Came here with my boyfriend on a Sunday night, the staff were very friendly and approachable and always asked if we needed anything! We ordered the beef sunday roast and was so impressed with it, it was extremely good value for money and it was full of taste and flavour. The waiters made us feel welcome and provided an efficient service, despite the coronavirus situation. Nice atmosphere too! Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of feeling abit rushed towards the end of the meal. But would highly recommend!

Fabulous long overdue catch-up with friends. Front of house was amazing really helpful to both those that had booked and trying to accommodate those that hadn’t. All social distancing and COVID rules adhered to. We were asked to order through the app which was easy & efficient, with both drinks and food being served promptly by lovely waiting staff on a very busy night. Food was piping hot, tasty and very reasonably priced. Well done The Waterside, it’s good to be back!

Just had our 4th visit and once again the food was delicious. In summer we say outside watching all the activity on the canal whilst enjoying a platter of cold meats, breads and olives. In Autumn we sat in the new conservatory area, again overlooking the canal. Last Sunday we were welcomed inside where we enjoyed tasty chicken fajitas and salt and pepper chicken. Service is always friendly. We will be back!

15 years or so ago, I discovered a fantastic restaurant in Swinton called ‘Cromptons’.The food, service and atmosphere was brilliant but after a couple of years, it closed. So when my daughter organised her birthday meal for 20 diners at Cromptons at the Waterside, I had no hesitation and looked forward to it. Sadly, my meal wasn’t up to expectations ! I had the Black Pudding and Bacon Fritter to start and the Ultimate Burger as my main ..... both were over cooked. The Fritter was dry and tasteless. My main, Ultimate Burger was a disaster, every element dry and over cooked ....... the butter-flyed chicken breast was as hard as the sole of my shoe, the layer of melted cheese was like rubber, the slice of back bacon was stiff and dry and the burger pattie was dry over cooked and tasteless. Sadly, I shall not return nor will I recommend the restaurant to anybody. On top of this, the price of drinks at the bar was extortionate, more in keeping with London pricing. I give you a very sympathetic 3/10, must try harder !

Hi Michael Thanks for your review albeit not a glowing one as we would like. Having read it, I would sincerely hope that you did raise this with a member of staff as we would have most definatley of exchanged your meal if you wasn't happy with it, its always very hard to rectify situations once customers have left the restaurant and took to social media to express their feelings, notwithstanding that, we do strive to achieve 100% customer satisfaction and in that we would very much like for you to return if you would kindly change your mind and enjoy a starter & main on us to show you that sometimes we may make the odd mistake, but thankfully this is a rare occasion as plenty of other reviewers state. Your comments regarding London prices isnt a true reflection Im afraid as we constantly check our prices against the other local establishments and we still are under £5.00 for premium beers unlike others close by, so sadly we cannot agree on this item. Trusting we do see you again in the near future.

We came as part of the eat out to help out scheme, I first want to say all the staff we met were lovely and they deserve an extra star alone , the bottle of wine an ordinary white was £ 17/95 and think a house wine should probably cost £13 at the most ( this is not fine dining) . We ordered the Steak and ale pie which was served piping hot but far to salty and tasteless, the hand cut ? Chips had an odd taste . The desert okay but the main very disappeointing,,no one asked why there was so much food left on the plates . It’s a shame the setting is very nice on the waters edge ,but not really impressed with the food . I wish one of the four of us had ordered something else to give a more rounded review.

Hi Doreen, its with regret to read that you didn't enjoy your time here with us. As many of or past reviews state, we do with our utmost try our very best to make sure that every customer leaves fully satisfied from all aspects of their time here with us, but sadly it appears that on this occasion, we havent met your expectations. With regards to the cost of the wine, we have compiled an extensive wine list sourced from a very well respected local supplier and whilst we agree we are not a fine dining restaurant as you state, we do feel that far too many other establishments offer a very mediocre wine list which is not something we would do, incidentally, this genuinely is the first negative comment we have received since we went with this new list but in any case totally respect your comments. We do sincerely hope that this does not jeopardize any future visits back here with us and look forward to serving you again soon.

Booked to have a nice meal with family for a birthday celebration .I have fillet steak regularly and as it’s one of the most expensive items on the menu in many restaurants take note of the portion size .At Cromptons the price rises as you have to order veg separate and chips separate which would take the meal to £30 .This is in fact the same price as San Carlo in city centre Manchester ! And that’s award winning Italian dining ! The steak on arrival was just a little bigger than an egg size and on mentioning this the Maitre de explained it was due to the steak shrinking on being cooked .I would not be rude and challenge further but knew this was untrue .It was the fact the steaks were tiny in the first place .!!!They should be 8 or. 9 oz at that price not tiny shrunken 7 oz steaks .Very poor value so advise do-not order fillet steaks as trying to cut back on portion size .I ended up having to eat at home after the meal not a great birthday meal and wouldn’t be returning. The waiting staff were great snd also had to wait nearly an hour as we didn’t order starters !

Good evening, Thank you for your feedback. We always welcome constructive criticism, We take both negative or positive feedback seriously So thank you for taking the time to do this. We have not had any other complaints regarding the steaks but we will keep any eye out now. We love San Carlo too, think it is a little pricey than here though. Although we have not been post lockdown so maybe this has changed. thanks again for taking the time Best regards Jo Morgan

I have previously written a glowing review of this restaurant but our 6th visit last night was very disappointing. We had looked at the new evening menu before we booked ( introduced last October I think) but the menu we were given on arrival was massively reduced and quite different. We queried this to be told its due to Covid. We did actually visit last year as part of the eat out to help out scheme and the menu was much better then. Last night I ordered the flat bread with dips. The hummus was delicious but the guacamole was tasteless and the sour cream did not go well with warm flatbreads. My husband found the pastry on his pork pie starter very dry. We didn't feel the need to complain as this was just the starter and I felt it was my personal opinion that sour cream and guacamole didn't really go well with the flatbreads. However our main courses were disappointing as well. My husband's burger was very dry and tough and the seasonal vegetables accompanying my sea bream was a piece of burnt cabbage and the Jersey New potatoes were actually about 6 tiny cubes of potato. We ate our meals but asked that the chef be given our feedback about the burger and asked for the bill. We then had to wait over 20 minutes for the bill to arrive and when nobody came to take payment, we had to go to the till ourselves to pay.

Hello there, Thank you for taking the time to do this review. We always want to receive feedback, good or bad this is important to us. So sorry you were disappointed with your visit. it is a shame this was not raised on the day with the General Manager or owner as we never ever like people leaving unhappy, thankfully this is not something we have to deal with very often. We hope you do visit again, just to let you know we are very soon, in fact in a week on to the new winter menu which is a little more like we were pre covid. Thanks again Jo Morgan

We booked a table for our family meal following a recent visit and recommendation from one of our diners, but unfortunately this visit did not live up to expectations. The main issue being service which on a not so busy night was slow and had to be chased for salt and pepper, a steak knife and extra drinks. Not sure why this was the case as there seemed to be enough staff throughout the restaurant. The menu is extensive, but possibly too much so as some of our family did find there meals to be very good but a couple of our group felt the food was only average. All that said, I do think that we will give Crompton 's another go before too long as it has a good location, contemporary setting and does always seem to be busy so they are obviously doing something right and maybe we were just unlucky on the night.

Booked in for 6.00pm hoping to have a Sunday roast, however due to being very busy we were told only chicken and lamb shank available. We ordered off the main menu, I selected mussels to start, ok ish, my wife ordered pate which was lovely. The mussels should have been served with a crusty ‘loaf’, I had to ask for that. The main I ordered was lamb loin with seasonal veg wife requested Dover sole. Waiting for almost 1.5 hours for service. Very disappointing as lamb was just a stew served with boiled rice which seemed strange. I asked where the veg was and they brought out a tray of boiled unseasoned cauliflower, carrot and broccoli. Not nice at all. Normally great but was disappointed today

Good evening, Thank you for taking the time to do this review. We rarely have bad feedback however we do take any constructive criticism from any feedback we receive. We were particularly busy yesterday, although we are usually very busy most days, more than usual yesterday, unfortunately with the ongoing Covid restrictions we had two kitchen staff off which did cause us delays. Sorry you felt the Lamb loin was strange, I actually spoke to you myself, we have sold out of this every day it has been on as a specials menu , but obviously you were expecting something different. The lemon sole has also been a very good seller. So sorry your were disappointed we aim to please and majority of the time we hit jackpot on that, sad to hear we did not on this occasion. Me and my friend visited this restaurant on 13.5.21. I ordered through the app and requested alternative milk in my latter and no olives on my salad which none of these were adhered too. When my salad arrived and I began eating it I noticed a short black curly hair within the tuna which resembled a pubic hair. This instantly made me feel physically sick. I immediately informed the waiter who took my plate away and just said sorry. There was no empathy or remorse in this apology. The waiter returned and asked if I would like another dish which I refused due to feeling sick and asked for a full refund. I paid a total amount of £15.85 on my card through the app. In return I got £11.95 in cash. The salad in total cost £12.95, therefore I was short changed by £1 and paid for the coffee which I am sure did not have my request of alternative milk in. I did not raise this with the staff as I did not want to make scene with other customers present. The manager of the restaurant walked past my table 2-3 times while I was sat with nothing in front of me whilst my friend finished her meal which she did not enjoy as she was looking for hairs and the manager did not come over once and apology or even offer me a complimentary drink. This was my first time visiting the restaurant and I certainly would NEVER return due to the poor customer service and extremely poor hygiene in the kitchen and within the food. I would not recommend anyone to attend this restaurant!!!!

Thank you for your first ever Tripadvior repeated review as this is a direct copy and paste from Facebook of which we answered and doubtless more to follow. Its such a shame that people like yourself feel the need to jump immediately to social media review sites instead of using the power of verbal speech. You mention that the manager walked past you 2-3 times, surely it would have been easier and the right thing to do to request his attention and to raise your concerns directly with him rather that airing your views sat behind a keyboard or on a phone, however you state you felt it best "not to raise it with the staff". Clearly you have no idea how hard it has been been for the hospitality industry over the past year, literally hundreds of small bars & restaurants cannot reopen and they have lost everything and to those who have survived which we thankfully are one of those, it is very unknown territory ahead so it is very upsetting when we receive such damming reviews like yours which as we all know could have been dealt with at the table ultimately satisfying you that we have done all we can to make amends so far as reasonably possible , its reviews like this that can break a business, however, thankfully on balance, we have a glowing overall review score and indeed securing our certificate of excellence. For the record we take EVERY review seriously whether good, bad or indifferent and our ultimate goal is achieve 100% customer satisfaction at all times. With reference to the alleged 'black pubic hair' and that coming from our kitchen that has 'extremely poor hygiene' we would like to state that not one of our kitchen staff have black hair and it is very dangerous statement to make without any proof. With regards to you being overcharged, again this is something that we would have been able to deal with at the table had you raised it then, very difficult to do afterwards as we have no record of this. Trusting you and your friend find a restaurant that you can eat together at the same time and that you enjoy in the future as clearly we are not going to be seeing you again which is a pity as like aforementioned, it is our aim to make sure every client leaves on a positive.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon for Sunday lunch after booking online. The venue was nicely presented and we were shown to a small area of 4 tables that were all empty when we arrived but quickly filled up. We shared a starter of baked camembert which was nice enough but a little on the cool side. We had roast beef and a trio roast for mains and unfortunately this is where it went downhill. The meat was from a packet rather than a roasted joint and the potatoes and veg had been over microwaved. I decided against eating my main and this was shortly after removed by a helper waiter who was very apologetic. A shame as the reviews were hopeful but unfortunately not a high standard to match.

Good evening Thank you for taking the time to pop a review on to Trip Advisor for us. Firstly we would like to apologise for your disappointment, we never like to hear anyone has left unhappy however we do disagree with you regarding the roast beef, as all our joints are cooked in our combination ovens and certainly not from a packet as you stated. (More than happy to share our Butchers invoice as evidential proof of this if you would mind providing an email address) We do have an amazing following on a Sunday and do not ever have any bad reviews, again so sorry you were unhappy. We as a family run restaurant strive to make our customers happy It is a shame you did not speak to someone whilst you were here, we always would want to deal with any issue we may be able to correct on the day. We are unable to fix anything when anyone unhappy has left Thank you for your time as we always we would take anything constructive from any bad review very seriously, we would never want this to happen again regards Jo Morgan

This was a last minute decision to try the Waterside in Monton. We haven't visited the restaurant for some time so we thought we'd give it another try. The first wonderful surprise was that we were greeted by Dave, who used to own Smith's in Eccles. This was great as we've always liked his manner with customers and how he makes people feel special. The second surprise was the place we chose to eat (conservatory??), which was warm and welcoming on a chilly evening, with lots of space around the tables. Also the outlook onto the canal with its reflections and lights made us feel we were somewhere special. The food was delicious, especially the steak & ale pie which would have easily fed two people!. We were well looked after and thoroughly enjoyed our evening. We shall definitely be going again!!

Hi and thanks you very much for your kind words. With regards to Dave we too was delighted when he accepted our offer to come and join us, he has a great following and is loved by plenty of locals here and has very quickly settled in with the team albeit the odd low beam is causing a head height issue for his 6 foot something frame !!! Thanks also for your lovely comments of our new extension which we have christened the 'Lighthouse Lounge' for obvious reasons. It really has added another level to the restaurant as we are so pleased with the end result and have had some amazing feedback from everybody who dines in there. We hope to be of service to you again very soon in the near future.

Had a great Sunday lunch at the waterside. Not been for a while and it was nice to see they have completed the extension at the front giving them loads more tables which were all full. The place was busy but everything seemed calm and you waited for nothing. Drinks came promptly, food order was taken when we had decided. 3 of us had the lamb shank (amazing) daughter had trio roast(also amazing) plenty of vegetables to share and big homemade Yorkshire puddings on each plate. Great food great service and not overpriced. Won't be leaving it so long before we return next time.

I couldn't wait for the restaurants to re-open. This was top of my list for a Sunday roast & I wasn't disappointed. The lamb shank was to die for & a generous portion. I swapped the mash for roasties, because they are also always cooked to perfection. The staff are very friendly, attentive ,& hard working The location is so relaxing, right on the canal & there is a lot of outside seating if you just want to stop by for a drink or a light bite. Its family & dog friendly.

Despite the persistent wind & rain during our outdoor dining experience, the food was delicious & very fairly priced for the quality & quantity you get. The most memorable & important part of our meal though, was the staff. Although cold & wet, catching parasols flying off the tables & trying to keep the gazebo steady; all the staff were smiley, chatty & friendly. We will definitely be going back, whatever the weather
