Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A lovely pub just outside of Belper. Went for the Father’s Day’s Sunday lunch. Generous portions and very tasty, however the beef was extremely well done but flavorsome none the less. The only downside was their cauliflower cheese, as it has a sprinkling of melted...cheese rather than in a cheese sauce. Friendly staff and reasonably priced.More

Great meal to celebrate 19th birthday for family member. Tilda, our server, was friendly and attentive. The pies with big vegetables were great and the chicken curry was the best meal I've had at the Hanging Gate for 32 years. Can recommend the garlic bread...and chorizo sausage starters too.More

My wife and I dropped into this little pub on a visit to Ashbourne. We opted for a Bar snack, which was promptly delivered to our table. The food was excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful. The pub/ restaurant was homely, clean and welcoming....The toilet facilities exceptional for this day and age. We will certainly return as the menu had lots of choice. I’m happy to say it is a true country pub, worth a visit. Well done to staff and owners a little gem.More

Called on the off chance for a table for 2 and was welcomed by a very lovely, smiling lady behind the bar. We was told they will see if there was space and within minutes they had relayed us a table even though they were...obviously already busy. The setting is beautifully lit and the food was very tasty. We both had a lovely, fresh prawn cocktail and a very flavoursome lamb dish for mains. Our server was Emily, nothing seemed any trouble for her and she was so plesant . We had a great experience from start to finnish. Next time I may have space for dessert. Thank you to all at the Hanging Gate.More

The hanging gate is set in beautiful surroundings. We were attending a family get together as a party of 10 for Sunday lunch. Upon entering we decided to have a drink at the bar first as we were early. We were served quickly and efficiently....The rest of our party arrived and we were shown to our table. The place is clean and well kept. Ordered and it wasn’t too long until our starters arrived. The main courses were plentiful and presented well. All of our party enjoyed their chosen meal. Fallon was our server and she was bubbly, friendly, polite and patient with all of us. She really is a credit to the company. We all had a lovely experience and thank you again Fallon. I would certainly be back to enjoy another sirloin of beef roast dinner, the beef was soooo delicious and tender, good one to the team in the kitchen. We left happy and full to the brim, definitely recommend eating here. 5 star all round !More

Great Menu, something for everybody. More a restaurant than a pub but superb assortment of cask ales. Matt and Heather served us quickly and with a smile.

On a rare child-free evening we decided to go out somewhere local for dinner - eventually deciding on the Hanging Gate - a quaint, low ceilinged country pub on the only road through the tiny hamlet of Shottle Gate (or Shottlegate, depending on who you...ask) just outside Belper. Those place's TripAdvisor page states its in Belper - it isn't it is in Shottlegate. It was suitably rustic in its appearance both externally and internally and I felt very at home amongst the dark panelling, real candle light and the aforementioned low ceilings. We were served by a very pleasant young girl who appeared to largely be working alone, though indo think there were other staff members knocking about somewhere on the premises. I didn't get this lady's name, but she was excellent. The food didn't quite match the service. It was by no means bad, but I wouldn't write home about it. I must stress again - it was not BAD food, not by any means, but it perhaps underwhelmed slightly given I know the standard of food you can get in these slightly more rural establishments. Mind you, having said that, I ordered fish and chips. I'm not sure how inspiring you can be with an order as plain as fish and chips, and so I'm acutely aware I might be being unnecessarily critical. My wife ordered their sort of principal burger (I don't recall what it was specifically called) and she had no complaints whatsoever. I must also add that they do a sort of cheese and garlic flatbread thing here, and we ordered one to share as a starter. We were glad we opted to share, because it was a very sizeable dish and would have been too much for us to tackle solo. It was delicious by the way. For the logistical amongst you, the pub is on a long straight(ish) bit of road and you can't really miss it. You will also find a very good size car park too. I would definitely return here. Like I say, I was perhaps just underwhelmed because I ordered an underwhelming dish. Maybe my tastes are underwhelming. I'd be very happy to give this place another go.More
