Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had booked our table in advance and additionally rung ahead to say we would arrive later than planned. On arrival we were well greeted and drinks promptly arrived- however we had a long wait for our meal which then was delivered over a period...of time. However the food was tasty and well presented. It was a cold day but the pub was absolutely freezing- there appeared to be no heating in the vacinity of our table and the fire despite being lit was too far away to benefit. Enjoyable meal but disappointing atmosphere and experienceMore

Firstly we have always loved this pub and the food has always been great… so not sure what on earth has happened recently to let this slip so drastically. We visited for a Sunday roast - when you haven’t been asked if you want drinks...or even been given a menu 25 minutes after sitting down, alarm bells start to ring. We were on the verge of leaving at this point. Staff were sparse and seemed to be avoiding us, apart from one poor lady who seemed to be absolutely run off her feet. Eventually we ordered drinks and two roasts, this was then followed by another 40 minute wait . Eventually the same lady realised how long we had been waiting and chased up our order which then arrived. The meat was delicious but all other elements were 1. stingy portion sizes and 2. average at best, with the parsnips still raw! We didn’t bother with puddings as we didn’t fancy another long wait. Our waiter was clearly new which is fine, but he literally had no idea and we felt sorry for him as the other staff seemed to be ignoring him - I think some training is in order! Only leaving this review in the hope that action is taken done to improve the dire situation.More

We stayed here overnight after a wedding. Room was lovely and staff polite when we arrived. We were asked to choose a time to take breakfast so did so happily. However, the next morning when we came down for breakfast there were no staff members...to be found. We had to search around the whole hotel to find anyone (the cleaner who then called the manager). It took 45 minutes to be served (not wonderful tasting) coffee. At this point we were offered food with no menu offered or anything the lad said ‘whatever you want’ when we enquired what was on offer. I requested eggs on toast and my husband asked for any version of a full English they could do. After 1.5hrs of waiting, a second table had arrived for their breakfast and we still hadn’t seen the waiter again. Neither breakfast was a difficult ask and especially as we had had to choose a time for breakfast we were shocked by this. We left our key and a note explaining this was not acceptable and left without breakfast as we had already wasted too much of our day waiting. We were called later that afternoon by a reticent waiter saying his boss had told him he had to apologise (not very convincing!) and offered a £20 refund total. We chased and chased the Inn for the refund and eventually had to speak to their accountant directly to get the money which we don’t believe would actually have been refunded otherwise (we were also waiting for £150 from a night cancelled previously within their cancellation policy which also hadn’t been refunded). All in all a terrible experience for which we were refunded just £20 a whole month after our stay. All I can say is don’t stay here.More

Very poor experience. I sent the email below to provide the pub an opportunity to respond. Heard nothing after a week so posting here. I booked a table for 9 people for lunch . We arrived on time, but waited 1 hour and 40 minutes...for any food which is unacceptable by anyone's standard. The table of 4 next to us arrived 45 minutes after us, received their food, ate it and left the pub before we got our food. Not once did your staff proactively come over, instead we had to get up from the table and find them x3 times for an update. We were told that some of the items on the menu take longer too cook than others which is nonsense, we had 2 x veggie burgers, a cold meats platter, a soup, fish and chips and normal burgers. These are quick cook plates. Incredibly the meat platter NEVER turned up and this was lunch for two of our people who were sharing so they went without anything. The two veggie burgers were so over cooked they were rock hard so both were in edible, you staff took the cost off the bill. So out of 9 meals 4 could not be fulfilled in 1 hour and 40 minutes. When the food did finally arrive someone from the kitchen did come over and explain and again was friendly. For ref the pub was at average capacity. I will say when we spoke with your staff they were friendly and polite. We were told that the kitchen was understaffed. This did not impact the table next to us who got served quickly PLUS this is not our problem. If it was an issue we should have been notified as we came in to the pub giving us the option to go somewhere else for food. Other than the burgers that were not charged because they were inedible, no comp was suggested or offered. For an experience so poor of service (though friendly), timings and food quality I would have expected all meals, excluding drinks, to be free of charge. I have eaten at the pub for years and in general it is good. Probably not again, mainly in light of not responding to the email I shared directly with them and they did not have the courtesy to reply.More

Our first Sunday lunch out for a long time and we were really disappointed. We waited 10 mins to be seated. After 30 mins of waiting for the menu and drinks we went to the bar and asked. We then waited 1:15 for our food...to arrive at the table. The steak pie was awful and we could barely eat it as there was far too much pepper in it. So we paid £97 for a lunch that we barely eat! The mash was good! Another table was in the same position and just left and refused to pay their bill. I couldn’t do that but I should have. We didn’t even get a discount. VERY DISAPPOINTED! Will not be returning.More

Chanced on this Pub after a visit to Standen House which is around 4 miles away. Very friendly service, large seating areas both inside & out. Lovely food, not a massive menu but good quality ingredients and piping hot food, would recommend

Had a really lovely stay at the Anchor Inn in Pooh room. The room was clean and beautifully decorated. The complimentary shampoo, conditioner and soap is also a very lovely touch. Will definitely stay here again and that is also due to the excellent service...we received from the manager. Made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. The food was also lovely, we had two vegan burgers.More

The worst pub meal I've had in a very long time. Vegan burger - £15. I'm not vegan, I just fancied a change. 8 chunky chips & the alternative to coleslaw was half a sliced red pepper. The burger was virtually black, the tomato had...seen much better days & the whole meal was cold other than the chips. Other customers were chasing food up after 45 minutes & the pub was not busy. Kids throwing stones at people in the garden. An utter shambles & we won't be back.More

Fantastic menu. My two friends and I loved all our dishes. Proper restaurant food, not usual pub grub. Great choice of venison dishes, excellent steak and ale pie and lovely entrees and desserts.

After booking a table for 16 guests for 1pm on sunday 27th (this was a lengthy conversation regarding how many people and that we wanted to sit outside etc...) we turned up for 1pm after a half hour walk to be told that 'we weren't...on their system' and the 'manager' couldn't care less he did not want to accommodate us although the pub was extremely quiet. There was no way he would even consider helping us. We will NOT be returning. We walked to a nearby pub called the Gallipot Inn and were welcomed in where we received great food and service. The total bill came to around £500 which the anchor missed out on!More

Having booked a table for 15 of us two days before, we walked half an hour to have our Sunday lunch and were told that our booking hadn’t been taken and they weren’t able to feed us. This was despite the pub and garden being...half empty. The manager didn’t seem to care less. Luckily we managed to find a pub down the road, The Gallipot, who were amazing. Will never be returning to The Anchor.More
