The New Inn - Fownhope
Review
About
One of the few remaining traditional pubs within the heart of Herefordshire. This friendly country pub has been run for over 50 years within the same family and is still going strong. The New Inn is much appreciated by its locals for its range of real ales and warm atmosphere. A pub for all seasons, it has a welcoming interior with log burner and a large lawned garden area for outdoor refreshments. Good beer and homemade food is at the heart of the operation! Rambling parties welcome, local routes to be taken.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The New Inn never fails to please for great food, lovely service and fantastic value. It’s a real local pub if you want to pop in for a pint but also with delicious honest pub food. A relatively limited menu indicates that this food is real-not plucked out of a packet-but we always find meals to enjoy. A rump steak with all the trimmings arrived cooked to perfection and cost around £15. A real steak pie with gravy and veg was also delicious. There are fun monthly charity quizzes which fill the pub. Highly recommend whether you’re a holiday maker looking for a great meal out or a local

The team at the New Inn are amazing. They have been cooking and delivering lunches to my elderly mother in the village since the pandemic and beyond. Before that my parents used to eat regularly at the pub and have always enjoyed the food. What a lovely welcoming and helpful group of people, headed by the wonderful Sandra. What would we do without you. M

Lovely service and delicious plentiful food in this dog friendly traditional village inn. No fuss or frills just a great pint and great food. We went on a Sunday so had Sunday roasts (with vegetarian option) which are freshly cooked and piping hot -with extra gravy if you need it. Roasties, Yorkshires, red cabbage, mashed swede, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower with plenty of meat (or emmental and asparagus en croute) all help to make this a good value place that we’ll definitely go back to. Weekday menu is also recommended.

If you want the right food you ordered as well as it being good, homemade, I suggest you go elsewhere.
I ordered a beef burger with cheese and chips and got a chicken burger with chips. Being takeaway I got home to find this and when I called about the order they said they’d run out of beef burgers but didn’t think to tell me, the customer. £11 for a cheap and nasty burger.

This is our second visit to the New Inn and once again we had a fantastic meal. We both had the roast Beef which was tender and plentiful and was accompanied by a great selection of vegetables, all cooked to perfection.
Thank goodness there are still great pubs like this where you can enjoy great food and drink, served by people who obviously care about what they are doing and provide exceptional value for money.
Well done all at The New Inn, we will be back.

We were travelling to this general area to collect an item and decided to make it worth our while and have lunch whilst out...
Not knowing the area and the pubs it was a gamble that paid off.
The lunch was excellent, freshly cooked and well presented, the amount represented good value for money and was much better and cheaper than the microwave meals you get in some of the larger "chain" owned pubs.
The staff were polite and attentive, all in all a pleasant experience and great food and would certainly visit again if in the area.

My wife and I turned up at the New Inn, whilst doing the Wye Valley Walk, thinking that we had booked accommodation... This turned out not to be the case - due to a computer glitch I'd booked the wrong New Inn and this one doesn't do accommodation. Well, the landlady was extraordinary: first she offered to drive us the 8 miles to the pub that we had booked; on recognising that this would then present us with a problem for the next day's walk, she then phoned around to find us accommodation in the village. All 'above and beyond the call of duty'. Needless to say, we had dinner at the pub - excellent steak and ale pie (made properly with pastry top and bottom); even the beer was great. And to cap it all, the landlady cooked us breakfast in the morning. In short, she turned a bit of a disaster into an exceptionally enjoyable experience - a truly 'good Samaritan' who runs a great pub.
In short, I really could not recommend the New Inn at Fownhope more strongly.

A group of five, we have lunched here several times and all enjoyed a reasonably-priced substantial lunch. All is home and delicious. Friendly service and well-polished restaurant with a good location and garden. The puddings are amazing!

Our baby granddaughter was christened at the village church, so we thought it would be fitting to ask if the landlady would allow us to hold a hot brunch for some guests in this charming pub after the ceremony.
She agreed and it all went very smoothly.
A great few hours were had by all that attended. Delicious food and hot beverages consumed. Thank you so very much Sandra for helping us out& thank you to the lovely female chef that expertly prepared the food.

Visited with family - teenagers to OAP. Staff were friendly, relaxed and nothing was too much trouble. Catered for vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters with tasty home cooked food. Beer choices were local and tasty. A relative lives locally and goes regularly - staff have clearly got to know her and her tastes and requirements well - a great place and an asset to Fownhope. Will return!

Visited twice in two days with friends, once for lunch and the next day for dinner. On the face of it the menu is basic, typical pub fare but was of excellent quality and very reasonably priced.
Our lunch was ploughman’s, very nice especially the ham !
Dinner the next day, all four of us went for the home cooked steak and ale pie with veg and gravy. Delicious 😋 👍
Sandra, whose family has run the pub for generations, was so friendly and attentive and this made our visit all the more enjoyable.
Situated in a lovely village location, we would highly recommend the New Inn and will revisit if in the area in future.

We have been a few times on a Sunday Lunch time, and always been very happy, home cooked food with a lovely welcome. We always know that we can have a tasty meal. Good variety of food available, but can highly recommend the Sunday Lunch.

We visited this weekend as we were staying locally.
Nice staff, lots of space outside to sit with out dogs. Was a little disappointed with the Ploughman’s, was very small for the price (1 slice of bread, 3 slices of ham and some salad/coleslaw) was tasty just wanted a bit more!
Would visit again and would recommend

Lovely country pub with delicious homemade food. Went today for mother's day lunch. On the menu was a mixture of your favourite roasts or there were plenty of alternatives if you didn't want a roast, vegetarian options were also available. Lots of yummy puddings to choose from as well. A cosy, friendly pub with lovely staff and an amazing landlady. I would highly recommend 😊

Came here with my boyfriend over the weekend after a day shopping in Hereford. At first o was sceptical about the prices being so low, didn't think it could be much quality for a low price. But wow! I was proved wrong! Lovely homemade lasagne with thick chunky garlic bread. My boyfriend said the majority cheese was one of the best he'd ever tasted. For dessert i had cheese cake which was beautifully fluffy and creamy! The other half had chocolate brownie which is also gluten free! All our food came quickly and the owner and staff were very attentive! This country pub is a gem in hiding! Will definitely be returning on a regular basis! Many thanks to the team for a wonderful evening!
