5 star service every time

Love, love, love it here. I have a monthly property networking group and we hold it here and have done since January, the owners and team are so welcoming, the food is always brilliant and is the only place I go for curry in Chelmsford now. 5 star service every time. Can not recommend more.

Fabulous meal, great staff

Fantastic. I precooked the Kurzi- leg of lamb cooked for 8 hours. It did not disappoint and was delicious. The whole meal was a feast for a special occasion They looked after us and were attentive, especially with the food needs for a guest. Great meal, lovely staff and always a good experience

Order a takeaway for me and the partner after being recommended by friends. Had a wait of 50 mins but was well worth-it as Food was hot and tasted great . Id recommend the bangla patiala in lamb full of fantastic flavour .

Not the best…

The restaurant itself is a bit dated but we’re all about the food, and the reviews looked positive, so gave it a try. The food was ok-ish. The starters were fine. The chicken dish was very unusual in its presentation - we’ve ordered the same dish countless times before in various restaurants and it bore little relation to what we expected. The chicken was also fairly tasteless. The lamb dish was actually unpleasant with very chewy, gristly, over-cooked meat. The meal was not overly expensive but, sorry to say, we won’t be returning.

Great little gem of a restaurant, can’t fault it

This is the best Indian we’ve had in a really long time. I’ve been in Chelmsford forever and I’m gutted I’m only just discovering it now!! All the dishes were really tasty, hot and the service was attentive, friendly and relaxed. It’s a family run place and you can tell they take great pride in the food and the restaurant. 100% would recommend

Had takeaway from here for my other half’s birthday last night (we have also eaten in house a few times too) the food is always superb. Sometimes when you order a takeaway from a restaurant you like you can be left feeling disappointed as it doesn’t always live up to the in house food. Not in this instance at all, the takeaway food lives up to expectations, and as always big portions with lots of flavour.

I have started to review restaurants in the same way as I review films on IMDB, I start off with high expectations and then start to reluctantly remove stars. I find this is a good way to provide a more comprehensive review. So: Booking online. Quick and hassle free with a call back to confirm. Still five stars. Greeting: Excellent, we were led to a clean well presented table. Still five stars. Atmosphere: Really friendly with a contemporary feel, very clean with relaxing décor. The seating was comfortable and well spaced out. Still five stars. Staff: Couldn’t fault them. Friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable and charming with a sense that they really enjoyed being there. Still five stars. Food: Now we come to the real review. This is not a restaurant that caters for the macho red faced ‘as hot as they can bare’ clientele. The food was delicately spiced and well presented. We had the Chicken Shaslik with the usual accompaniments, and I have to be honest, my wife and I agree it was the best we’ve ever had. We are both lovers of Indian cuisine and have eaten in Indian establishments literally all over the South East and as far as Cornwall. We know what it should taste like, but this was another level. The chef clearly understands their spices. It was mouth-wateringly delicious and the chicken so tender it melted in the mouth. The Naan's are to die for, we had them put ours in a doggy bag to take home, the first time we've ever asked for that. Still five stars but I wish I could give them more. Facilities. I never used them so cannot say. Conclusion: If you want a delicious well spiced and well balanced meal without the need for gallons of yoghurt to stop the burning, the Rose of India is your you and it will now be our ‘Go to’ for a really delicious meal.

Excellent food, excellent service

Excellent food, excellent service. The best Indian food I’ve ever had. Whole family really enjoyed the food. Particularly the lamb and naan bread stood out as astonishing. Myself, not even a massive lover of Indian, absolutely loved it and came out full and satisfied. We probably went at the busiest time, middle of December, Saturday night - but the service was still very good and the waiters are lovely and very polite. The only negative would be it is quite loud in there as it was very busy so we had to raise our voices a lot to speak, however I think this was due to the fact there were a lot of Xmas parties ect.

Takeaway review

Takeaway! Religiously order here but tonight the food we collected was cold , and the lids not on properly! The currys have the sauce and the naan bread flat and hard. Absolutely AWFUL sorry to say but not on having cold food when we waited over an hour!

Simply fabulous!

As serial Indian restaurant lovers and curry eaters, we have visited many restaurants in London and elsewhere over three decades plus. This is absolutely up there at the top - not just for Chelmsford but anywhere. Stunning food with layered flavours, hot but not belting - heat with subtlety and without that cloying richness that often makes Indian food hard to finish regardless of flavour. So if the food is great, it is equalled by superlative service, attentive but not intrusive with superb attention to detail by the ringmaster Jay ensuring everything runs smoothly. Simply wonderful. We will be back!

I have been to various Indian restaurants in the Chelmsford area over the years. I have never had any reason to complain about the food but the level of service and the general quality of the experience has varied widely across establishments. I have been a regular at the Rose of India with my wife and family members for some years, going back to the days of Zeera. For me the Rose of India is the best Indian restaurant that I have ever experienced. And my experience includes India. I am quite an old bloke now, despite my youthful appearance. If I go out to eat, I want to enjoy the food but the service, comfort and general ambience of the restaurant are increasingly important to me. Fast food isn’t for me. I don’t want a curry in a hurry. I would prefer to relax and feel comfortable in my surroundings. This is where the Rose of India excels. The quality of food and the range of the menu are excellent and so are the non-food factors. Spending time there is like stepping back to the age of elegance, with friendly and attentive service, a calm, relaxed atmosphere and comfortable facilities. I have always found this restaurant to be consistently very good but there is no doubt that it has improved significantly under the current management regime. In my opinion they have gone from Zeera to heroes.

Favourite Curry in Chelmsford

The Rose is one of our favourite Indians restaurant, the food and service is always good. If you would like your dish a little hotter or not so spicy then ask them, they can adjust any dish to your liking. The quality of the produce is exceptional, I have never had a chewy piece of Lamb and it always melts in your mouth.

Best Indian restaurant ever. Food is full of flavour.

I have eaten in many Indian restaurants, but this place has won me over. The food is full of flavour and well proportioned. I can highly recommend the Pepper Lamb starter. I have visited many time since my first visit, yet always treated with the same respect that I have witness every guess receive. They are able to cater for the single person or any large party. The staff are friendly and always willing to assist whenever they can.

Disappointing takeaway.

Takeaway as restaurant full. Garlic nans are very small and not the nicest , bit flat and hard rather than pillowy. Rice was fine, popadoms fine too. sag paneer was really poor thin and watery one of the worst I have had. chicken tikka moist and good chunks, tarkha dhal was pleasant but bit bland , my tandoori chicken curry was ok but bland and lacked depth. Overall alright but it was expensive and don’t think we would order again.

Worst Indian meal ever

This is the fifth time I’ve tried to post a review of my family’s visit to the Rose. I shan’t bother writing it in full all over again because there’s every chance the restaurant will have it removed again. Sadly, they don’t appear to be interested in addressing any of the criticism (as I’ve seen on one negative review) but just want it shut down. To summarise, my daughter’s birthday meal, which she’d been looking forward to for months, was ruined by appalling food, some of which had clearly been reheated (crunchy, dried-out rice anyone?). I would strongly advise anyone thinking of getting food from there to think again and if you’re after a takeaway, I can highly recommend Bombay Cuisine. If you’re eating out, you’re better off heading up to Ilford for even into London since Indian Night turned into a takeaway only.
