Allways a warm welcome excellent service and food. This is a proper country pub. Our well behaved dog is always made welcome. A real bonus as so many beautiful walks in the area.

First time here, tried the Sunday roast. Cooked nice but very bland no flavour and burnt potatoes. Gravy like water. Only some staff were friendly others were rude. Very small in there. Over priced at £19.95 for a ham roast and £4 for 3 small...florets of cauliflower cheese. Wouldn’t rush back at all.More

Booked for dinner at 7:30, it would appear as did all other tables at the very small and dated restaurant in the rear lean to area. Very rude waitress, no manners at all, very brisk air - each table is catered to by one chef...for the whole eatery and each table served one at a time - so if you choose a starter then a main, the rest of the room wait whilst you ear your starters, then your mains before the chef will move onto the next table to repeat this. Therefore, the waiting time is very long and frustrating...whilst trying not to watch each table in turn complete their meal before you receive a thought. Staff defensive of the way this is run .... surely all starters to come out to tables, then mains....all paying guests would happily wait in turn for this method. Understaffed, over booked and terrible method of delivering each table in its completeness starter, then mains before moving on......More

This pub was just lovely. I'd called and booked a table, and when we arrived were seated in the restaurant. This is a traditional old fashioned pub and there are not many of those left. Service was fantastic, all the the staff were friendly and...attentive. Menu had plenty of dishes to choose from, along with the 'specials' board. Food came out piping hot and presented beautifully. Everyone really enjoyed their meal and the Donkey fries are a must! We will certainly be returning.More

Sadly after being a regular customer, I have just had my final visit to the Donkey. Previously, staff have been friendly, food has been fresh and enjoyable, but sadly not today. Conservatory and bar full of flies and nothing being done about it. The staff...were rude, I asked to order our lunch and I was told "I will just do this first" (admin), then while ordering the phone rang half way through, the lady left me at the table and shouted "hang on, I'll just get that" as she walked away, as she returned, no apology. Food arrived... stale, salty and poor. Really disappointed.More

We have occasional lunches with our daughter-in-law's parents to keep in touch, and take it in turns to drive and chose the venue. On this occasion, it was "their turn", and we had been told the venue (a fish restaurant) a couple of weeks beforehand....However, when they collected us, they said they had a confession to make - the fish restaurant had been closed for a while, so they had selected another place - The Donkey, which we hadn't been to for many years. We hoped for the best, as we recently revisited another old haunt (the Water Witch at Odiham) with other friends, which was a truly awful experience. Thankfully, we needn't have been worried. It's a lovely old pub with the attraction of the donkeys too, and we were offered a table in the conservatory. However, there isn't any air-con (just fans) so they were happy for us to sit in the very pleasant and cool interior. Jason, behind the bar, deserves special mention, as he was happy to pour me a "taster" of the ales, was very knowledgeable about the beers and was so enthusiastic and attentive throughout our visit that I assumed he must be the landlord to show that level of service - but no, just a genuinely great barman. Coincidentally, it was "fish Wednesday", and there was an extensive list of fish specials to consider alongside the usual menu - we all ate from the fish menu, and all dishes were excellent (along with the starters and puddings). An unpretentious and not-too-pricey wine list added to the experience, and the final bill, incl. tip, came in at just shy of £50/head, which we considered to be good value for money considering everything that we had and the overall pleasant tie - we won't leave it so long before returning.More

We stopped at this pub for lunch after a walk around Waverley Abbey and Tilford. We received a friendly welcome and good service. They do add a 10% service charge to the bill, but we didn't mind this and would have left a tip anyway....We ordered the chicken burgers, which each contained two generous pieces of Southern fried chicken fillets. We chose the donkey fries option to go with them, and I have to say these were absolutely amazing. Saute potatoes cooked with garlic and herbs, and it was a very generous portion too. After we'd eaten, we went outside to say hello to the two resident donkeys that we'd spotted on our way in, but unfortunately they were not out, probably having an afternoon nap in their shelter. We had to make do with looking at pictures of them on the pub website.More

Great family feel plus Donkeys! The food and service was great (Donkeys are only around on the nice days.

Sunday lunch is this lovely off the beaten track country pub. Tucked away down a step slip road with a garden terrace and donkey paddock. Excellent roasts plus a few specials (mostly fish). Slightly higher prices than average but the food is well above average....Plentiful and perfectly cooked veg. Good service in a slightly cramped dining area. Best pub lunch in a long while, we'll definitely be back.More

Our family of six across three generations thoroughly enjoyed an outstanding Sunday lunch today. The food standard is superb and the portions generous with service by extremely friendly staff who really want their customers to enjoy the experience. There is also a comprehensive menu and...specials always available. Everyone left feeling happy and contented so we can highly recommend The Donkey to anyone that appreciates good food in a charming country setting.More

My partner and I are away for a weekend and we found this hidden gem online and we are so pleased that we found it! We had the best evening and the best food we’ve had in such a long time. All the food was...freshly made and came out swiftly piping hot and full of flavour. The pub is a lovely family run business with staff who are more than happy to stop and talk. They went above and beyond, we were so pleased to have found it! I can’t recommend The Donkey enough! It even has two lovely donkeys that you can pet - it was so nice to find somewhere which wasn’t a boring chain and it is completely independent. Thank you to you all for such a lovely evening!More

What a great hidden find, my other half and I have been here for dinner numerous times last year! (we haven't found the time to go there this year yet - crazy I know!) We generally go on a Tuesday evening - for the £10...mains deal (very much worth it) and it is always a great visit. The Lasagne in particular is outstanding!!! Generally such tasty home-cooked dishes! Lee the owner/Chef is such a lovely guy - Helen is so warm and friendly too, such a family feel welcome when we always return! Can't wait to go and see them again soon. And the gorgeous doggy! The bar area is cosy and cute too. So lovely in the winter months too, the fire on - very nice! Can't recommend this place more! Plus there are gorgeous donkeys outside the pub, ha! (Love a donkey!) Why wouldn't you visit! 5 stars every time!More

We went there yesterday for Sunday lunch and all ordered the roast. At £19, it was probably at the top end of what I would pay for a roast but thought that was fine if done really well. The food quality was good; beef was...cooked pink and the veg was all nicely presented and cooked well. However, the portions were very small - 2 very thin slices of meat, just two pieces of potato each and two bowls of veg for five with very little in each bowl. Real shame, as it could have been somewhere I would have wanted to go back to, had we received decent sized portions, but was still hungry when I left.More

We would highly recommend a meal at the Donkey. Excellent food, friendly accommodating staff, small venue, cosy and relaxed. The quality of the food- both main courses and puddings were delicious. The potatoes- donkey fries or otherwise were the best. It was well priced -...particularly compared to other venues locally where the food doesn’t come a close second albeit that they cost considerably more. Try it - I truly believe you won’t be disappointed.More

I had visited the donkey for the first time for a meal with my partners family, for a birthday. The food was exceptional, and we didn’t have to wait long for it to arrive, the donkeys obviously were very sweet but I had been most...impressed with every single member of staff on shift, everyone had been very polite and courteous and from an outside perspective they seemed like a caring team towards each other aswell! One lady in particular, (unfortunately I didn’t get her name) had been very sweet with my 18 month old daughter and had been helpful with keeping her entertained. Would defiantly recommend & will defiantly be coming back! Thank you!More
