So long since I had visited the White Hart I was a little uncertain about what our lunch date with friends would bring. A friendly welcome at the bar quickly set any qualms aside. Our table in the restaurant was plenty large enough for four...and we were given plenty of time to review the menu. There was a good value set menu (from which we could, we were quickly told, depart if we wished). For the two vegetarians there was one dish on the set menu, and a pasta and two burgers (one of them vegan) to choose from the a la carte. Keen to leave room for dessert, we opted straight away to begin with a main course (two macaroni cheeses, one fish and chips (hake?), and Cumberland sausages. Avoiding a starter meant a longer wait for the mains, but all of us agreed the wait was worth it. Desserts were also very good for the three of us who had the capacity, although the bread and butter pudding was not quite as expected (possibly using brioche rather than the traditional white bread. Surprisingly the only draught beer was the ubiquitous Doom Bar. Perhaps the management might consider one of the many good Essex beers and slash the food miles? That apart, a delicious and satisfying lunch, a welcoming atmosphere and friendly, attentive, service. Entrance to the car park is steep - wouldn't like to attempt it in my Ferrari (if I had one).More
