Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

In all honestly, after reading the recent reviews, I didn’t really know what to expect… I was surprised to walk into a full, welcoming, and recently refurbished restaurant/pub. It was immaculate, cozy and very inviting… not at all what I had expected, given the negativity...on here! It was a Friday night and we were offered a set menu or the standard menu by an attentive waitress who promptly took our drinks orders. We opted for the set menu which was simple but offered great value for money with 2 courses at £20 or 3 for £24. There would have been no issue if our group had wanted to mix and match between menus. To start I chose crispy whitebait which came with garlic aioli - the portion size was generous, a hearty and delicious start to the meal. Main course was breaded chicken served on crushed new potatoes with garlic and watercress. Again a really generous portion, the chicken was excellent. I regret not ordering a side of buttered greens to accompany… next time! The meal was completed with a lemon posset with raspberry sorbet and meringue. This was perfectly sharp and refreshing. Service - both attentive and discrete- I was even offered more cushions as I was uncomfortable and pregnant. This was a lovely gesture! Don’t be fooled by the negativity online, this is exactly what the Zetland needed. I understand people loved how it used to be, good pub grub, but in my opinion it had really gone down in the last few years and needed a complete revamp. I look forward to coming back and trying some of the other items - the fish stew looked amazing! Well done!More

Really delicious food and lovely setting. We had the three course set menu. Good choice for vegetarians and meat eaters. Good value too!

When travelling down from London, the Zetland Arms has been a firm favourite for the past 10 years. We were looking forward to our visit following the refurbishment and sampling the new menu. We sat in the restaurant, and we all felt there was a...lack of choice on the menu for both food and wine. Service in the restaurant was slow, we waited an hour for our first course. When it did arrive, the mussells were cold, and some shells were smaller than my fingernails! There was no obvious front of house, and the atmosphere was dull. From my observations, I think the focus is on the pub menu, which is served outside. Sadly, we have made the decision not to return. This is not the same place it used to be!More

The Zetland Arms has always been one of our 'go to' places. Loved the food and vibe, but unfortunately this place has changed and not for the better! The food was awful. My sister and I had the mussels which were served cold in a...tastless gloopy leek sauce. My husband has the chicken which was overcooked and dry. My brother in law had the fish and chips which was tiny, and probably the most disappointing as this used to be massive! No specials board and the menu definitely lacking choice. We really wanted to enjoy the food but honestly, it was just not nice at all. The wine - French Sauvignon, what is that about..? It has to be Marlborough. The atmosphere - dead. The sun was out, so it should have been heaving but maybe people are spending their hard warned cash elsewhere. As I say, we have loved this place for many years, but will not return. Honestly, spend your money elsewhere.More

First visit since pub has changed hands.Pleased to see new decor outside and in . Immediately welcomed by Bar Staff who explained that our pre booked table still had lingering diners, (busy Sunday Lunchtime). We didn't have to wait too long and we're kept informed...until we were seated. It was a Sunday lunch menu and the food and service were excellent. Overall great experience and will definitely return.More

We booked for lunch and thought the two staff members that served us were lovely and attentive. Two of us shared the crab rarebit and the mussels. There were plenty of mussels and they a were a good size and very tasty. The place was...quite busy and there was a nice atmosphere with a lovely log fire on a wet and windy day.More

Contrary to the many negative reviews this newly changed hands pub has received, we really enjoyed our lunch there today. Pub is situated in a great position adjacent to the beach and on a very stormy day we received a warm welcome. We were immediately...shown to our table even though we were slightly earlier than our reservation and the waiting and bar staff were all friendly and attentive. Good atmosphere given it was a February Monday lunchtime. The menu choice is not extensive but we all enjoyed what we chose and the chips were excellent and certainly not frozen or disappointing. The portion sizes are not large, but suited us perfectly as this really is a matter of personal preference. Slight criticism that a little delay between starters and mains, but not unacceptable. My advice is to ignore the negative reviews and try it out for yourselves.More

Awful. Table given to another party had to move people at other tables. I had a broken rib, had requested table and was left standing waiting for 15 mins. Food took nearly an hour and staff look visibly stressed. Do not go.

Very unimpressive. We had this pub on our bucket list and decided to try it today. We ordered 2 coffees and an orange juice but the coffees were served up in paper cups even thought we weren't takeaway customers. We found the lunch menu were...refused a table as there were none ( we didn't book in advance to be fair). So we asked if we could have a bar snack at the bar and were told that was fine. While we were sitting at the bar we were asked to move by the landlord as he had a group of 'friends' to accommodate. We, were more than happy to leave at that point and will not be returning in future. We're not the kind of people who accept poor service or rudeness readily and hate spending our hard-earned money in places that do not appreciate us as paying customers.More

A favourite haunt for many many years gone to the dogs.. No atmosphere and staff needs management. Food was meant to be a 8 oz rump (ahem) I certainly don't mind paying prices for quality but disappointed. A few frozen chips and watercress. No salad,...no peas, no mushrooms. Peppercorn sauce was bland. Staff stood in corner gossiping and the only people working was kitchen and person behind the bar. If nothing to do waiting staff should be checking their stations and cleaning. Stools at bar was not even put back and table had mess left on while they all continued to gossip. Meet and greet if nothing to do girls as 10% a lot for service in bill. Sorry Zetland but get your menu together and your staff before you lose any more customers. French mustard was delicious. Disappointed all roundMore

Had always loved this pub with its delicious food and warm and friendly atmosphere - every visit felt like a treat. However hadn't realised it had changed hands and today's visit was so different and really disappointing. Food portions very small for the price point,...quality of ingredients questionable, dry tasteless frozen skinny chips. The 2 waitresses were helpful but the gent at the bar - guessing the new landlord - made no effort to welcome us or anyone else that arrived after us - too busy looking at his laptop to interact with anyone. We won't be returning and sadly now wouldn't recommend to anyone else.More

Decided to try the Zetland having not been for several years what a mistake that was and what a disappointing meal . One of us had the steak and Guinness pie when we asked the waitress what potatoes it came with she told us the...potato was in the pie , and yes it was , all two small pieces , the pie itself was quite large but absolutely tasteless full of shredded meat that had been completely over cooked and not a hint of Guinness it came with a spoonful of red cabbage , which makes it all in all totally overpriced . We have had pie at many establishments it always comes with cubes of meat in a tasty gravy with a potato dish and some sort of vegetables . Your chef should try the pies at the Royal Tankerton or the George and Dragon at Sturry for two of the best , or better still change your chef who obviously can't make a basic pub / restaurant classic .More

This pub has recently changed hands to a mixed reception by the looks of things. We are Kingsdown residents and so have seen a couple of changes. Having seen some poor reviews, we decided we would see for ourselves. I have to say I was...delighted. The staff were polite, informative and attentive. The food was delicious and a meal for two (main and dessert) came to about £50 in total. It's not a wide choice but thankfully, not your usual 'pub grub'. If there is an improvement suggestion to make, I would suggest having a choice of chips/potatoes rather than the only chips on offer which were not brilliant. The pub was pretty full so the atmosphere was good and we enjoyed a lovely meal. Some of the complaints have been about inhospitable staff but we did not experience this. Some of the complaints have been about poor atmosphere but I guess that depends on when you visit. All three pubs in Kingsdown have their differences and I am glad that we can still count on the Zetland as one to visit again.More
