Had our first sit down away from home meal today and it was blummin' delicious! Went to the Duke of Gloucester and it was so nice, plenty of space between tables, waiter and waitress service only, spotlessly clean, very welcoming, friendly chatty staff wearing face shields, aprons etc, good beer and cider and the meal was excellent. Made our 2 dogs very welcome indeed with fresh water and biscuits. Highly recommend the Steak and Ale pie with the crumbliest of pastry, and hubby had the burger tower which actually defeated him as there was so much. Best pub lunch in months and will most certainly be going back to make the most of the Chancellors £10 a meal per head giveaway for Mon-Wed during August! To Joe and staff, thank you for making us so welcome along with your other customers!

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review on TripAdvisor. It’s been a strange few months and a lot of work has gone into reopening safely whilst still offering a warm welcome and good hospitality so it’s fantastic to see it is appreciated. We will look forward to seeing you when you’re in to take advantage of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme. Thanks again,

Not eaten here for a while. New year, new menu.....
I’ve just had the beer battered fish & chips. Absolutely delicious, and I chose the northern upgrade, with curry sauce, and bread & butter. It was superb, and the fish was cooked perfectly, flakey and tender. Highly recommend, to anyone who loves fish & chips!! Proper mushy peas too!!!!!

We attended this delightful pub for a friends birthday, I had not been before and we were welcomed by Adele who served us throughout our meal.
We had a beautiful Sunday roast which was cooked perfectly and presented very well, we also enjoyed some fantastic desserts too.
The pub is full of character with exposed beams and brickwork and has a friendly atmosphere. The service is both attentive and informal and Adele made us feel very comfortable and provided a great service.
We would definitely go again, great food, lovely service, great surroundings and all very well priced

Having waited nearly an hour to even have our order taken, the person who eventually took it practically spat out "what do you want". We then experienced a further untimely wait for a starter. Despite being reassured on multiple occasions that our mains were 'nearly ready' and 'on their way', 2 hours after we arrived, a staff member came over and told us that our order had been forgotten and it hadn't even been made yet. Having arrived at 7.15pm, we left at 9.15pm having had no meal at all. We chose this place because it had such good reviews online but it is no surprise when it appears that my HONEST review on another website was removed within 12 hours. As a member of a local business, I'm really disappointed by the whole experience and will definitely be advising people to stay away.

Hi elliesD7984NM,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience from Tuesday. I completely understand your frustration and must apologise for how everything went for you. We were extremely busy due to the Governments Eat Out to Help Out scheme and while we were full in the restaurant we hadn’t anticipated the nice weather as it had forecast thunderstorms which didn’t materialise which meant the beer garden was full also. I do hope this won’t put you off trying us again in the future. I can completely understand your disappointment but this was a genuine mistake and something we will learn from. I’m not sure what happened to your other review but I would be interested to know which website you’ve left it on as that is certainly not how we manage reviews. If you could let me know at duke.gloucester@jwlees.co.uk I would really appreciate it. I hope we see you again and we get the chance to change your mind.

Currently writing this bed bound, I had the mussels…
Service in the restaurant from one of the servers was good but the other lady clearly didn’t want to be there and was evident in her service.
Food - below average. My colleges had steak and lasagne, all three were unimpressed with the quality of the steak and the lasagne had clearly been sat for a fridge/freezer for a while.
The interior was quite nice and cool but that was about the only redeeming feature of being there.
Also ordered tap water that took over 15 minutes to arrive (it wasn’t busy at all) by which point we were fed up and decided to leave. Paid for the meal and wasn’t asked if everything was ok, in fact he barely said a word to me, didn’t seem to care.
All in all, way below average.

Hands down the worst pub experience. Incompetent staff, who clearly have a monkey working in the kitchen. Arrived at our allocated table time of 5.15 to be left at the door waiting for 15 minutes whilst two members of staff walk past and not acknowledge us. Sit down, and ignored again for a further 20 minutes whilst a table who arrived 10 minutes after us have their food order taken. Finally have our order taken for a member of staff to come back 5 minutes later to say two of the meals chosen are unavailable so other meals are chosen. We are then told another meal is unavailable. Another choice made. We are then left for a further 45 minutes with no food arriving, baring in mind it’s an hour and 30 minutes since we’ve arrived at this point. We decide we don’t want to stay and wait any longer so get up and leave. A member of staff mentions that they’ve just started our food?! We pay for drinks and leave to then be told that the reason the food was taking so long was because we’ve changed our minds so many times!!! Absolute joke, rude, unfriendly staff who quite honestly haven’t got a clue what they’re doing.

Thank you for your feedback. There’s lots we can pick out from this that we can use to improve which is great.
I’m genuinely sorry to see you didn’t enjoy your visit on this occasion and we will do everything we can to make up for it if you visit us again. Since we were allowed to reopen after lockdown the team have worked incredibly hard to adapt and change how we work to comply with the governments guidelines and now with the new restrictions our business has been under even more pressure. I am incredibly proud of how the team have kept going under the pressure and kept smiling throughout it all. The kitchen team are not monkeys and the front of house team are doing their best but there is clearly more we can work on. We’re constantly looking to improve and provide the best service we can so I will take what I can from your feedback to improve for the future.
I hope you do consider trying us again as these are not usual times and this is not a true reflection of how we operate.
Take care,
Joe

I was met by the host who asked if I was here for dirnks or food too. I was seated at an excellent table near the bar and I was asked for my drink order. Excellent range of drinks on offer here! I chose and the drink was with me within a few minutes by Fin (thanks!). It took a while for someone to take my food order but once arrived I was amazed by the value and quality! The pie was excellent and cooked perfectly and full of filling and flavour. Not a regular "pub grub" pie at all! Excellent! I stayed for a few hours and the team all seemed excellent and very pleasant. Thankyou all for the excellent service and showing how a pub can be ran in a modern way!

On August 26th my husband and I with our 2 children visited the Duke of Gloucester for a meal. We were seated and advised on covid compliant measures. My son was overtired and was ‘playing up’ and a very kind waitress (she could have been the manager, Irish lady) came over to speak to me. My heart sank at first, I thought she was going to tell me to keep my kid in check ha but she was the total opposite! She was so kind and took our orders quickly so she could get the food out to him as she thought he may be hungry. She came back to chat later and was so helpful, offered us a highchair and chatted with me about ‘mum issues’. She also had a son, 3 years old and she understood totally. She wasn’t judging us like some people do when you have a child having a meltdown she was really kind and compassionate. She even assisted a family who were sat across from us when a wasp landed in their food. The poor girl looked terrified of wasps and she took the leftover food away quickly to get rid of the wasp. Eventually catching it in a napkin with her bare hands once they had left.
Have eaten here many times and never had a bad meal, consistently good food and good service and will look forward to eating there again.

Asked for a table last minute and the manager kindly squeezed us in. Returned at the alloted time and was shown to our clean table, spaciously separated from other tables. A disposable menu was provided and our drinks were promptly ordered by the Manager.
The friendly and polite waitress, in full PPE delivered our drinks and took our order.
The day's special was a fillet steak with peppercorn sauce. My husband asked to change the sauce and the chef made him a version of Diane sauce. The fillet steak was cooked perfectly served with crunchy tasty chunky chips and beer battered onion rings. The steak and ale pie was tasty, full of thick chunks of rich beef in a gravy encased in a crisp tasty pastry. The extra portion of onion rings were to die for, large crispy battered rings full of thick juicy onion. We chose a pinot noir wine, full bodied fruity red which complemented the beef dishes perfectly.
A large cup of fresh ground coffee rounded off the meal. We didn't have room for dessert.
The husband and wife management team were friendly, alert, professional and knowledgable, always keeping an eye on busy tables and promptly dealing with requests. Waiting staff were the same, alert, polite, prompt, friendly and professional.
The meal was superb, the staff were very switched on and the relaxing setting made for a very pleasant evening.

Wanted a spot of lunch with my boyfriend at the Duke of Gloucester, what a waste of time that was. We booked in on a Sunday afternoon and as we were seated we were never made aware of the wait ahead… staff are young and have 0 personality. An older lady served us and had no customer service skills, I’d actually say she was rather rude. Why come to take orders at a table when the other person isn’t sat there as they’ve popped to the gents?! A whole 50 minutes later our food finally arrived, mediocre but we still ate as we were starving by now!
What seemed to be the manager did come over and was apologetic about the wait which we appreciated, we explained no wait was mentioned and if that’s the case don’t take bookings to then make people wait almost an hour for food! We were told that the kitchen were extremely busy, but there were only a hand full of tables waiting for food!
No incentive was offered, not even a measly free drink as an apology!
We certainly won’t be returning, mediocre food and terrible staffing and personal skills at this place. It comes to something when you get better service in fast food restaurants… don’t waste your time or money here!!

My wife, 13 year old son and I went for lunch at the Duke of Gloucester today. The Covid measures in place were very thorough and the staff (Irish lady and Adele) explained them very clearly. The menu itself outlined measures taken and it was very reassuring. They had thought of everything and we could enjoy our meal feeling safe. The Irish lady even suggested a couple of alternatives from the menu for my son who then really enjoyed his piri piri burger and we had fish and chips - delicious

First of all I pre booked the table. Walked across the carpark and was greeted at door by i think a manager who showed us to the table. Few minutes and Adele came up to us took orders for drinks. Lovely lady. Very friendly and chatty. We both had large fish and chips , mushy peas , add on for £1 curry sauce and bread and butter. Adele also informed me of Friday special fizz Friday. So i had Prosecco!
Ordered deserts too.
Lovely meal. Lovely pub. Thank you Adele

Felt I had to write this as we have been using this pub for a couple of years now and always have a relaxing visit, amazing service and we've never had a poor meal - I could eat everything on the menu and not be dissapointed.
Also post lock-down their precautions are very reassuring and make you feel very safe. Dogs welcome, outside patio and plently of parking - pop in give them a try, you'll be pleased you did.
A big thanks to Joe, Adele, Jamie and Ben for keeping us sane and providing some normality in these crazy times

Visited here on a week day and the atmosphere was pleasant. It was quite busy with a large group ordering food so we were helpfully pre warned that our food may take a while and we were given the option of going elsewhere if we preferred. I'm glad we waited though as my food was excellent. It was nice to have a few vegan options to choose from and the burger was very nice.

4 of us called for a meal early Saturday half empty dining hall waitresses with little knowledge of drinks on offer. Food ordered after being told what they did have expecting to wait 20mins which turned into 55mins, food on arrival was very poor cold garlic bread with 2 lasagne's sirloin steak with a portion of FROZEN chips at £3.75 one might have expected fresh and a mixed grill no one asked if the food was OK probably knowing what they might have been told. Then went to pay and received a bill for a shade over £90 value for money NOT. Avoid.
