Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Had a beautiful evening meal and wonderful relaxing overnight stay. Restaurant busy but still had an excellent meal and great service. Very comfortable and spacious room all in keeping with style of the venue. Breakfast in the morning was also excellent.

It's been a while since we last visited and the quality is just as good as before. We each opted for the Chicken and the care taken by the chefs was evident with perfection in all parts to the dish. The staff were warm and...friendly and really helped ease us through the evening. Cocktails are a must if you visit as well!More

We found this place online and decided to try whilst away. The food was brilliant and following advice from our waitress we left more than satisfied. With just a short walk home afterwards we each enjoyed their a la carte menu paired with their choice...of wines. If you're out that way or nearby I would definitely recommend paying a visit!More

With some friends we had not seen for many years. There were 5 of us so I had asked for a round table when I booked in person, weeks in advance, and I watched them happily write it in the book. When we arrived last...Saturday evening neither of the round tables were free. We live in Tideswell and have dined here many times over the last 6 or 7 years. Our best experiences are Sunday lunch, but evening meals have been very hit and miss, small and over priced. Several main meals now over £30. One of our group ordered fillet steak medium. It came rare so we returned it asking for it to be put back on rather than start again and have it arrive after everyone had finished. 13 minutes later it came out and the waitress said the chef had started again…and he had cooked it exactly the same, clearly rare (not just pink) in the middle. It had to be sent back again. The waitress to her credit volunteered to take it off the bill but the meal was pretty much ruined for the individual and the group who all felt bad for her as we had finished our food well before. We ordered two dessert wines but the waitress came back to tell us they didn’t have any. My chicken dish was far too small and the chicken well over cooked (ironically). The rest of the food was good but with a bill of £310 (excluding the steak but including the annoying charity assumption hidden in the middle of the list of items) it wasn’t the top quality meal for our friends we had hoped for. I hope the manager will look at their water value, decent portion Sunday roasts and apply the same principle to the main menu. A bit more food and a bit less price and more attention to detail would keep this lovely venue in business, otherwise it will fail. Already we can see numbers are declining.More

It’s fair to say that, although the food was alright, my friend and I thought it was expensive for what we had. I had the classic chicken caesar salad which I enjoyed although, at £15.95, I think it’s at the top end pricewise. After all,...it’s only romaine lettuce, chicken breast with some parmesan sprinkled on top followed by a drizzling of dressing; hardly award-winning cooking! However, we both thought that my friend’s meal of beetroot risotto, goats cheese & pak choi was overpriced at £19.95, particularly given that it was a small-ish portion size. There were few people dining, and little atmosphere, when we visited on a Thursday lunchtime. When we came to pay the bill, we’d already decided that we wouldn’t go back but, had we not already come to that conclusion, the added charity donation (25p, I think) confirmed our decision. Giving to charity is something that my friend and I both do; we do so graciously and without being asked. However, to add a charity donation to the bill without asking customers first or making them aware, even if it’s only 25p, is underhand. Of course, we donated (neither of us is mean) but there needs to be transparency about what they’re doing. I also think that, because it’s such a small amount, it’s assumed that customers won’t complain for fear of looking stingy.More

Went for a special birthday treat. Lovely welcome, great cocktails but we waited 2 hours for food which was ok for most of us but too long for elderly parents. I think they were understaffed (although very friendly). Food was tasty but the sharing platter...starter was a garlic flatbread at £10.95! I’d mentioned months ago that it was a special birthday and was told that a special dessert would be arranged but nothing came and it was too late to do anything about it although I did mention it to the front of house. I was disappointed about that. Overall it was ok.More

I popped in to Merchants Yard for a drink one Saturday evening and really enjoyed the comfortable seating, elegant decor and relaxed atmosphere so much I brought my family back the next day for Sunday lunch. It has a reputation as doing an excellent roast...and we were still left surprised with how good it was. Freshly carved meat, mountains of seasonal veg, yorkies and roast potatoes were served to the middle of the table for you to share out. Everything was exceptional quality and there was plenty of it for 4 very hungry people! Our two daughters (4 and 1) were well entertained by the staff and loved the food. We'll be back next time we're in Tideswell!More

Had a long weekend in Tideswell and decided to try Merchant’s Yard takeaway pizza. Easy to order, only had to pick them up half an hour later. Exceptionally tasty, we had one Brie & Red Onion and one Beef Salami. The service was very good...and reasonably priced.More

Finding myself in Tideswell alone and having dined at TMY several times before with my family, I decided to treat myself and have lunch there. Opening hours on the website say 12 noon till late. I walked in about 12.15 but it felt like I...was arriving early as the set up was still going on and windows were being cleaned. I was asked to take a seat on the sofas to have a drink before ordering food. I wasn’t asked if I wanted to sit inside or out, but given it was such a beautiful day I said I would prefer to sit outside. I ordered the fillet steak which on the menu says it comes with twice cooked chips, confit tomato, portobello mushroom and watercress. I ordered my steak medium and for me it was a little on the rare side but well seasoned and delicious. I also ordered peppercorn sauce which was really good, thick and plentiful. I was brought a small bread roll before my steak arrived. On reflection I should have kept this to mop up the peppercorn sauce. The chips could have been better - for the price £32.95 - I would have preferred more homemade style chips. These felt like frozen. The promised watercress was not on the plate - I didn’t ask for it as I was hungry and didn’t want to wait but if advertised it should be there unless you tell the customer you don’t have it. Other diners sitting outside appeared to be enjoying their meals and it all looked very appetising. Service was friendly but could have been a little sharper and more polished. In conclusion, do go, the food is excellent but check that all the elements of a dish are available.More

We dined here as a treat whilst away and everything was exceptional. The staff were very well mannered, attentive and helped with all of our menu questions (A few picky eaters!). A good variety of food all cooked perfectly to select from on the menu...ensured our whole family enjoyed the trip out. The restaurant had such character and a really vibrant atmosphere to really make it a special evening. Many thanks to the servers who helped complete our holiday.More

This place really flatters to deceive, the pictures online look lovely but in reality the large open plan refectory is an acoustic nightmare but that is only the start of the issues. Service was poor and it was clear that the young waiting staff have...received little or no training and seemed to have little or no supervision. No idea how to take an order, no offer to provide condiments and when American mustard was requested English was provided in an unmarked container - quite a shock to the senses! Food was worse than the service. Out of eight meals ordered three steaks were anaemic but still overcooked, two burgers were so dry that they were inedible, mac and cheese was bland but like the pizza just okay. We were so disappointed with the food served that we declined desserts. The only plus was that we had a lovely bottle of Douro served at just the right temperature. In short avoid if you want a good meal - we had better food at a fraction of the price in each of the pubs at which we ate in Tideswell, over the weekend.More

I have eaten at The Merchant's Yard many times and the food is always good. On my last visit, however, the food was still good but very much overpriced. (I have been to more expensive places but The Merchant's Yard is not in their league...for quality (e.g. a Simon Rogan restaurant).) Main courses were around £25.00 but required side dishes for potatoes/chips and for vegetables. 'Green vegetables' comprised a few small broccoli florets and a small amount of shredded cabbage...for £4! Dessert were £10 (a.k.a. £9.95). Pleasant staff, food served hot. I will not be returning any time soon. Not worthy the money.More
