Just ate there while in NJ on business and had a great dinner. Since it was on the company I ordered their filet wrapped in bacon, with rice and black beans. My filet did come out a little over cooked but it was still delicious....More

We were staying at the Westin nearby and were excited to try some Cuban food. While the interior is nice the food is lackluster. The fried plantains looked store-bought and there was no hot sauce or cilantro to be found. The fried plantains were good...More

My husband and I like to go to places we see on food network shows like The Best Thing I Ever Ate. When we found out that someone's favorite was a cuban sandwich from Azucar and we were staying a few blocks away we decided...More

Nice, lively place with GREAT food. Good for a date, or night out with some friends if you feel like staying local (instead of going out in the city.) I've been here a bunch of times and its always good. Great sangria too.

I eat at Azucar once a week. The Guacamole is excellent! It's a bit spicier than what I've had elsewhere, but it's excellent. My favorite dish is spicy chicken, followed by fish. My only complaint is that the portions are too big, so I often...More

My husband and I were staying at the Westin one block down and noticed diners eating at the cafe tables outside. The place looked interesting and the menu looked like authentic Cuban, so we thought we'd give it a try. We were early for dinner,...More

Description
In the booming Newport area of Jersey City, Azucar offers an escape from the surrounding corporate jungle to the carefree world of 1950s Havana. Inside, robust palm trees and Cuban nostalgia set the scene for a tropical getaway. On Thurs-Sat nights, a live band or DJ in the lounge plays all varieties of Latin music and engages guests to show off their dance moves or relax while enjoying flavorful mojitos. The center of attention is the traditional Cuban cuisine, prepared expertly by Vazquez and his loyal staff. Vazquez's attention to detail and authenticity result in dishes that make his mother proud. Upstairs is the only smoking lounge in Hudson County, a cozy enclave with dark wood paneling, deep couches, a full bar and cigar humidor, and tables for dominos and chess. Also available are a VIP room and a private party space. In season, the outdoor patio offers views of nearby Manhattan. Although you can't enter Cuba legally, a trip to Azucar certainly comes close.
