Chicken schnitzel a homemade beef burger with a sack load of skinny fries, salad, and a fine homemade coleslaw, it certainly isn’t fine dining but good pub grub it is, at slightly elevated prices.
The welcome and friendliness of the staff was great and clearly some efforts had gone in to sorting out a Covid safe one-way system which only really breaks down during the travel to the loos from either bar due to the inconsiderate Georgian architects small corridors and no mind for the inevitable pandemic.
All in all good food, nice place but maybe just a little pricey for what they are offering.

We booked this hotel because the hotel our friends were staying in was fully booked. We could not have done better. In the event it turned out to be much better accommodation than the ' upmarket ' hotel our friends were in near Wiverton
The Kings Head hotel does not have many rooms, but ours was spacious, and whilst not ostentatious, it was decorated and furnished very well for our needs.
Whilst there are no parking facilities, we did not find it a problem overnight, as the road directly opposite had parking available from 5pm until 9am the following morning, and places were plentiful. There is also a car park within walking distance that is very reasonably priced.
Now for the really wow factor. Breakfast is not served in the hotel, but a short distance across the road in another hotel. Byfords. you will be given a voucher each which entitles you to have whatever is on the breakfast menu and double if you need. The food was outstanding. A full English to die for. The staff here could not be more attentive and pleasant. As were the staff in the Kings Head, and here a mention is needed for Sarah and Giles. Both were the most helpful and polite staff you could hope to meet.
Its a definite return trip for us.

Visited this Restaurant on numerous occasions over the past 4 years and this being the worse one yet!The steak we ordered was poor over priced and tough of which you struggled to cut with the steak knives they gave us. Along with disappointing options for vegetarians as well ie one dish!
This has gone down hill so fast from our previous visits around Christmas time. You can see that with the amount of people eating there compared to other eateries in holt ie The Feathers Resturant was packed compared to the kings head every night.
They need to change quickly or at our next visit at Xmas 2020 it will be closed as It’s obvious which one the locals prefer.

We arrived and got seated fairly quickly, the waiter came and took our order, we asked about the gluten free meals and were advised they were low gluten as they were made in a kitchen that used gluten indredients. When the young waiter came to take our order we asked if the burgers were gluten free, he said no as the buns contained gluten, which is obvious! we then asked if the burgers were gluten free if we had them without the bun,or with the gluten free bread that was on the menu, as this was an option we had when we had visited before, he said he thought they would be but as he didn't seem sure we asked if he could go check, which he did, reluctantly. He came back and advised us they could do a chicken breast in a gluten free roll, as a burger option. As some of the other meals had low gluten beside them, yet had gluten containing item, we had no faith that the meals we would eat would be gluten free,so we decided not to eat there as we didn't want to risk being ill. He did apologies for not being able to accommodate us.
This is not why I have given only 2 stars as I know how hard it can be so serve gluten free food.
The reason I was most unhappy was when I went to pay for the drinks, I handed over the cash and waited for my change, the young waiter looked at me and asked quite rudely 'did you want your change?! If I hadn't of wanted my change, I would have said to keep it when I handed the money over!!!
Some etiquette training I think may be required!

Absolutely surprised and delighted with our visit to The Kings Head. Absolutely delicious food all round (2 adults and a child ordered). Beautiful restaurant area situated at the back of the pub. The food was all cooked to an excellent standard and they made a couple of minor changes very willingly. The service, although we were made aware they were short staffed which was good to be told of, was excellent and the servers were very polite and accommodating. A calm atmosphere, family friendly, with colouring for the children and clean facilities, it's a hidden gem for really tasty and satisfying food. Would most definitely recommend.

Went for a very nice afternoon lunch a couple of weeks ago and got served by a lovely young lady with red hair (didn't catch her name) she was very attentive to my precise order. The food was delicious and very well priced. We will definitely be returning!

We had a wonderful family meal here whilst staying near to Holt. It was a last minute choice as a reservation we had at another restaurant was cancelled. I had tried booking a table here the week before but was told by the gentleman who answered the phone, rather abruptly, that bookings weren’t taken and to just turn up before hanging up. However, having sat there I could see people were turning up for bookings so perhaps I caught them at a bad time.
Despite this first impression I was pleased with the service we received on the night, the staff who were attentive and friendly, and the food was good. The portions were generous, especially on the children’s menu and good value for money.
Overall, if you’re looking for a nice pub for dinner and you’re in Holt I’d recommend coming here

Walked here from a nearby village for dinner, had not booked but staff were very efficient in accommodating us and ensuring they completed all the safety protocols. The pub is a quirky old building with extensions and these have been put to good use to maintain a great atmosphere while keeping people apart. Selection of drinks was great and food was delicious!

The pub itself is a decent place to have a drink but as a restaurant on a night - not worth it I think. The food is below average, hard fries and a piece of paper under the food which just got soggy and in the way. The whole family had burgers and all of us were underwhelmed. Also, the seating area is really uncomfortable - a big bench really so would recommend cushions for dining!
Our server was very rushed off his feet, with a full restaurant. Not his fault, but things took a while to come such as menus and drinks. There’s nicer places to eat in the area, but as mentioned I would go back to have a drink in the friendly bar area.

First time I've eaten out since March and this place didn't disappoint. Staff were rushed off their feet, but meals were spot on and we didn't have a long wait. All four of us really enjoyed our food. I went for the chicken snitzel and it was cooked perfect, with fresh salad and gorgeous chips. The portion sizes were almost American too, so this four happy and full people definitely be dinning there again.
This is definitely a good place for family, really nice atmosphere and the food fairly priced, not something I was expecting in Holt.
Unfortunately I was driver for the day so couldn't drink, but did notice a good variety of quality beers...Next time.
Good luck guys, sincerely hope this place survives the dark days, they really deserve too.

Ran in here as it was pouring with rain and partner and son were at the barber opposite. Managed to get a comfortable table with my daughter and staff were very relaxed about us waiting for the rest of the family to arrive. My daughter has Coeliac and we were thrilled to discover a gluten free dish on the kids’ menu. The waitress was also extremely well informed about what else was gluten free and stopped us ordering the chips. This was much appreciated. The food was fine. The ambience extremely pleasant. Thanks for being so accommodating. Will come again.
(It would be fabulous if in the future they might offer milk alternatives and also hot milk to have with coffee - but this is a very small point as we had a great time.)

Six of us arrived in Holt at approx. 1.15pm on Sunday 27th September after arriving at The Walpole Arms in Itteringham for our pre-booked lunch to find a closed pub! We called the King’s Head and they told us they had a table for us as soon as we could get there. We knew nothing about the pub but were just happy to get some food! We were warmly welcomed and shown to our table, drinks swiftly arrived followed by very tasty food. Our waiter was very friendly with a good sense of humour and dog treats for dolly the dog! Well done and thank you for accommodating us so well at short notice, we will be back!

Another great night at the Kings Head. The food goes from strength to strength. Second time we’ve tried the chicken schnitzel it’s beautifully cooked, moist and succulent chicken - excellent sauce and delightful chorizo mash.
The staff do an amazing job in difficult circumstances and with sometimes not very cooperative customers - we are all in this together, customers might like to try not to behave like prima donnas, you’re not a special case!...
Carry on improving, carry on the good work, really enjoying coming back to you on a regular basis. Thanks again and we’ll done....

I have visited the Kings Head twice in the last month (before and after a trip abroad). The first time the barman was in the adjoining bar talking to someone, not serving him drinks (looking in a paper together) while three of us waited to be served. When he did serve it was very slow and lacked eye contact/ cursory engagement. Later that visit I came back into the bar to order food ( we were sitting outside) and the barman had been replaced by two young women who could not have been nicer: friendly, efficient and professional. Yesterday evening we went to the KH for a drink and had the same desultory service from a barman. We have just bought a property in the centre of Holt but will try the Feathers next time. The KH is a nice pub but is being let down by some of its staff.

We stopped here for lunch after exploring the shops of Holt and so glad we did.
Warm, welcoming environment , very spacious and the staff were great.
Particularly the waiter that looks free us throughout, we had our 1 year old with us and he was great with her . She was totally fascinated by him and he made time for her which helped us relax and feel much more comfortable.
Would highly recommend The Kings Head to families with young children 😀
Our food was lovely too, we have the fish burger and pork/chorizo burger, both of which were delicious and we didn't have to wait long either which was once again great as little one didn't get fed up waiting.
Thankyou Kings Head, we hope to return soon!
