Ananta is housed in the picturesque Coach and Horses pub, in the quiet village of Wicken Bonhunt, near Saffron Walden, Essex. Delicious Authentic Thai Food well worth a visit

We have eaten here on many occasions and we have never been disappointed. The food has alway been authentic and delicious. All of the meals are prepared fresh and that takes a little longer to do especially when the kitchen is very busy but I can assure you the wait is well worth it. Sergio who owns the restaurant runs the front of house and he is very friendly and always wanting to please you. We ate outside last night due to Covid-19. Hand sanitiser is available on all tables and the staff were seen using it and face masks every time they delivered meals and took away the plates. They are obviously very keen to ensure the safety of their clients and staff which made us feel very safe. They also have a good selection of Gins and beers.....

We hadn’t eaten out since before the first lockdown in March so we really needed a change of scenery to celebrate a birthday meal and it wasn’t a difficult decision in choosing Ananta, our favourite local restaurant. And what a great choice it was. The welcome is always warm and friendly - Sergio is wonderful and genuine front of house host and Ananta cooks and presents delicious food ...a great combination. The only difficult decision is choosing whether to go for their Thai or Tapas menu days! A beautiful old pub in a quiet, rural village with great hosts and delicious food ...what more could you ask for?

Takeaway Thai

We were visiting friends in the village who arranged the takeaway and I cannot compliment the food enough! The Spring Rolls were fresh, home made and very tasty. The fish cakes and satay were ok too. We shared Pad Thai and a Green Curry - both very tasty and as good as we’ve eaten in Thailand - our friend’s dish of Penang Curry stoke the show I could easily have licked the dish clean. We will be back - Thank you Sergio!

VERY disappointing and Expensive meal

Warm cider (no ice offered), no choice of gin and flat tonic, special sharing starter was good but overpriced, red curry was way too salty and Pad Thai was boring… worst of all drinks took 20mins to arrive, prawn crackers took 40mins to arrive and the starter took over an hour to get to us despite the fact that we had preordered the day before. Low quality main meal took and hour and a half - also that little lot was over £40 each!! we won’t be going back!! Which is a shame because the people were very nice… They tried but failed.

I am so sorry to read your review. I was not aware of all these issues (apart from the delay in your starters) that day that you came to the restaurant. Please accept my apologies because we do have a gin menu with many different choices but I assumed you didn't mind the gin when you ordered a gin and tonic without specifying the brand, so I gave you a Bombay Sapphire. Also for the cider, we serve it normally very cold but your partner ordered one that we normally don't sale so it came from a different fridge, also this could have been sorted if you let us know so we can give you some ice. The special selection of starters are home made in our restaurant, and they require a lot of preparation and time to cook, also with the increase in the cost of labour, electricity and gas we had no choice but to increase the price around £2 per person. I am glad to read that you enjoyed them apart from the cost. About the mains, with the red curry we could have taken it back to the kitchen to add more coconut meal, when the curry is ordered hot sometimes it can be a bit more salty as we put more curry paste into it. The pad thai is a traditional dish from Thailand and we serve it exactly at it is, we don't do anything to make it more exciting, it would have been better to order from our special menu where we have fusion dishes that are more interesting and exciting to eat. Please accept my apologies for our failing in serving you with your expectations, please another time let the manager know about those issues that can be easily fixed and I hope you find around other restaurant that is more suitable to you. Delicious food and friendly staff!

Delicious food and friendly staff - we visited Ananta for the first time tonight for my husbands birthday and had a wonderful meal. We placed our order over email beforehand which made everything more efficient. We had duck spring rolls with pad Thai and massaman beef curry, all really flavoursome and good portions. We have eaten at many Thai restaurants around the world and Ananta did not disappoint. Thank you Sergio and team!

Ananta was a horrible experience from the start. We were seated and rushed through an ordering process and waited 1.5 hours for our food to be brought to us while guests who had entered after us had already been served multiple times. One of the guests who had been served their starter had offered to give us food as they noticed how long we had been waiting for. The food was not very flavourful, the vegetables look out of date and they were undercooked. The excuses from the waiter had become too much. The food tasted like leftovers from a week before. After paying the bill of £44 hard-earned Great British Pounds, I have decided I won't be going back. I wouldn't go to this restaurant if you're not easily pleased. Or if you have developed taste buds.

Poorly packaged food and mean portions

We ordered food to collect from the van. The takeawy packaging was inadequate. The food was cold by the time we got it home and the curries had soaked through the packaging and leaked into the bag. Very disappointing. And most annoyingly, very easily solved by using the right packaging .Food was average, portion sizes here definitely on the mean size -- ie 6 pieces of chicken in the green curry. All in all, an experience all to true to lockdown life. Won't be using again. I have eatned in the restaurant before and had muhc more positive experiences so maybe this is an unfortunate anomaly ....

Hi Lee, I am so sorry to read that you had issues with your collection from our van but I am happy to receive this feedback because I wasn't aware of this until now. We changed the packaging last summer to avoid the use of plastic and it did work well during the summer period when people was eating in our premisses from the food van. We are going to change immediately the packaging for the curries to prevent this to happen again. In relation with the amount of chicken in the curry, you should have had more pieces. Favourite restaurant in the area, great atmosphere and large choice of drinks and the food is made from scratch and from the heart! The staff do everything to ensure you have a fantastic visit and even our young nieces and nephew are not problems to feed either. Great experience and even though we will be moving from the area, we will still travel to visit and eat here. Would recommend.

Best Thai food ever!

We have been going to Ananta for a few years now, as much as we can. It’s a 30 minute drive but we still go there to get take aways as their food is absolutely amazing! I have used some older photos as they are only open for take away at the moment. Nothing is too much trouble for Sergio & Ananta, the pub is so cosy & I can’t wait for it to be open again. If you love Thai food, don’t wait any longer to book in for a takeaway! We have been to Thailand a few times but Ananta is still some of the best Thai food we have tasted!

Fantastic meal in a lovely setting

Absolutely delicious food in a lovely setting, run by a friendly and attentive team. The lamb shank massaman curry was absolutely delicious but the highlight for me was the scallop ceviche which was light, zingy and beautifully balanced. There was a really good wine list as well. I can't recommend this place enough, we will definitely be planning a return visit as soon as possible.

Well what can I say. My previous profession has been in the kitchens for many years, I absolutely love Thai cuisine. I have had many Thai food experiences, but must I say I have not had a selection of dishes with an abundance of flavour like you get here. The front of house service was second to none. All of the produce is of a high quality front and back of house. Me and my partner came away feeling extremely satisfied with absolutely everything. If you love thai then this is the place to come. No better thai restaurant than this within 100 miles of here. Highly recommended. Will one hundred percent be revisting.

An Enjoyable Visit

Set in the middle of a beautiful small village this lovely traditional pub now serving only Thia food. The pub has three separate eating areas inside and tables and benches outiside to the front. The staff were very attentive and friendly. Their menu is interesting with specials on the board with reasonable pricing.

Great food and hospital hosts. We will be back

We visited as a family group of 7 including 2 young kids, and the staff were really helpful. The Thai food was probably the best since being in Thailand. Also they had a wider selection of vegetarian mains than most, which is great. The hosts Ananta and Sergio were very hospitable and friendly ( as were the locals in the pub) , we had a chat long after. Even though we live 20 miles away, we will be back. 😃

I have eaten here a few times but never got round to leaving a review. After last nights meal however I thought it about time. The food was absolutely delicious and one of the nicest meals we have had in a long time. All the staff are lovely and we felt totally safe with the Covid measures put in place. Strongly recommend. They do takeaway food also

Wow what a superb place this is for authentic fresh home cooked Thai food. This was prob one of the best Thai meals I have had in a long time. Just absolutely delicious and not overpriced. Sergio greeted us with a very friendly warm welcome, and he and his staff were truly lovely and attentive the whole evening we were there. Nothing is too much trouble and the pub has so much character it made for a really wonderful evening. Will defo be coming back. Thank you Sergio and your team. :-)
