It's obvious that the New Year's Eve closing is affecting the food. The chicken last night was, basically, inedible. The only reason for the 3-star rating is because the appetizers were quite tasty, and the steelhead trout was well prepared. But, the chicken was awful!

Always ahead of the restaurant scene, Lenny Russo's Heartland Restaurant brought the locavore fresh ingredient menu to the Twin Cities area well ahead of its time. Great food. Great atmosphere. Closing on December 31, 2016. Make one last visit if you can. You will not be disappointed.

Everything about our dinners was lovely ... beautifully prepared, presented and served. We were celebrating and the experience fit the bill perfectly. Sadly they are closing at the end of the year.

Three of us came for dinner on Sat. nght. We had reservations, and this is a must for the place. Host sat us, and our waitress soon appeared to explan the menu. We shared some dishes-- , a grain and veggie salad and a pumkin soup. Both of these were very tasty, and would recmmend. One of my friends had... More

Soon as we heard that Heartland's last evening will be 31 December, we cleared our schedules to make sure that we got there. It's something of a sad moment -- though owner LR will go on to do something interesting. Early dinner 5.30 on Saturday night: people arriving at the door and hoping for an open table were disappointed --... More

Owner Lenny Russo never ceases to amaze. Great appetizers and burgers in the bar area, particularly before a St. Paul Saints game at CHS Field that is right across the street. The main restaurant is still the best in St. Paul. Farm fresh ingredients and locally sourced beef, chicken, pork, and bison. Menu\ changes regularly. Anything bison, including the tartare... More

We went to Heartland with high expectations and were really disappointed with our experience. The food just wasn't good. We didn't enjoy the amuse bouche. The bread was just ok. The pork rilette was so average it just shouldn't be on the menu. The pepper-tomato chilled soup actually tasted bad. And the lake trout with pea-corn relish was horrible. A... More

This has been a great place to eat since its early days on St Claire Ave in St Paul. The downtown location is classy and the food and service are excellent.

Two couples met for a Saturday night dinner at a highly rated downtown St Paul restaurant and the four of us had very mixed feelings as we left. The building is beautiful. The service was very good. The restaurant was largely empty. We all really wanted to like the Heartland but we were largely unable to do so. As we... More

A family celebration, relatives who came from afar, an acclaimed restaurant, what could be better, right? Wrong, unfortunately. My meal ranged from bland to unappealing. Imagine a gloppy beet vinaigrette coating a heap of salad greens whose color and flavor disappeared under all that magenta. Next, bland greyish millet with steelhead--no spark. And only 2 positive comments from an entire... More
