A friend of mine treated me to Sunday lunch at the Hen & Chicken on the 9th Jan 2022. The carvery was shocking to say the least. I didn't say anything because I didn't want her to be upset, but she beat me to it....The food was cold, the veg was only fit for the swill bin, stuffing balls harder than musket ball, and you needed a stanley knife to cut the meat. 0/10More

What more could you want from a top pub? Jolly good menu, beer kept really well plus a most excellent carvery and a proper pizza oven. The staff are helpful and charming. A group of some 10 of us booked for our pre-Christmas lunch at...this charming, character filled roadside pub. The place has a lovely, warm atmosphere. The beer is well kept and there is a jolly good selection of wines by the glass. Our food was not only excellent but also very reasonably priced. I highly recommend the carvery. Ham, beef or turkey. Plenty of choice of fresh vegetables, cooked exactly right (certainly not overcooked) and the meat still moist and flavourful. Highly recommended. I would certainly go again.More

Popped in on the way back from Winchester, very welcoming, lovely cosy atmosphere. Had a roast dinner from the carvery, the food was excellent. I can't find anything to fault.

Half pint of Moretti... £3.10... Yes you read that right... £3.10 for a ½ pint of lager. I queried it and they confirmed it's correct. You're closer to London than Alton by 3 miles, but unfortunately you're 42 miles short of being next door to...the Dorchester Hotel, where I'm sure you could happily enjoy a half of lager for £3.10 served to your table on a silver tray.More

Almost £30 for two very small and very mediocre take away pizzas. Don't waste your money here! Even Domino's is better value.

Understandably because of the current Covid situation then self survey is not currently available. Still an excellent menu which includes two roasts. Good value for money friendly and efficient service and plenty of car parking. Very busy so booking is probably essential

The Hen and Chicken used to be our favourite place years ago when it was just a little pub. Then it became a carvery, and probably part of a chain, and it was pretty much carvery or nothing. We felt it had gone downhill so...we haven’t been for years. We tried it again today and it was lovely. Although it’s not the little pub it was, it still has great atmosphere and the food was really good. The waitress, Megan, enhanced the experience with her friendly chat. We had a lovely time and will return and bring our friends.More

It has been a long time since we have had a meal in the Hen & Chicken. The old Pub and restaurant are the same, (which is good) but the standard of food is in a different class. We were in a small party and...all thoroughly enjoyed their meal. It is a drive out of Alton which will restrict visits but it will certainly be a place to eat again there. Service was good and the staff efficient and friendly.More

Called in on our way back from Devon. OMG! The food was amazing. I have calves liver and my husband had steak. Both cooked to perfection. Thoroughly recomment

Warmly welcomed on what was a desperately quiet Monday evening. Spacious pub with loads of seating and friendly staff. A couple of the real ales were unavailable but even so there was a decent choice of beer. Food was pretty good, particularly the starter.
