Pleasant atmosphere, polite and friendly staff but disappointing and quite expensive meal. The two men in our group chose the mackerel fillets as starters. They were tiny! Possibly fine as part of a 7 course 'tasting menu' but literally 'two mouthful' size. Other starters of duck terrine and smoked salmon with egg, were plentiful (normal size). Next came the main... We've been here a few times and it has never disappointed. Firstly, what a building! Plenty of character, and history just oozes from it. You'll need to mind your head on the ceiling - a rare treat for us vertically challenged folk! The menu is always challenging too. By that I mean the chefs really like to explore unusual ingredients... More

Friendly efficient service in a very busy environment. Food a bit ordinary and so-called signature dish of battered haddock and trice cooked chips was nothing to get excited about. Good selection of beers.

Visited for the first time recently for a friend's birthday after being recommended many times. All I have to say is I wish I had been here sooner! This is a great pub with lots of character and a great menu. There were four of us and three of us had starters, I had the Mackerel which was excellent and... More

Had our mother's 80th birthday lunch for 17 in the function room at The Anchor Inn and had excellent service from start to finish. Thank you to all the staff that made our special celebrations a very special occasion. The food was superb too. Would highly recommend this pub.

Probably as a result of being so successful that service has suffered! The food was really good and they did make an effort to squeeze eight of us for lunch in the bar at short notice. However it was the holiday season and the service was lacking probably due to not enough staff. We did get served by very friendly... More

Third time in a year - it must be good. In truth family live nearby and it is easily their favourite (and ours too when in the area). They have a young (perfectly behaved) baby who is always accommodated without any drama - the young staff here seem phased by little. The other mature clientele - probably younger than us... More

Stopped for lunch whilst travelling to Bournemouth via the A3. The pub is very old with open fire and log beams. There was a good variety of real ale and menu items and the food was well cooked and presented. The walls are full of WW1 memorabelia, I could have spent an hour just perusing the photos. Very interesting artwork... More

I am surprised there are some mixed reviews here. We were a table to 5 and the food was absolutely first class. The celeriac soup was rich, and had a depth of flavour which can only be achieved by a long reducing period. The venison pie, all homemade - was one the best pies I have ever had in any... More

We attended a wedding and reception at the pub. The location is lovely and the pub itself is gorgeous both inside and out. Very atmospheric. We did find the food disappointing - small portions and not anything special. I'd recommend ordering lots if you have any big hungry men in your party. The piped music was also quite loud at...
