Although the food was nice 😍 I have to mark this place down on staff - customers service - staff attitude - work ethic. On arrival we asked to eat - table of six. Other family mrmbers were in the bar and we haven't seen...them for over 5 years. They were stopped joining with us if not eating. Stayed we could eat in the bar if we so wished. A lady took our order and told us that we were lucky as they don't do this as the norm. We had our meals and joined our family in the bar. I cleared the table of glasses 3 times, which begs the question what do the staff here ACTUALLY do. Last orders told they were closing but a number of people locals still drinking inside and out. Rude staff which is a shame because the food was nice. Would not return 😕More
I came here today with my partner, mum and a dog. We went into the restaurant. The waiter when he saw we had a dog said we’d have to sit in the bar area which wasn’t an issue. He was perfectly polite. I should say...that the dog is a tiny thing. What I object to is when I went to ask for the menu at the bar. They’re kept in the corner of the bar and I said to the Irish bar lady that I haven’t realised they were there. She then replied with: Like you didn’t realise dogs weren’t allowed in the restaurant. That comment was completely unnecessary and I was taken aback. I held my tongue though. When my partner and I went to order food I told her politely that I thought her comment had been rude. She then started to argue wirh me and told me she’d lived in Whitstable for ten years and there was only one place where dogs can go and eat in a restaurant. That’s not the case. I really think she took me for someone who’d come down from London for the day whereas I actually live twenty minutes away I insisted she had been rude. My partner completed the order while I popped to the loo at which point she went to speak to other staff about me. Totally unprofessional. I have been using the Royal for three years. I’m afraid her attitude spoilt the lunch which to be honest was alright but nothing outstanding. Would I go back? Probably for a drink only but I’d rather not be served by someone who thinks it’s acceptable to pour oil on fire with an unnecessary comment and then who decides they should stand and argue with a customer.More
Birthday treat for my sister. I heard about the Royal by word of mouth and always interested in checking out my friends reviews. Booked online got there just before 12, parked on double yellows as parking is a premium, especially on a nice Bank Holiday....Monday also gives you 3 hours of parking. There is parking on the road by the side of the pub it is 1hr parking and no return for 1 hr good job I had 3 hours. We got shown to the table ordered drinks one being a cocktail. We were given a menu, the menu on the wall said "Not in Use" so I asked are there any specials waiter went to ask the chef who was walking through the restarent, i heard him say yes but only 3 mussels and no Duck breast. The waiter came back with an A5 piece of paper with about 5 on. 1 out the other soon to run out, and as I like Mussels, I ordered them straight off. We both had the Satay chicken wings, very tasty nice sharp dressing on the garnisg only issue the paper under disintegrated under the moisture. understandably, the paper helps the dishwaher if the chefs caramalises the bottom. The main order was the Shredded Duck rice bowl, not the Vegan version, and of course the mussels cooked in cider for me, no fries but with mashed potato, sour dough bread and beer battered onion rings. The food came out nice and hot. The first issue chips came out told them to exchange for the mash I ordered. I also had to ask for a finger bowl and a spoon for any juice. The mash took a little while to come out. The second issue was that the mussels were overcooked, and at least 5% of the shells were broken. But were very tasty. My sister said her duck rice bowl was very nice and tasty and filling. We decided to have a desert and so asked for the menu. 45 minutes later, it arrived. Cheesecake and Lemon meringue tart with a latte. 20-minute deserts arrived 10 minutes later. Latte arrived. We were at opposite the restaurant bar, so it was a good place to view and hear. Someone had ordered a couple of cocktails, and I'm not doing those to busy. Someone complained to the lady in the bar ,the message was on the way to the kitchen, and it looked like one of the chefs by the kitchen entrance said don't, I will deal with it. The restaurant bar was a third full of dirty glasses. the staff stressed. thank heavens, the allowance of one and a half hours for the table was not mentioned. I just made it to the car 5 minutes under the 3 hours. Good food, but don't spoil it by using the mayhem approach. Work to your capability. I am looking forward to coming back with a larger group of family.More
Decent pub in a nice setting on the cliff top, with plenty of space in the dining room. Good beer and well cooked food. The two staff on duty were very friendly and efficient, and the food arrived promptly.
We were two couples, ( locals) we booked a table in the restaurant. I arrived very hungry and looking forward to eating. I ordered my choice, Steak pie and veg and was informed this was no longer available so ordered my 2nd choice of Fish...and Chips, unfortunately this was also no longer available. My third choice was available... yay!!! Pumpkin tortellini but tasted like cardboard. It had no flavour and I found it inedible. I left hungry and dissappointed. Staff were all lovely but wont be eating in the restaurant again.More
First time back this year. Nice to see new menu. Lots of choice and the intended 'I'll be good and have just a main' turned into 3 courses ! The duck rice bowl was really nice and I would definitely have it again. The service...delivered by the the young waitress was really good, so thank you .More
Not for the first time I have a bad experience with the rude waitress at the royal. The last time my friend picked up a comment made about baby’s, which I actually said to her I’m sure she didn’t mean it like that… now I’m...not so sure. This time I had an issue which she took upon herself to make worse. Table of 15, we had 7 roast beef. It was clear my portion was a lot smaller so I questioned it, didn’t overthink it, thought that they would just correct it. Absolutely not the case, told me the chef said £2 for more, what?! It’s already £13.95! I said I clearly have less.. she said no, he put same on all, no he didn’t!! . So she went back- he said no he put 3 on all and he ‘won’t budge’.. no I clearly have 2! Well he said ‘no!! unless you pay more!!, do you want the manager’ yes I do thanks! Manager comes along, lovely guy. Spoke to the chef brought more beef.. even more than needed or expected. I asked what the chefs problem was and he said miscommunication- the waitress had said I wanted more and how much to charge!! After this she didn’t speak to me, come near me or give me eye contact. I’ve heard from others they also have had similar experiences with the staff, as a local it’s a shame as the food is good, but I won’t be back. If it wasn’t for the other staff I would have left as the confrontation put me off eating there. It was my idea to go to the royal and the table bill was £330 with a £30 service charge. Absolutely not worth it with staff like that working there, such a shame as the male staff were lovely. What a let down the Royal.More
