Fantastic food and service. We have been go quite regularly for many years and it never disappoints. The street food menue is very reasonable and cheaper than many pubs in the area. Pascal the maître d’ is very friendly and helpful.

First visit here so not sure what to expect. It was busy but not noisy and did not detract from attentive service, thank goodness. Quickly shown to table and left to peruse menu and wine list. Good range of dishes to choose from. Wine was chilled just right and the food was fresh, hot and tasty. Overall a good atmosphere and we will bring friends next time. Ignoring the wine price, we paid £25 each for a three course lunch. 10% service charge is added to that but we thought it good value. Having read some reviews on here, I wonder if they went to the same place??!! We will return with friends next time.

We have known the Baytree for many years and the food has always been excellent. On this occasion we were again not disappointed in that respect but the atmosphere and Front of House staff are poor. It wouldn't take much effort for them to ask if your meal was okay, or if you would like any sauces with your meal etc. Even "Goodnight. Thanks very much. See you again soon" is important to some people even if you don't mean it.

Two vegetarians in a party of four. Seated just after 7:00pm on Saturday, the restaurant was almost empty when we arrived, so we were disappointed to be told that the only available vegetarian option for a starter was mushroom soup. To add insult to injury, the amuse bouche we were served was also mushroom soup. This is apparently acceptable - maybe the team need a holiday.

Booked as a special treat. Food was absolutely spot on but service seriously lacking. Booked a Prosecco brunch - prosecco was poured on top of orange juice - when we asked for a full glass we were told we’d probably have to pay. I’d expect the fizz to be an integral part of a Prosecco brunch. Apparently should be half a bottle per couple but we didn’t have as much as that. Had to ask for menu to be explained - this was done grudgingly by the manager who almost rolled his eyes. No one asked if we needed anything/water for table/ etc. Very nice waiter but he only came to bring the bill at the end. Had booked again for four people for dinner but have cancelled. Disappointing.

We visited The Bay Tree for lunch today to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I had booked this weeks ago, on our arrival it seems they don’t serve lunch on Saturday’s just champagne breakfast so we begrudgingly got some lunch menus. From this point I felt we were treated below par by all the staff even though it wasn’t our mistake, they shouldn’t have booked us in. The food we had was absolutely lovely, no complaints there but the service was appalling. At no point during our meal was we asked if our food was ok or If we needed any more drinks or anything at all. The manager was very rude to me when I asked about the menus I wish we had left at that point to be honest. Then after a lengthy wait for the bill they put a service charge on, what an absolute cheek. I have never asked for a service charge to be taken off but I did today. It is such a shame as we have had such lovely meals in the past here. However this is definitely my last meal here. Totally spoilt what should’ve been a special occasion.

I booked a table for dinner Friday 11th June 2021, a treat for my girlfriends birthday. After visiting around two years ago and having a great experience, we were both looking forward to it. We arrived promptly and were seated at our table. It then took around 30 minutes for the waiter to take our order. I found the menu incredibly confusing from both a customers and culinary point of view. The À la carte menu was very limited and you can forget about eating if you’re a vegetarian. On the reverse of the menu is a “Streetfood” section which to me seemed to be a menu that offered food at a cheaper price. I don’t understand why the restaurant appears to have moved away from offering a high quality À la carte menu? After ordering our food, we then proceeded with a 45 minute wait for our starters. The Asparagus starter was presented nicely however the poached egg was solid. I had the smoke salmon which was again, presented nicely, however the dish seemed huge compared with the Asparagus starter. We also ordered some bread which wasn’t even warmed up which seemed odd. We then waited another 35 minutes for our mains to arrive. My girlfriend ordered the risotto as a main, it arrived resembling more a rice pudding. The risotto was incredibly runny and lacked flavour. I had the seafood pasta with prawns and mussels. I love seafood however there was about 30 mussels in the dish which meant the overall dish was incredibly salty and overpowered. After asking for the bill, we were handed with a desert menu which I appreciate was a mistake however it then took another 15 minutes for the bill to arrive. The cherry on top is when an automatic 10% service charge is added to all bills. I don’t understand why some restaurants continue with this foolery? I understand when a service charge is added for large groups, but if you’re adding a mandatory service charge, maybe you should be asking yourself why you aren’t confident enough to earn tips through choice? Another point to raise is the setting of tables. Tall glasses, wine glasses, side plates, and two courses of cutlery are included on the table which depicts a premium service. However, staff need to be trained to remove wine glasses from the table if they’re not being used. Furthermore, the table should really have a tablecloth if a premium service is trying to be achieved here. Overall a very disappointing experience, particularly after travelling from Nottingham for this. You’d be much better going to somewhere like World Service in Nottingham for their three course lunch which is priced at £35 per person. This lacklustre experience cost £85, at which I would expect a more premium experience.

Our table was booked for 7:30. We waited over an hour for our first course. Mussels were delicious but chicken wings were not as advertised ie no chips. Main course was not bad although my daughters chips arrived 5 minutes later than our food. The waiter spilt red wine on my husbands trousers but to be fair he did resolve the situation quickly. Why is it only Pascal that can take food orders? We had a £50 voucher for breakfast from pre lockdown which we handed in on arrival. Big mistake! Having read previous reviews we were also treated as if we were insignificant and looking for a cheap night out. The £50 was initially left off the bill so we had to remind them about it. They then gave us £49 and on questioning said that breakfast was £49 despite the voucher being for £50. £1 is irrelevant to us but obviously not to them! At the end of all this we were charged an automatic 10% service which on reflection is not surprising. We certainly wouldn't be leaving any tip otherwise. Despite all this the restaurant was busy which confirmed our feeling that regulars are given a lot of attention and people like us with vouchers are treated differently. Next birthday I'm going back to the Hammer and Pincers!!

Joy! Who'd have thought you'd find a cracking restaurant like this in the small township of Melbourne, Derbyshire. Really enjoyed our lunch here. Very tasty food which was fresh, not overcomplicated and nicely presented. The full menu was available. The chefs here achieve that difficult trick of presenting a plate of food which at first appears simple, but is cooked with the precision that requires such care and skill. My portion of Turbot was generous and cooked au point. The selection of vegetables were perfectly sliced into batons in the classic french style, Crisp and full of flavour, I haven't seen this before outside very fancy London West End restaurants. Was it appreciated? Oh Yes, it was! Desserts were lovely. The wine list was Okay and fair value, arguably a bit thin at the top end but with the crushing costs of the covid pandemic I can fully understand that this is no time for the patron to be splashing out on expensive wines only occasionally ordered. For a Wednesday lunchtime one would expect 'service' to be quiet but clearly this restaurant is well known locally and some locals were taking advantage of a brunch offering, and ladies who lunch were clearly regulars. 'Worth a detour', I'd say.

Took a gamble trying somewhere new and so glad we did! We were an earlier booking at 6:30pm but the restaurant soon filled up with other reservations by 7pm. Even when it was quiet beforehand it was a lovely experience. The staff were kind and courteous throughout, it had a great ambience and the food was terrific. We both had the lemon sole & salmon for our mains, served on a hot plate which makes a massive difference. This was followed by the chocolate tart and the carpaccio of pineapple. Lots of care had gone into every dish and the quality of ingredients were second to none, unlike other places we’ve been to recently in the same price point. We couldn’t fault anything - the flavour combos were spot on for all courses. I never usually go for a chocolate dessert but loved it. Homemade tart with perfect pastry, good quality chocolate, homemade/local raspberry sorbet and berry compote - simply delicious! It’s a particular joy to go out for a special occasion when where you’re going lives up to expectations to match the cost. Thank you! Keep it up!

We visited for a Prosecco breakfast today as a relative had bought us a voucher. When we arrived the atmosphere was off - almost silent in the restaurant. We then were offered a very limited menu. At the end of our meal I asked for another glass of Prosecco to which Pascal came out with a glass for me and my partner telling us that we’d already had our limit of half a bottle between us but he’s giving us it anyway. It was quite sarcastic and rude and we definitely hadn’t had half a bottle between us. I said that we hadn’t very politely and I got told “I’m not going to argue with you”. Pascal then went back to the kitchen and told his staff that he we had had half a bottle which we and the whole restaurant could hear. Appalled by the entire experience. (1) they should state the limit when you arrive if you’ve got a voucher and (2) they should keep better track of who’s having what. I had 3/4 of a 125ml glass to start and then got a tiny top up part way through. That is not 1/4 of a bottle. I felt like it was so rude and wish we didn’t get given the “extra” prosecco. In fact, I refused to drink it as I was so put off by this point, luckily my partner drank it so they couldn’t reuse it on anyone else! Will not go back and do not recommend.

I had heard such wonderful things about the Bay Tree that I booked a table for two. I have to say that our evening was lovely, the food was tasty and we had a lovely time. But the service was very slow - my boyfriend was left waiting 45 minutes for a glass of wine, and it took them at least half an hour to bring us the bill. I would have given 5 stars if the service had been better (of which a tip was added to the bill automatically!!) but all in all a lovely evening.

Booked a table for four 24/5/21 and was surprised that the menu had altered so much. Instead of the fine dining that we were used to it was street food and not very appealing street food at that. I have a profound dislike of coriander and told the Maitre d' this and didn't want any anywhere near my food but after eating the first two very ordinary courses the dessert arrived with the dreaded C stuff on!! Who puts coriander on puddings!! After pointing this out to the Maitre d' he seemed to think this was funny and that it was my fault for not reminding them. Unbelievable!!!

Some friends gave us a voucher for the Champagne breakfast to help us celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. From the moment we walked in the service was spot on. Our coats were taken off us before we were shown to our table. The staff were friendly and attentive, we weren't rushed at all. The food was delicious and plenty of it. We couldn't fault anything, we will definitely be going again. It was a very special treat for a very special anniversary ❤
