The atmosphere and service was perfect.
The food was good but not up to the standards it should be for what you pay. Meat had fat and lamb portions were small. Just had two small medallion with fat on edges so made then even smaller. Would have been happy with three. Also very short on vegetables served with meal and potatoes so side veg were ordered, still veg were not impressive!
Must add chips were lovely!

Thank you for your review and your 3 stars. We’re disappointed to hear you say that the food doesn’t live up to the standard that you pay for. Does our perfect service and atmosphere come for free? We offer a package of great ambience, great service and great food, all reflected in our prices, which we believe are fair.
The lamb rump is our best selling dish is and is always well received. We're sorry if you felt the portions were small and not of good value but are pleased you loved the chips.

The Trooper. I must admit they have updated the place well, all very pleasant and the staff are very attentive.
Ask a question and they know their stuff.
I popped in for brunch, really nice coffee and what I saw of the other people's food it looked good and properly cooked.
I had a bacon bun very nice but a bit stingy on the bacon for £8 three pieces would have been better than two, it would have felt like a bacon bun then.

Visited the new & beautiful “Trooper” after its revamp, the pub is absolutely lovely & gardens are too, really lovely. The drinks are great & good wines & beer options etc.
We also ate there which is where my opinion changes. The menu is very complicated to understand as it says BBQ but not a lot of meat on the menu, I think they had a BBQ earlier in the day but wasn’t clear. The food is very fussy & fancy. We ordered all of the bites & the noci. The presentation was beautiful & food was ok. It was fair too fancy for pub food which was disappointing. They could potentially put people off with their food choices as it’s not what you would choose for pub grub. To fine.
So personally I would definitely 💯 visit for drinks & crisps but not for the food.
To improve I would add even some kind of chips, wedges, halloumi style bites & keep it a little more simple.
But 100% visit for drinks as it’s really pretty.

Incredibly slow and disinterested staff. We were pushed to order, given the wrong menus and when we did the starter took 20 mins which was fine but we had to keep chasing for drinks.
The mains then took 1.5 hours to then arrive. We asked 3x and were told once they were being plated up, a lie, as they arrived 20 mins later.
Food was very average, beef was a small portion, cold and had to go back with no real apology. No sauce for chicken which was very dry, except more beef gravy.
We gave no tip and got a foul look but it shouldn’t have been a surprise. No effort to compensate for the pretty miserable experience.

First time at The Trooper and popped in without booking, they were so kind and accommodating as even though the restaurant was full they were still able to fit us in! We're so grateful that they did, because we had such a wonderful experience, they seated us outside amid a beautiful setting, fantastic décor, gorgeous planting, luxurious seating with lovely comfy cushions, tables nicely spaced and added to all this a wonderful ambiance! We truly were looked after and catered for to the finest degree, their attention to detail to ensure you're happy and comfortable is highly commendable. The food was like fine dining, at a very high standard, just out of this world, we had the vegetarian and meat roast dinners which were delectable, beautifully presented on the plate and by far for us the best roast dinner in Beds and Bucks. To sum it up, if you're looking for that extra special unique experience this is the restaurant to visit, you will not be disappointed!

Excellent quality of food with great service.
This was our first visit but it certainly won't be the last.
The only tiny recommendation I'd make is that the scallop and black pudding starter could do with more scallop at this price (£16) but the flavour was sublime!

Has a fantastic lunch at The Trooper, first visit but will definitely be back. The crispy Korean-style cauliflower bites on the light snacks menu are ridiculously good. Absolutely amazing. The venison with beetroot and mushrooms, the nicest I’ve ever had and the desserts were incredible. Rice pudding with a lightly brûléed top, blood orange sorbet, Cointreau and orange segments was stupidly good.
We’ve eaten at the Hand & Flowers in Marlow a few times and The Trooper was easily on a par and about 40% cheaper.
We will be back soon, highly recommended!

To be honest my friend and I went to The Greyhound first but they had no available tables in their very small dog friendly bar. Our second choice was The Trooper, who gave us, and my friend's golden retriever, an incredibly warm welcome. My friend and I both had the steak from the 2/3 course menu and it was a-maz-ing. As for the chips.....................they have to be the best in the whole country! Our waiter/barman was attentive and so very helpful - all in all an extremely enjoyable lunchtime experience. There is absolutely no doubt we will be returning, and probably very soon. Thank you Trooper!

Arrived early and Andrew gave us a lovely table by the wood burner to enjoy a great pint of draught Tring Sidepocket.
We were a three and were very well looked after by Sophie. We all had different starters. All were excellent (scallops, chicken terrine and smoked) followed by 3 x of Jermaine’s delicious roast beef with all the usual trimmings (but please please please Jermaine, put the recipe for the cauliflower cheese croquet on Insta. It was unbelievably delicious)
And then the pudd. Delicious Bakewell tart washed down with lovely pudding wine.
The food was so good that we really can’t wait to come and see you all again soon. Thanks to Jermaine, Andrew, William and Sophie. See you in 2025.

It was a relaxing experience having lunch in the pub, sitting in a room with history/character and attractive decor. and quiet, unobtrusive music playing in the background. Service from James was attentive, but never overbearing. I felt comfortable eating there alone.
I particularly enjoyed the hispi cabbage vegetarian main dish. It was light and very tasty, so there was room for dessert! The price was reasonable for the quality of the food, which was cooked to order (I think), so don't be in a rush.
All the other diners also praised the food. I heard one diner remark that the dishes might have weird and wonderful names (which don't mean much to the uninitiated, me included), but that the food is so very tasty and the quality is great.

I was at the location for a job of work with an oversized vehicle. Andrew and Rupert were very accommodating regarding parking and the ham, egg and chips that they served was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The ham was diced and made into ham cakes with the assistance of honey glaze and mustard - outstanding!!!
Great food, awesome service, outstanding pub. Well done guys, and absolute pleasure meeting you all 👍🏼

We thoroughly enjoyed the exceptionally tasty food and warm friendly service in such a beautiful pub. Equalling any fine dining restaurant for flavour, exciting use of fresh ingredients, quality of dishes, presentation, and ample quantity. The drinks menu is also exceptional for a pub, and we are also so glad that we had the best puddings ever! You certainly get what you pay for; quality here is way above your standard pub lunch. No wonder the pub was bustling on a cold wet February lunchtime. We will definitely travel the several miles again to be back for more very soon - thank you.

This is a cracking pub restaurant in a beautiful quintessentially English village. The pub and gardens are immaculate and a fantastic venue on a summers day - which it was. The draught cider is good and my wife had the fish goujon sandwich which was very big and was served with a very fresh salad, fries and tartare sauce. 1010 and Andy and the staff deliver good old fashioned service in a relaxed manner. Recommended to visit

We had a wonderful Sunday lunch at the Trooper. The starters were insanely good and the roast beef to follow ticked all the boxes of a perfect Sunday spent with family. The service was also expertly conducted by a smiley and professional team. Highly recommend!

We went to The Trooper for a Sunday lunch with the whole family. Often pub Sunday lunches disappoint - The Trooper excelled! Everything was cooked perfectly, lovely pink beef and Yorkshire puddings with braised ox cheek inside 👍. We were a party of 8 and no one complained of the food.
The service was great, professional and with a smile.
The new team there are certainly raising the standard of country pub restaurants.
We will go back!!
