The food, service and ambience was absolutely first class, and couldn’t believe how reasonable it was when the bill arrived
My wife and I booked The Royal Oak to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary while in the Peak District on holiday.
We’re absolutely delighted!
We both ordered the lamb kofta starter and this could have been a lunch in it’s own right and at just over £5 was outstanding value.
We then both had the pork and black pudding which was just divine. The mustard mash was tasty and the veggies cooked to perfection.
A true delight, but unfortunately we were unable to finish it because the portion size again was far too large for us.
When the bill arrived, we were astounded that it was under £50 for two courses and drinks.
Top class. Would certainly recommend

If I'd reviewed this on the night I probably would have given it a solid 4 stars - food was good, very reasonably priced, atmosphere was friendly and casual but we were still made to feel special. Wife had the healthy option of steamed fish with seasonal veg, it was all very fresh and a generous portion. The rest of us had burgers which were tasty and well presented. Good old fashioned home-style chips, too. But I'm giving it a full 5 stars because, after trying other pubs in the area, I reckon this is one of the best, certainly for families or anyone that prefers a casual feel while dining. All the staff were lovely. Beer garden also looked stunning under the giant tree. Will return next time I'm in the area.

We visited The Royal Oak on our recent holiday nearby at mayfield snuggery.
Originally we were only going to have a couple of drinks but with the atmosphere and menu being so nice we decided to stay for some food.
The food was absolutely delicious and exceeded our expectations, the portions were also huge!
We got 10% off our entire bill for showing our lodge keys which made an already reasonably priced meal out even better. I would definitely recommend The Royal Oak for food, especially the oven roasted belly pork and if ever In the area again we would certainly come back.

We pre booked a table for nine people and were asked to pre order so that we would not have to wait on arrival. I like this idea as I believe it saves food waste. Eight of us were served and after a while the waiter noticed and asked if we were a meal short. We said yes and stated what had been ordered. 20 minutes later, by which time most of us had finished eating the meal was served. Most of our party said their meals were just OK but my fish and chips were dreadful. The batter was dark orange, definitely over cooked so I did not eat it. The fish had skin on it and the chips were not good either. I did say this to the waitress who asked if everything was OK and she said she would let the chef know. I was not sitting near to my son who also had fish and chips, but my husband was and said his batter was much lighter in colour. My drink was lime and soda which really did not taste of anything, definitely short on lime. Reviews and the menu had made us think this would be the perfect choice for the first night of our multi generational family holiday in Mayfield. We fully expected to return, however we didn’t, just shopped at Aldi and cooked.

Booked a table for 6 about a week in advance. When we arrived, they tried to put us on a table which would comfortably seat three people. We said no thanks and asked for a table for 6. They reluctantly seated us at a table which fits 6.
Service wasn't slow, but wasn't friendly either. I get that people have bad days, and that's fine, but ever waiter/waitress/barman just seemed like they really didn't want to be there.
Food was mid-priced but expensive for what it was because it was bad food. If you don't like flavour or seasoning and you love plain, boring, tasteless food that you could knock up for £3 at home in 20 mins, then this is the place for you. I have never eaten a curry so orange, yet so tasteless in all my life. A real achievement to somehow make that happen.

Where do I start, quick check-in, that's where the positives end. Room dirty, dusty, cobwebs everywhere , stains on the carpet, bedding, headboard and curtains. In the bathroom black mould, no toilet roll holder also no hand towels supplied. Food and service - Had an evening meal in the restaurant, we ordered a shared starter then I ordered a burger meal and my wife a Steak. The starter was nice even though the garlic bread was actually just bread and not toasted. The burger I received was cremated, the bread bun was not toasted and just fell to pieces and also had a large piece of lettuce root, finally the chips where just full of black eyes (bad bits) and not edible. The Steak was over cooked and full of fat. The waitress was never around to complain and even got our drinks wrong at the start. They even tried to take our starters away twice before we had even finished. The breakfast wasn't much better! didn't even bring us our toast and again the waitress was missing. The list just goes on. I would not recommend this to stay or eat at

Great fresh cooked food the staff managed to get us in as normally we would book as it gets busy. We have visited before as they allow camper stopovers the food was of excellent quality and priced reasonably portion sizes are large. We had desserts last time but couldn’t manage this time but would highly recommend this as they are well worth having . The staff are always friendly and gives the feeling of home where everyone is welcome we will be returning and travel a good hour to get there it goes without saying this is a highly recommend situates in a great location.

Fab stay, large spacious en-suite rooms with toiletries if needed. Hairdryer in drawer, tv, tea and coffee making facilities. Good shower! Breakfast included with the deal, did not disappoint! Large cooked full English. Cereal and fruit available if you wanted a lighter brekkie, I think they would oblige anything you requested to be fair it did feel like nothing was too much trouble. We had our evening meals in the bar/restaurant, again large portions and fantastic value for money and choice🍲 large sunny beer garden. Brilliant attentive and friendly staff. Thursday was burger night and was very busy so book ahead if staying with them, really good deal so worth visiting! Ideal base for Alton Towers just 15 mins by car.
Overall I am really pleased we chose The Royal Oak, we will definitely stay again next time we visit Alton Towers 💫
Thank you!!!

We were 2 couples staying just the one night. What a fantastic experience. The staff were friendly and professional, Our rooms were classed as King size and that's what they were. One couple stayed in the main building and one in the annex. The rooms were clean and conformable and no issues. The evening meals we had were all excellent and were large portions ,no one went away hungry. It was the same with breakfast the next day, well presented and large portions well cooked. Overall an excellent experience.

After visiting Dovedale my Partner and I were looking for a place to have lunch with our dog, so were looking out for a pub with a garden. We spotted this pub and decided to give it a try. Fortunately we were able to get a lovely table under the shade of a willow tree. The menu had lots of choices. We both chose the chicken and bacon Caesar salad, this was well presented and a very tasty meal and certainly didn’t skimp on portion size. The drinks were reasonably priced, service was good and friendly, a good choice whilst visiting in the area.

Stopped for a meal after visiting Alton towers. Turned up about 8pm and they sorted us a table to eat no problem. The food was all fresh cooked and delicious. I especially liked one of the specials that day, Cajun chicken in mushroom sauce. It was excellent. Everyone enjoyed their meals and portions were a good size (even my 14 year old son was full for once!). Prices were very reasonable. Totally recommend this pub for eating. In fact next time we go to Alton towers we will probably stay over in their rooms instead of driving 5 hrs round trip.

Great place to stay with fabulous food and friendly staff who went the extra mile. Varied menu with lots of specials, the game casserole was superb! But my favourite meal was the belly pork with mustard mash - WOW! Breakfast was also amazing, on the first day my partner asked if there was any fruit and although that day there was none sure enough the next day there was a variety to choose from. The breakfast cooked and served by the wonderful Jane was one of the best I’ve had, good locally sourced produce cooked well, what more could you ask for?
Lovely comfortable bed in a spacious room. Although the bathroom was a little dated it was clean and spacious and was having a refurb this month.
Could not find any fault with this little gem of a place, will 100% be returning to try the Sunday lunch.

We visited with our two (very) young children. We hadn’t booked but the staff fitted us in with an agreement it would be a quick visit (which absolutely suited us).
The staff were friendly, the bar/restaurant was warm and welcoming and the food was great. The menu looked to be mainly pub classics but the portions were plentiful and everything was tasty. Reasonable prices too and good beer.
Even though we went on an early Tuesday evening I’d definitely recommend booking as it’s understandably very popular

Good- Able to book a table for mother’s day Sunday lunch.
Staff were were pleasant
Mothers ate free sweet
Bad- Sadly we were not informed it was a carvery, the tables were not in the pub , but a larger room to the side of the pub. It was like a cattle market , one meal in quickly one out. The room looked like a canteen or big gypsy wedding!!! Very loud , very busy and not an intermit quiet mothers day meal.
The carvery was ok , boiled vegetables and selection of pork or beef. Cauliflower cheese awful, nice gravy & good choice of sweets.
Ugly- the bill !!
Not an experience i will ever endure again , felt money grabbing get as many people through the door .Spoiled mothers day
