It seemed as if Margate was still firmly boarded up and bolted shut for the winter, when we visited from London one sunny February day a few weeks ago. So it took a bit of a wander to find somewhere that a bit more tasty...than bog standard fish and chips by the empty beach, or greasy kebab from the the takeouts that dot Marine Parade.
We tried the cafe at the Turner Contemporary but it didn’t appeal. Thankfully we came across the quirky little cafe called ‘The Greedy Cow Cafe’ on the little Market Place in the Old Town area, opposite the Margate Museum.
The cafe is located in one of the Old Town’s quirky old buildings. The building is a bit olde-worlde wonky. The interior decor is decidedly vintage, quite shabby chic, but very clean and very appealing, especially to the arty-farty crowd. We were greeted warmly, and made our way to the small dining room upstairs, already filling with diners. Seating there is at trestle-style tables; we had a great spot by the window overlooking the little square and the museum. The only seating on the ground floor is outside in the little square.
It’s the food that packs a punch here. The lunch menu is creative, innovative and really interesting. Everything speaks of flavour and freshness; everything oozes care and attention to detail. It’s far from ordinary fare here. There’s a good selection of dishes, including burgers, and a comprehensive menu for children. There’s also quite an exotic breakfast menu. No ‘Full English’ here; think ‘Banana and Pistachio Toastie’ or ‘Bacon and Guacamole Bun’. There’s plenty of options for vegans.
Our meals were the Falafel and Beetroot Hummus, and the Pulled Pork Bun. Both were delicious. The spiced herb falafel was accompanied by rose water harissa, beetroot hummus, and a tomato onion and cucumber salad all on a bed of couscous; it was served with slivers of sourdough. The Pulled Pork dish was a toasted brioche bun filled with succulent roasted shoulder of pork, dressed with homemade BBQ sauce and a celery slaw.
We enjoyed our meals very much. The servings were ample. AtWe’ve certainly put it on our radar, and will revisit as soon as opportunities allow.More
