We booked a weekend away to escape the city whilst covid-lockdown restrictions were being relaxed. A little concerned, as our first stay away since March, wasn't sure what to expect, how well establishments would be handling the changes and worried that our trip would feel impersonal with everything managed by app. We had nothing to worry about! Check-in was efficient and we felt safe that management had gone to great measures to assure the safety of visitors and staff, without it feeling officious. We had booked the smallest room, but that was absolutely fine for us. Our room was lovely and cosy (a little too warm the first night, but that's summer!) and a perfect base for beautiful Southwold. Breakfast was wonderful, all the ingredients of the full English of an exceptional standard. We booked a meal for the Sunday night, which was absolutely amazing. The prices a little higher than I would usually pay, but Southwold in general isn't a cheap resort and the standard of the food and cooking more than justified the cost - particularly given the efforts the owner has gone to to ensure a safe dining environment. I loved the outdoor canopied areas which had been constructed to serve customers outdoors whilst still protected from the elements. Dining in the restaurant also gave us the opportunity to meet Andy, the restaurant/accommodation owner, who made us feel so welcome, such fantastic personal service which he gives to all his guests. It was my first visit to this part of the coast and absolutely loved it. I wouldn't hesitate to stay at Sutherland House again should we come back to explore further.

We had such a lovely evening. Firstly the hosts were so welcoming and attentive throughout the night. They should be applauded for taking the on challenge of social distancing and providing an environment that is very safe whilst somehow creating a wonderful and enchanting atmosphere. The dining is currently in the garden area and the owners have built separate wooden , pods/booths , around the side of a lovely little garden . Under cover and with some nice lighting and heaters we felt very pampered and looked after. It had a lovely feel once it got dark. Menus and ordering worked very smoothly from an app based system from our table. We had to leave by 9 pm to avoid disturbing neighbours but with the sitting starting at 6:30 /6:45 then we never felt rushed. And so to the food. Excellent. Fresh, top quality ingredients cooked well. I had Cromer crab followed by a very good steak. My wife had mussels followed by sea bass which she very much enjoyed. Good sized portions and lovingly presented. Deserts did not disappoint, my bread and butter pudding one the best I have eaten. The wine list looked pretty solid and our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc was excellent value for money. All in all a splendid evening. We will definitely be back when we next return to Suffolk.

We booked online to have our first meal out since lockdown-we were lucky enough to be on holiday in Southwold. The restaurant is serving meals outside in very well thought out , comfortable and cosy booths. Menus are accessed by a QR reader on the table. Easy to use and to navigate. The food was excellent and the staff went out of their way to make us feel, welcome, safe and special. Highly recommended.

The food was excellent we had one of the fish courses on the menu it was delicious although not a vast menu you had choice of two fish one meat and two vegetarian. Served in the garden in private pods catering for approximately 24 guests each party having their own pods, it is a small garden surrounded by houses so you have to leave by 9pm so that's why the last sitting was 7pm the service was fast and efficient so you did not feel rushed . The dessert we had was the chocolate torte and this again was excellent, together with our sauvignon blanc wine this was a very pleasant experience at a reasonable price. Would highly recommend this restaurant if you are visiting the area.

Sutherland House has done it again. Exciting and innovative food, great service, beautiful outdoor eating and a new approach to the menu that shows a genuine belief in the environment. I had scallops and sea bass. The sea bass fillet was huge, and perfectly cooked. Hubby had monk fish goujons and pork belly. Both were delicious. Steak is off the menu, following an interaction with David Attenborough about the damage to the environment caused by cattle farming. And the menu is no worse for it. I finished off with the famous bread and butter pudding, lovely as always. Our favourite place to eat a special meal in Southwold, we will be back before our holiday is over.

We both enjoyed our choices very much ; monkfish curry, veg wellington, cheesecake and bread& butter pudding. Portions are generous so 2 courses were more than enough for us and we didn’t have an overly long wait for the main courses although we would have ordered a few olives to nibble on if such a thing had been available. I did feel that having to leave your table to serve yourself to water felt a bit down market and definitely not fine dining. Overall a pleasant evening with good food but nothing exceptional.

The restaurant is only serving outside in the garden that has been added to with outdoor heaters and cedar cabin individual seating ares under cover encircling a beautiful old tree that has been designed so thoughtfully by the Hotel owner. Using the menu was so easy and the food was so so good. A great deal of imagination and hardwork has gone into making this safe and comfortable for the customers.

Visited Sutherland House on a Saturday and the whole experience was excellent from beginning to end. We were warmly greeted at the door and quickly shown to the dining room where we were able to select any of the available tables. The dining room is a lovely space and has a great ambience. Service throughout was very friendly and struck the right balance between informal but efficient. The wine list was well thought through and the selection would cater for most tastes and was sensibly priced. The food - what can I say, there was some really accomplished cooking coming from the kitchen. All dishes / courses myself and my partner had were excellent, there was no looking at your partners plate and having meal envy as they were all equally good. Starters of the salmon and the celeriac were just the beginning of a stunning meal, there was some real flair in the designs of both dishes that continued through each course. Mains consisted of the pork belly which was beautifully "melt in the mouth" cooked with some great taste combinations and textures on the plate. My wife had the Pan fried cod which was cooked to perfection (so often restaurants can overdo the cooking of fish) and the risotto was packed full of flavour. We both opted for the Bread and |Butter pudding and this was probably the best I have ever had and was a hearty sized portion. The food presentation throughout was of a really high standard and the portions sizes would satisfy all but the most ravenous of appetites. With regards to Covid safety, the restaurant evidently take this very seriously. Tables were well spaced with screens between some of them. Plenty of hand sanitisers scattered throughout the place and staff wearing face masks. Worth noting that they ask customers to wear face masks when entering and moving around the space, which is totally fine, but remember to have one with you (although I believe they have some spare which that they will sell to you if you forget). None of these precautions negatively affected the evening in any way. All-in-all an exceptional meal and I would highly recommend people book a table here when in Southwold as food, service and ambience doesn't get much better than this.

Booked this charming restaurant just after booking a hotel stay in Southwold. The booking was made several months ago because “sit down” restaurant places are difficult to obtain in the delightful small town. We were surprised that we were seated outside, but so was everyone else! The rear garden had been transformed into a restaurant “grotto”, the atmosphere increasing as the dusk rolled in from the sea. The service and food were first rate. Andy, our server and part owner, was friendly and incredibly quick without giving any impression of rushing. He warned us that not ordering starters meant that the wait for a main course might seem longish. We didn’t notice. My wife had poached monkfish in a “fruits de mer” curry with turned saffron potatoes. The curry was finely balanced, with plenty of zizz coming as an after. I had slow cooked local belly pork which was beautifully presented and a fine dish to eat. The side of French beans with sun blush tomatoes was an excellent accompaniment. Desserts were equally impressive, with a very masculine bread and butter pudding served with marmalade ice cream, whilst the other was a Tiramisu, one of the best I have had outside Italy. The by the glass wine choice was limited, but we each had a good wine to accompany. This would be a place to return to - both Southwold and Sutherland House.

Whilst we appreciated the effort Andy had gone to by installing the wooden huts to facilitate outside dining, I’m afraid it wasn’t for us. We dined on a chilly evening and had to sit in our jackets. We did not feel we could linger as we were told the owner’s children were inside waiting to go home. We sat at wooden picnic tables- not very comfortable, were not offered a pre dinner drink or any nibbles and ordered through the App. The food when it came - steak- was ok but of pub grub standard. It was not the fine dining experience we were looking forward to despite the prices charged. I am sure the owner will take issue with my comments as he does not take criticism very well. To sum up, the food was overpriced for what it was, the outside dining was uncomfortable and we would not return

Spent two nights at this excellent little medieval house. Old world charm with modern amenities. Extra special restaurant boasting 2 rosettes...had a very fine 3-course dinner and the pan fried sea bass was simply delightful. A hearty full English breakfast was had each morning, with special mention given to the home-made black pudding! Thoroughly recommend Sutherland House, whether for a night or two or longer. You won't be disappointed.

On a short break to Southwold, and being a bit apprehensive about the new Covid rules, we visited Sutherland. A friendly welcome and we were escorted to the garden and the new layout of open fronted stables, well constructed and cosy. Ordering was simple with the new app and the food was delightful. The Seared Tuna Starter was absolutely delicious. We all enjoyed our Mains, the standouts being the Pork and the Halibut, all cooked and presented to perfection. Attentive service added to the whole experience. Can't wait to go again.

The two of us visited here for dinner earlier this week (8th Sept), and it could not have been done any better. Firstly on arrival you are greeted at the bar area where you are informed of the set up. As we are in September, you will dine in the garden where it is set out so you practically have your own dining area. Perfect for couples who if like myself like a little privacy.Patio heaters throughout and quite protected from any wind so not cold, but remember dining in the evening in September you may want a jumper or something. Things are different now and if you not been out to eat for a while please know that you can not just turn up and walk around back and forth like we all could 9 months ago. I think from October they planning to go back inside. You will be seated at you table and be shown and informed of how the order process happens. Nothing to be fazed by, its just different. The menu is viewed via the camera on your smart phone, so your experience will be made so much easier if you have one of these with you. The service is excellent everything explained clearly and any queries answered, the couple that run it really know their stuff but they are not at all stuffy about it, so for example if you not sure about something ask, and if there is something on a dish that you may not like then ask them to leave it off. We been here many times now over a few years and NEVER had a bad meal or experience. Even in these challenging times the quality of the food has not gone down. Plenty to choose from especially for fish lovers. But we both choose as our main dish pork fillet and black pudding wellington, and it was delicious. All in all service excellent food excellent,3 courses each, Glass of fizz and a St Peters cider (highly recommend) bottle of wine. £114 all in. Just make sure you book well in advance!!

We ventured here on a recent week-end in Southwold (having booked quite a long time in advance). Upon entering, the social restriction arrangements were thorough without feeling too onerous (a temp check, some screens, making sure we wore masks and hand sanitizer available). Well spaced tables and an introduction about how the QR code worked to see the menu and put in the first order. Every table was occupied, but we were well spaced and it all was very comfortable. The food was excellent. Not only a fairly large and varied menu, but very good. Moules and salt & pepper squid as our starters, with steak and halibut for mains. A couple of nice G&Ts to start, a bottle of nice white wine and glass of Malbec with the steak were all good quality and a sensible price. All of the team on duty got the balance right of attentive, but not in your face and they seemed to work very well together and complimented each other well. With 5 tables in our area, we all ended up having a large discussion with the owner at one point and we didn’t realise there would be an impromptu cabaret thrown in!! All in all, a really nice night, good staff, good food and good Covid precautions. We look forward to our next visit

Perfect evening in such a wonderful, newly built outdoor seating area. Intimate booths for 2 (1 able to take 4 and another 3 which we occupied) allowed you to feel totally Covid safe. The garden was beautifully lit and full of colour. The lengths this restaurant had gone to protect its diners and staff where exemplary and way beyond other venues. The food was outstanding all ordered via a menu available from an app based system. A very extensive wine list - we chose a very nice Lugana wine. The lobster and chips were the best we’ve ever had. Add to that the wonderful welcome and service from our hosts - what more could you ask for. This was our first meal out after lockdown and was well worth waiting for. It was such a special evening - we can’t wait to visit again. This outdoor area is a great addition to this great restaurant.
