A trip back to a previous local to meet a friend for lunch - the William was a walk away from a previous house so this was a good opportunity to see how things were. Not a good as I would have liked - found...thta there is a change of management - and ownership - coming up and the atmosphere was a bit low. Butcombe beer was OK. The fish and chips we both ordered came with very good chips but both of the battered fish were overdone almost to the point of being burnt. Fish inside was OK. Hopefully next time I go the new management will have improved things.More

Had lunch in the Royal William after a walk. Friendly staff, good well kept draught beer and good food at a fair price. The pie of the day was particularly good! Will certainly be going back.

Really disappointing food.Ordered breaded mushrooms to then be to!d"sorry there are not enough left" to which the waitress removed them from the specials board..Ordered falafels, well I am sure they were not meant to the served black.returned to waitress by my partner who told her...he cou!dn't bite them to which she replied "oh really".well we could only just about cut them with a knife and therefore then have to retrieve them from the table back to the p!ate. Next lot were served and were orange/brown,strongly proving the first lot were burnt. The special burgers were delivered, chips very over cooked and again hard to cut, chicken breast was burnt but the sauce covered that up. No point in complaining again if the waitress and chef do not recognise burnt food. Waste of money, expensive and next time the wonderful Edgemore Inn is closed,we won't turn right,we will go home. Possibly the worst food I’ve ever tasted and staff (one barmaid in particular) are extremely rude.

Breaded mushrooms were like bullets. Inside the mushrooms were watery and the garlic dip was absent of garlic. The beef pie was large most of the size was taken up with a flakey crust. Food was hot but tasteless. Homemade Mushroom risotto was not seasoned...and mushrooms that were used did not give the meal the lift (taste) it required. An honest review especially when you are paying £50+ pounds. Not many people in when we ate so no excuse of pressure just lack of care and passion of what the pub us delivering to the customer. At the end of the day these issues boil down to the management/ owners. Just lost two customers.More

We came for a pleasant lunch and a catch-up. The food was nice but the waitress was sooo rude, we couldn't believe it, never had one like her! She clearly had no time for being polite to her customers, no wonder there were only 6...of them. We were turfed off our first table as it was, apparently, reserved, but no-one came to use it or the other 'reserved' table. I'm not surprised. Go somewhere else unless you like being scowled and tutted at.More

Sunday Carvery. Booking essential they said. Turned up at the appointed time. Only the end scraps left. "Because we've had so many walk-ins today" they said. Walk out was our decision.

Arrived at the Royal William last night after a few hours of walking, hungry and looking forward to a good solid meal. We were told on arrival that food was only being served for another 15 minutes as the kitchen would be closing, so we...ordered straight away. I'd told my friend in advance, as I'm a regular customer there albeit usually just for coffee on Saturdays when I'm walking in the area, that the 'Gourmet Burgers' sounded great. We both ordered the chicken burger. Our orders arrived very quickly. "Buttermilk chicken fillet, sultan of swing salad & salsa" We immediately knew just by looking at the food that it was very poor. There was no salad on the plate (so I've no idea what sultan of swing is supposed to be). The burger was thin, overcooked (hard, lukewarm and overfried) and completely tasteless. We started eating as we were very hungry after 3 hours walking. Chips were fine but again lukewarm. If we wanted just chips we could've paid far less. Nobody came to ask if our meal was OK. My friend left half of her burger, and i just ate the "chicken", as it was so unpleasant in the bun. As I've said it was barely warm, hard, overfried tasteless and incredibly poor. I haven't had such a bad meal in a pub for as long as I can remember. And usually after a long walk, it's not difficult to feel satisfied. When the lady came to take our plates away I told her that the food had been awful and why. She said "oh sorry about that" and we heard nothing more. It was clearly a matter of end of the day and nobody cared what was served. Very very poor experience and far from what I expect to be served for a £12.95 "gourmet burger". We said to each other a macdonalds would have been far tastier and satisfying. The above was what I emailed to the pub as feedback, and the response I received was about as genuine and concerned as the waitress had been last night. The 1 star is for the chips. Everything else zero. Will never go here for coffee again, let alone "food"More

Really disappointing. Shame as it’s a lovely pub in a good location for a walk up the beacon. Food was not good, it was expensive, they got the order wrong and they sent out burnt food that had to be returned meaning we all ate...at different times. Person who I think was in charge was very unwelcoming, abrupt even before the issues, let alone the faces she pulled when I had to return food. Felt sorry for some of the staff. I won’t be returning.More

I've only ever stopped off for a pint once or twice over the years and found the pub perfectly acceptable. My mum however wanted to take me there for a family birthday treat and so I duly turned up knowing roughly what it would be...like. The food was perfectly fine - nothing overly fussy, good portions and the price point is about right for what you are getting. Drinks order was done promptly and no complains there either. The younger waitress was very accommodating and did a great job with a smile - she even took a photo for us, which was kind of her. The older lady looked grumpy and like it was a chore us being there (on a Tuesday evening, with only one other booking - I expect that given the day of the week, so fine). What I don't expect is someone looking like they can't be bothered to serving paying customers - either you do it willingly or find something else where you don't have to be pleasant to people. Simple choice really. In summary, food acceptable; younger waitress delightful; older waitress/manageress a bit grumpy. Would I return? Not for dinner inside - perhaps a pie and a pint in the summer but, since I live locally, I would prefer not to be in a beer garden on the side of a busy road and would probably head to one of my other haunts to enjoy the views in the Painswick and Slad valleys.More

An unexpectedly quiet Friday working from home meant we had time to nip out for a quick pub lunch. We’d been before and had an excellent baguette with a small side of chips. I know costs have risen, and I wouldn’t have minded the £50+...for four lunches if the service had been welcoming and the food had been better. Baguettes are now just a soft roll, very limited choice, just cheese, not served with anything- onion, pickle, tomato or even butter - just very boring grated cheese most of which falls out. Chips are now extra - Won’t bother again - such a shame, it wouldn’t take much to be so much better.More

Met here for lunch with friends before a walk. It was a very disappointing meal all round. My friend's fish and chips was so overcooked, burnt on the outside and dried up inside. He had to pick off all the batter and said it was...the worst fish he'd ever eaten. My gammon was tough and overcooked. The fried egg was set not runny. Others had jacket potatoes which were very small and had hardly any toppings on. My husband had faggots which were OK but nothing to write home about. The young waitress who took our order for drinks and food was polite & lovely but the older lady who brought the food out and took our money was SULLEN and RUDE. No one came to ask us if the food was OK after it had been brought out. We guessed they knew it was poor. When our plates were collected my friend commented about the fish being overcooked the older lady said "Oh." No apology then!? She could see that he'd left all the burnt batter on his plate, uneaten. He was then served with a black coffee with milk. He hadn't ordered this as he'd asked for an americano with hot milk. This was a punishment (we assumed) for having the nerve to say very politely that the fish wasn't great. To cap it off the ladies toilets were terrible. I've never seen a broken loo seat held together with gaffer tape before. Hopefully never again. We certainly won't return. We don't recommend this place and will tell everyone to avoid it.More

Three of us had booked a table in advance, yet when we arrived there was no record of our booking - cue eye-rolls and tutting from the lady at the bar. Our lovely young waiter took us to a table, and gave us the menu...- all with a friendly smile. The lady took our orders and brought our drinks, each time with a look of pained forebearance. The food was lovely - fish & chips, and minted lamb casserole, but her attitude, unfriendliness and almost rudeness, means we won't be back. Which is a shame, as we were looking forward to eating in a non-chain restaurant.More
