Came for lunch with wife and another couple. The pub seems to be in French hands with lots of interesting French stuff on the walls, and some French sounding staff who were attentive and friendly. We liked the atmosphere are found it comfortable. The menu has a lot of venison and other game. We ate from the lunch set menu, all having venison shoulder and mash. The Venison came light pulled beef (on mashed potato) rather than recognisably like a shoulder, and was delicious. We also all had the sticky toffee pudding also nicely done. We all enjoyed the lunch and the price was very reasonable.

Really lovely country pub. Very busy and couldn't park.in the car park but not a problem. Really nice, friendly staff. The fixed price menu was amazing value and we thought that without the £10 off to EOtoHO which really made it the meal of the year. 2 of us had that, lovely fresh starters of melon and figs, mains of salmon andl lamb and scrummy desserts. The others had fish and chips and sausage and mash, both voted very good.

We stayed in the Six Bells for three nights (excellent room and breakfast) so we ate three nights running in the restaurant. The first night was a Monday when they offer three courses for £19 - extraordinary good value and packed out by a lively crowd. The other two nights were calmer with more time to talk to the delightful staff. The food is British, with local game a feature, and the standard of cooking very high. We are already planning our return trip.

Always enjoyed visits here, good food and friendly staff but Fridays visit didn't feel safe apart from notice to say no standing by bar, limits on number of people in loos and a table with hand sanitiser. Tables felt very close together, tables already laid up and menus handed from table to table without being sanitised as were the condiments. No masks or shields for the staff, like other reviewers it will be long time till we venture back such a great shame.

Six of us went for my birthday meal. Staff could not have been more helpful and the food was excellent. They didn't know it was my birthday before we arrived but made the evening feel special, especially at the end when a lit candle and sweetmeats were produced. Thank you so much

First time visit with family and not disappointed. We had Sunday lunch together and it was really great, a choice of beef lamb or pork with seasonal vegetables. Food excellent service good and friendly infact the young waiters were brilliant. You will pay slightly more than in a normal pub but the food is worth it.

Spent two nights here mid week. The staff are exceptionally helpful and friendly The rooms are decorated to a very high standard. Very clean. Rooms have everything you need for a relaxing stay. Although above the public rooms/restaurant it was quiet and peaceful. Breakfast offered lots of choice and everything was freshly cooked and arrived piping hot Evening meal, again plenty of choice, freshly cooked. I can recommend the fish and chips. Light crispy batter. My friend also found here macaroni tasty and enjoyable. There is not a lot of amenities within the village and a car is really necessary to ensure you can make the most of the surrounding areas. Easy access to Burghley House. Safe car parking I would recommend this hotel to everyone, one of the nicest places I’ve stayed in and probably the best in England as long as you’re not looking for a swimming pool etc.

Well! This was a disappointment - party of six dined for dinner to celebrate a birthday. Two had pizzas both which had soggy bottoms in the middle. One had the breast of lamb (£20+) which, for a meat eater, was hugely disappointingly in that the diner described the dish as two rolls of very fatty gristly lamb. The fish and chips £16.50 looked good to start with but after delving deeper showed about 75% of batter and only a small piece of cod. The size of the plaice £18.50 that another diner had was very small literally about 5” long by about 3” wide - surely such sizes would be thrown back into the sea? Another diner had the steak (£28) which was good - the only meal out of six that was. Location, ambiance of this gastro pub lovely. Service efficient and accommodating.

We live locally but had not been back to the Six Bells for 3 or 4 years as on the last occasion, we just felt rushed and it was a bit like a “conveyor belt” experience and not relaxing at all. There are so many good alternatives locally so there was no need to go again, but we bumped into a friend last weekend and they spoke positively about a recent visit, so we thought we’d give it another try…last night - well that was then and this is now….and it was excellent, in every way. We came into contact with 3 or 4 members of staff and they were all very friendly, polite, efficient and welcoming. We weren’t pressured at all and had a very relaxing evening. The food was outstanding, there was a good range of options on the menu but we both ended up choosing the same thing - pâté to start and Halibut steak for the main course. Prior to the starter, we were served bread which was some of the best I’ve tasted (probably made on the premises but I’m not sure) with excellent butter and the Halibut in particular was perfect, served with new potatoes and a lovely, creamy leek sauce - very hot as well which is the way we like it. We will definitely be paying a return visit ……in 3 or 4 weeks this time!

There is nothing that wasn't perfect. Rooms that look brand new, service that is attentive but not intrusive, dinner so delicious and breakfast that provides so much choice and a plate of fruit that looked like a piece of art. We have stayed in places that have cost much more but not provided anything like the standard if the Six Bells. Thank you for a perfect stay.

We were a party of four, dining at lunchtime in this delightful pub. A very warm welcome and the menu reflected both local produce and fish from wider afield. It is quite far from the coast ! My starter of chicken liver pate with pear chutney was delightful , and my main of Brixham breaded cod with new potatoes in a gorgeous lemon butter sauce with leeks and spinach was a triumph. All of us had super meals and no room for desserts, which was a pity as they were carried to other diners tables and looked delicious. Our first visit with friends who know the pub well. We will return with family in tow. A real find and the owners should be proud of their team.

Stayed overnight in a very comfortable en suite room. Breakfast was included, excellent orange juice and toast, a choice of cooked dishes. We also had lunch, a good range available: can thoroughly recommend the fish and chips and the pizza.

The Six Bells is just what you would expect of a gastropub in this part of the world, It has a large stone flagged patio out front that we had we tried that earlier in the year, but today were headed inside where you find open fires and friendly and efficient staff. The risotto starter was excellent, full of earthy mushroom flavour. Main courses were game themed, pheasant breast was moist and tender, venison ragu also great. Second time here, and it will not be the last.

fish and chips was one of the worst I ever had: it was presumably coley and definitely not cod or haddock, thin and flaky, soggy and tasteless. Chips were not served as in their usual container but hidden under the fish...yes, they were that few, cold and hard. Everything was wrong about it. When we complained about such poor quality, so different from the previous times, a waiter suggested that the dishes might have been waiting on the side for a bit....are we saying that they were pre-cooked? They apologised and that was that. I can only imagine that their usual cook was not working and passing by their kitchen we could see only teenagers cooking....but, then, they should not charge for the same food cooked properly by a professional. will not go back.

Hi Coastal751191, As a rule, we don't reply to reviews as we feel that time is better spent on improving the guest experience. But seeing as you only have a single review - and have created an account for the purpose of slandering an independent business, we will find the time to respond. Firstly we have never served coley as our fish and chips - it is always fillet of cod. Secondly, the chips do not come in a 'usual container' - they have been prepared and cooked in the same way since 2014 and always arrive on the plate, with the beer battered cod. These are both cooked to order. Lastly, during every service our head chef, sous chef or junior sous chef is at the pass. They have been in our kitchen for nine, eight and five years respectively and have a combined 54 years experience in the industry, so the observations you made 'passing by' our kitchen are untrue. Nonetheless, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your visit and I hope you enjoy the rest of your bank holiday weekend. Kind regards, James

There’s few things better in life than a good pub, good food, good wine and a log burner (& the odd good boy in the form of a dog) The six bells has something for everyone, the ingredients are fresh and local and the desserts are just yum. The staff are attentive but not overpowering, you know they’re there but are left to enjoy your meal and drinks. It’s the perfect pub for a Sunday roast or Saturday date night! The village are very lucky to have such a great place on their doorstep, the Trevor family were put on earth to entertain and host and it’s home from home when you’re their guests at the pub. Watch this space for a stunning terrace area being built for that all year round al fresco dining. If you’re thinking about giving the bells a go, do it. Not often is it that you find a pub that is consistent in service, no matter how busy they are you’re always felt to be the most important person in the room
