and made sure we were looked after, but we did have to get attention to order… we were told that they...were trying to stagger the kitchen but it was not busy so a little confused what was being staggered…
The food itself was average, not to the standard of last year’s meal. The roast potatoes were hard and the lamb shank was in a flavourless jus… the potato cake starter was very plain. nothing was offensive about the meal but just wasn’t to the standard we are used to with the restaurant.
I appreciate that COVID has affected all places but was surprised how much the standard of food had slipped.
I will visit again, hopefully to find the food better after Xmas… but for now it was just disappointing.

We booked a Christmas party for 15 people and from the moment we walked in the service was impeccable and the bar area very welcoming. Everyone commented on the efficiency and friendliness of the staff. Also to provide such an excellent standard of food for...so many people was another brilliant achievement and was greatly appreciated by all of our party. It's definitely a 10 out of 10 from all of us for the service, food and ambience.More
We took some friends there for lunch yesterday and I have to say that we were extremely disappointed. The lamb, which three of us ordered, was tough and sinewy. When asked, I told the waitress who said she'd feed my comments back to the kitchen....Maybe she forgot or maybe the management just didn't care but nothing came of it. We were also subjected to music with a loud beat, suitable for shops to encourage people to buy things, but not really for dining. We've eaten at the Puffing Billy several times over the years and thought the place would be a safe bet to take our guests. With regret we won't make that mistake again.More
This place was a really good find. Very attentive and professional service. Good hearty food and lovely atmosphere with 2 roaring log fires. We were particularly impressed with the warm welcome we received and staff went above and beyond! Had the Christmas menu -2 courses...for £24.99. Yes we would recommend and yes we would definitely return. Well Done Puffing Billy you are setting a great example for hospitality establishment!More
