If you want a quiet, warm and pleasant atmosphere with great food this is the place. Good choices for all on the menu. Attentive staff.

I found this restaurant on TripAdvisor and I was pleased with the warm atmosphere that resembles an old library. My friend and I motioned to sit at the end of the bar and we were stopped by the bartender. The bartender said, "sorry those seats are reserved INCASE the owner comes in". This made me feel unwelcome as if we... More

Enjoyed a petite tenderloin here last night, we had an early dinner reservation with a 7:00pm show at the Portsmouth Music Hall (Post Modern Jukebox). The dining room was nearly empty when we arrived for our 5:30 reservation. We were given menus and a wine list. Our waitress arrived promptly and took our cocktail orders. I had a Tito's martini... From Davios to Capitol Grill to Grill 23 and beyond, Boston has superb steak houses. The Library pales in comparison in all but price. Everything is acceptable but just falls short of the high end their prices are pegged to. The old bar and dining room itself are charming architectural gems so I recommend small plates at the bar vs... More

My sister, mother and I had a girls' getaway weekend planned for the MLK holiday. We made reservations and we asked to be seated close to a fireplace. The Library was absolutely amazing. It's a great place with a romantic ambiance for couples/people to celebrate engagements, promotions, birthdays, etc. The hostess was friendly and very courteous. She made us feel... More

My son and I went for a late dinner when I brought him for orientation at UNH. I had eaten at this location many years ago (40+ years) with my family and couldn't believe it was still there. First of all, the ambiance has not changed. We sat in the bar room where the walls are lined with books. It... More

I have often visited The Library Restaurant and have never had a bad meal, never a mediocre meal! The menu changes very little and all the choices are cooked exactly as you ordered. Never seems to be rushed in any way at all. The Library is on the first floor of the old historical Rockingham Hotel. When in Portsmouth or... More

Enjoyed the room and it's ambiance. Service was very slow and our waitress was constantly forgetting portions of orders. Those who had steaks enjoyed them I had the duck special, but should have chosen steak Deserts were the hi-lite of the meal

My wife and I were impressed by the flavor of the club cut prime sirloin. The beef was cooked perfectly to our request, and was very tender. It is unusual to find hand cut french fries so nicely done. They had a rich potato taste and were perfectly crispy.
