If the Hanging Gardens were one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, then Babel restaurant at Bablyonstoren is its modern counterpart. Encased in a greenhouse, the cuisine utilises and reflects the produce from their own classically arranged gardens. Despite a sometimes intense sitting, head chef Cornelle maintains a station of controlled calm (narcissistic chefs shouting commands it aint!).... More

We went to Babel for the third time, as we had enjoyed the previous visits, but this is probably the last time we would do that. The farm itself is lovely, but the gorgeous shop closes at 17h00, which does not allow anyone arriving for dinner trade a look in. The walk from the carpark to the restaurant is gravel,... More

Hi Berenice We are truly sad to hear that you did not enjoy your last visit to the restaurant. We have a farm-to-fork philosophy which means we like to serve food that is seasonal and that reflects our “pick, clean and serve” approach. Babel has a unique new style of menu, which focuses on fresh produce from the garden and... More

Visited the farm last Sunday. Whilst we enjoyed the facilities, we were greatly disappointed by the menu items available from the Greenhouse restaurant. As we do not eat pork/ham, the already limited list of items was greatly reduced. Having been shown to our table, the special containing chicken was sold out (around 13h10, so well within the lunch period), whilst... More

Hi Mustang I would kindly like to point out that we have two restaurants on the farm: Babel, our intimate signature restaurant, and the Greenhouse tea garden, where visitors to the garden can enjoy tea under the majestic old oaks. Guests can also enjoy wine tasting and delicious platters at the Tasting Room. We have noted your review on our... More

Amuse bouche: Raw, hairy veg on spikes. I prefer mine cooked and shaved. Bread plate: the most average I've experienced in SA. I don't think Chef cares about bread. Its not something you can dig up. (If you love bread then try Faber at Avondale...) Starter: Beautiful to look at. Perhaps the prettiest plates ever. I had their "yellow". Others... More

Hi Phillip Thank you for taking the time to share your Babel experience with us. We are sad to hear that you did not enjoy our freshly baked farm bread. We grow our own wheat on the farm. After the harvest, the wheat is taken to Caledon where it is stored in silos and later stoneground. This flour is sold... More

Beautiful salad, good bread, lovely wine and the best risotto I have ever eaten. The restaurant is cool and casual and the staff friendly and it's worth waiting to get a reservation because the food is just so nice.

Proudly South-African! What a joyous occassion it was, to finally be able to dine at this lovely restaurant! Stylish decor, excellent and well-informed waiter, Johnathan. He gave rather spot on advice on what to expect, what wine to order& lots of information about the farm and its activities! Our food was delicious-all three courses. Wine by the glass was a... More

The restaurant is located in beautiful surroundings. The atmosphere is easy going, local and very very fine. The service is top-notch (Jonathan is the best!), very chick but down to earth. Description
Housed in an old cow shed, Babel is a wonderful mix of Cape Dutch architecture with contemporary glass walls that makes for a simple yet edgy environment in which to try our tasty yet often unconventional combinations. We have a farm-to-fork philosophy, which means we like to serve food that is seasonal and that reflects our "pick, clean and serve" approach. Because our menu is guided by what is available in the garden, our food always reflects the season, and so in summer we may serve you a yellow salad of pineapple, gooseberries, granadillas, yellow tomatoes and apricots while in winter a slow-cooked leg of lamb in red wine is more likely. Dessert subscribes to four flavours, namely salty, bitter, sweet and sour. And while our meals are creative, we don't like to tamper unduly with our food. Our meals are always clear in structure, so that fruit and vegetables gathered daily from the garden is often served with its skin on. Helpings are generous and depending on the weather you can take your meal in the glass-enclosed restaurant or under the plane trees in the courtyard.
