We have visited this fine restaurant several times before. This time, there was a new head chef, James and it was to be our first experience of the new dining and kitchen format where you sit close to the pass and can see the chefs at work. The chefs serve the dishes and the whole evening begins with a welcome at the pass with an amuse bouche from James.
I have to say I was sceptical that this new approach would be an improvement but it definitely was. The whole thing seems more dynamic and modern and the chef is beginning to make his distinctive mark on the food which was superb and very creative. The staff led by Xavier at front of house are all superb and the young chefs who served us were really lovely, enthusiastic and committed to their food. We stayed in one of their excellent rooms on site.
This is not a cheap experience (Michelin restaurants are generally not) but the food, the people and the overall standard makes it value for money. We shall return!

“From the moment we walked into Winteringham Fields it was clear this wasn’t just another meal but a carefully orchestrated symphony of flavors, textures, and experiences. A one-star Michelin rating might seem modest for a place of such refinement, but the culinary depth and meticulous presentation are nothing short of stellar.”
“Nestled in Winteringham this quiet haven included hotel accommodation which created an environment that felt both intimate and inviting. Every element seemed crafted to draw attention back to what matters most — the food and the amazing Wintra Suite”
The meal began with an amuse-bouche that set the bar incredibly high — a bite-sized explosion of Marmite Gougere/ Autumn Truffle. As each course arrived, we was continually impressed by James and his teams ability to balance traditional flavors with unexpected twists. The Venison and Turbot was a revelation, with layers of flavours. Every dish was a work of art, with each ingredient given space to shine.”
“The service at Winteringham Fields was impeccable. The staff was attentive without being intrusive, effortlessly anticipating our needs and offering thoughtful recommendations that elevated our experience. Their knowledge of each dish and its background added an educational element to the evening.”
“Dining at Winteringham Fields felt like more than just a meal; it was an immersive experience that pushed the boundaries of what food can be. In a county that is brimming with fine dining options, it stands out not only for the precision of its dishes but for its ability to evoke emotion and memory with every bite. A one-star Michelin rating may only hint at the excellence of this establishment — We both have left with memories that will linger long after the final bite.”
“Oh and by the way Wintra suite was fantastic.

excellent food and service. The dining room is dressed very well and it has real character. We both ordered the tasting menus and bottles of wine separate (not wine flights). Cocktails also very good, rhubarb and custard desert delicious !

What a fabulous lunch experience we have had today. We are experienced Michelin diners and this was in our top 5 (out of 46)
As soon as you arrive you are greeted in the car park and ushered through for a pre-drink and some beautiful appetisers.
You're then led in to meet James and his young, but clearly incredibly skillful brigade, before being shown to your table. We really loved this little touch.
The kitchen is there in the dining room, think “chefs table” without the premium experience £ uplift!
Everything served was just stunning. I eat absolutely anything, my wife is a vegetarian and the superlatives kept coming from us both.
The service was attentive but un-intrusive, always there as soon as you needed anything, but there wasn’t an obsession to fill your glass with water.
We chatted to James, ate amazing food and enjoyed the soundtrack.
Just brilliant!
There are only a handful of restaurants we’d revisit, this is one of them, next time we will stay the night.
Did I mention it’s brilliant?

£340 - 8 course taster for 2, could fit all the 'samples' on one plate. The lamb rib was just a line of fat, the miniscule piece of Pidgeon was simply unchewable and not a pleasant experience, the small piece of fish was ok as was the bread, but overall, i am still reeling at the price. My grown up children paid for this as a birthday present, and, to be brutally honest, i would not have paid any more than £40 for the experience. The setting was exceptional, but having tasted dishes from all corners of the world, this was a real let down, but again, £340 plus service charge.........!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry you did not raise your concerns at time of dining to enable us to act upon your disappointment. At Winteringham Fields our guests are at the heart of everything we do. Our front of house team pride theselves on delivering an exceptional experience that exceeds expectations. Whilst Gareth and his brigade of chefs use only the very best local ingredients to create an imaginative 8 course tasting menu that reflects the season. I am sorry on this occaision we did not exceed your expectations and the menu was not to your liking

The tasting menu was a well thought through experience with innovative dishes that all linked together beautifully. The theatrical element of being moved around the restaurant, being able to see the kitchen and the chefs describing how each dish was cooked and answering our questions really added to the experience. We have visited nearly all of London’s two and three Michelin star restaurants and thought the food was on par with the two star restaurants we’ve been to in terms of creativity and execution, and definitely head and shoulders above any other one star restaurant we’ve visited. Given the food was two star quality and the experience around it, we felt the £180 tasting menu was good value for money.
There were certain minor tweaks that would have improved the tasting menu (the broccoli and sauce in the duck dish were too salty for example and the chocolate dessert, while faultless, lacked the creativity and character of the rest of the menu and did not fit in). Similarly, while the service staff were all lovely, there were minor things that could be improved (empty glasses being left, breadcrumbs on the table not being cleared for the entire meal, used spoons not being replaced and us having to share a spoon for example). Once these very small issues are addressed we would bet this place will get its second star soon.
Overall this hidden gem is worth making a detour for if you’re ever in the area. Wholeheartedly recommended for anyone who is passionate about food. It’s extremely rare to get all dishes on an eight course menu consistently right, and this restaurant has definitely achieved it.

We visited for my wife's birthday and stayed overnight. Initial impressions were good and the room was adequate.
We arrived at around 1630 and were told we could use the bar and have a drink if we wished. However it took 20 minutes to find somebody to serve us - other people were also using the bar area. So this was a bit of a negative start.
Things improved later when we we went for the meal (there was more staff on) and the service was much improved. We were served a drink and appetisers prior to going for the meal.
The food was excellent with some of the courses being served by the chefs. We also had the prestige Wine flight which was a little disappointing.
The restaurant and staff were great.
I felt compare to other Michelin Star establishments nearby that this was over priced. Alchemilla in Nottingham or Hambleton Hall in Rutland offer a lot more finesse and refinement for less money. In fact Sat Bains with 2 stars is better value.
The menu was a surprise tasting menu which is fine, however when ordering the Prestige Wine flights the waiter wouldn't tell us what wines were included - personally the Wine is a large part of the experience for me and I found this irritating, I also found that some of the wines were on both flights so I questioned just how prestige some of the wine actually was.
Overall we did have a good night and the food itself was excellent. The breakfast the next morning was also fantastic and a great start to the day.

An unforgettable dining experience from start to finish! From the moment we arrived, we were treated like VIPs. As we pulled into the car park, a staff member was there to greet us, which really set the tone for the level of service we were about to experience.
The real highlight for me was getting to meet the head chef in the kitchen. He took the time to personally explain the entire concept behind the menu, which added so much depth to the meal. It wasn’t just about eating delicious food – it was about understanding the thought and care behind each dish.
The flavours throughout the meal were nothing short of intense. Each bite was a real explosion of taste, with unexpected combinations that worked perfectly together. You could tell every ingredient was chosen for a reason, and the attention to detail was next level.
The staff were absolutely outstanding. Despite being a young team, they carried themselves with the confidence and skill of people who’ve been doing this for 50 years. The level of professionalism was truly impressive. Even the apprentice they had with them stood out, already showing great promise and fitting in seamlessly with the rest of the team.
If you're after a truly unique dining experience with a personal touch and unforgettable flavours, I can't recommend Winteringham Fields enough. We’ll definitely be back!

I feel very conflicted writing this review as there's no doubt the venue, food and service are fantastic.
However, for the money we spent on one night's stay with food and drink (almost £700) I would want perfection and it simply didn't happen.
We were promised a 'turndown' of the bedding and refresh of necessities which didn't happen. After being seated in the bar I had to find someone to serve us drinks ! Unfortunately on the next table there were 'professional complainers' which was somewhat distracting and on another table there was a party of 6 who were quite drunk, very loud and seemed happy to us the F word a lot - but I accept that there's little that can be done by staff. The food and paired wines were first class and after 8 courses I have to say I was pretty full and I'd discovered some really nice wines too. The room we stayed in was very well appointed, nice bath and double walk in shower (albeit the shower screen leaked water onto the bathroom floor), the bed was really really really comfy and bedding fresh. The room element of our stay cost us £220 for the night and tbh I found it disappointing that a cooked breakfast was an additional supplement, as was a fruit salad option on the continental breakfast.
So, my conflict .... Would I go again ? Simple answer yes !
Would I pay almost £700 ?
NO as sadly for that money it wasn't all it should be !!

We have eaten at a number of Michelin starred restaurants and considered Winteringham to be up there with the best with the same rating.
Exceptional staff who provided friendly and attentive service. Greatly enjoyed dishes being served by the young chefs who were very enthusiastic.
The menu was imaginative with good flavours. The breads were delicious, but beware not to eat too much as then you struggle with the remaining courses.
Bedroom was comfortable and had an excellent coffee machine with fresh milk in the fridge. Some of the carpets on the stairs and landing looked dated and those arias could do with some updating.
The breakfast supervisor was efficient, friendly and able to answer all our questions about the place.

We have dined in several Michelin star restaurants and as we were in the area thought we would try this one. Very quiet - we were the only customers for the first half hour - no atmosphere. Food was tasty but not amazing. We asked the chef Ryan what breed of lamb it was which he was telling about that we were about to eat but he had no idea. He said he could find out but never returned to inform us and we found him at the end to ask him - he still did not know. A minor detail but disappointing. When we were presented with the bill at the end we had been charged the full price of £85 per person for lunch when I had booked the special offer of lunch for 2 for £145. This was then rectified. Still very quiet when we left and lacking in atmosphere. I don’t think we will return.

I had a nice lunch here recently. I have eaten here many times and it really is a lovely restaurant.
Our greeting from the staff was warm and welcoming and as it was a nice day we sat outside for a drink first.
The food we were served was delicious. I’m a vegetarian and the beetroot dish was beautiful. My favourite was the desert, a caramel slice (can’t remember the name of it but it was Devine). My husbands meat dishes were more substantial than mine and he said they were really good. My actual main course was a small piece of very tasty cabbage with a sprinkle of nuts, one course was one floret of cauliflower (again very beautifully prepared and tasty). understand this is a taster menu but I’ve eaten in many restaurants of this calibre and do feel they could put a bit more effort into the veggie dishes and make them a little more substantial (thank god for the bread!).
The service was very friendly however lunch did go on for almost four hours and in all honestly I started to get bored. Waits of 20 minutes or so between courses are not really necessary when you are having a 7 course meal (when each course is very small). Maybe the staff should ask if you want the meal super leisurely or whether you would prefer courses to come out relatively quickly. The table next to us had to leave in a hurry (they had to miss the cheese which I’d overheard them saying they really wanted) as they were going to miss collecting their children from school and hadn’t realised three hours wasn’t long enough for lunch. We had to arrange somebody to collect our children from school as it became evident we wouldn’t make it only half way through our meal due to the long gaps between courses.
The cheese trolley (although I had a massive wait and to get as the waitress disappeared into the kitchen for a very long time and I had to ask staff to find for me) was absolutely beautiful.
The wines and fox Gins are really top quality, the house champagne was lovely and we really enjoyed the coffee with little treats at the end.
Although my review is a bit of a mixed one I will definitely look forward to going again although with lunch costing approx £350 with drinks I will probably wait for a special occasion.

This was our third visit and it didn’t disappoint. The food is always stunning and is especially appreciated as one of us does not eat meat. We love making a break out of it and their rooms give us an opportunity to feel that we have had a mini holiday. It is so incredibly useful that well behaved dogs are allowed, thus enabling us to have the overnight! To be fair an overnight, a full meal, breakfast the next day and delicious glasses of champagne pre dinner, and a couple of bottles of pleasant wines ,would pay for a weekend in most places, but it’s a treat and worth every penny. Sincerely hope to stay again on our next visit back to the UK.

I suspect no-one visits Winteringham as a tourist attraction but there is a good reason to go which is Winteringham Fields Restaurant. (I must say the beer and welcome at the Bay Horse next door was also pretty good). It may have taken us over a decade to finally make it there for an overnight stay in a dog friendly room but it was worth it.
8 course tasting menu plus the very imaginative wine pairings were worth the money. Basically anyone who can make a potato dish (Potato and Eel) into a taste sensation has my vote. One dish each not to our taste, but you expect that in a tasting menu. Someone seems to have taken a great deal of time to source unusual wines from around the world and finding tastes and styles you wouldn't normally expect made the wine pairings a highlight.
Accommodation felt a bit dated in style, but it was fine and we weren't there for anything other than the food.

This was a belated present from our grandson and we were really looking forward to visiting this restaurant again. On arrival we were greeted by friendly staff who were very attentive. We enjoyed a pre lunch drink and were served with some delicious canapés in very comfortable surroundings. Lunch however failed to meet our expectations and was very ordinary. The main course failed to impress, my Yorkshire pudding was bordering on being burnt and the potatoes only just cooked through. I do have to say my dessert was very nice. Sadly I was served a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon which was nothing short of being extremely unpleasant and I would not have cooked with it let alone drink it. When I complained I was brought another glass from a fresh bottle but sadly this was not much better. I find it hard to believe an establishment of this reputation would serve such a poor wine which most certainly carried a price far beyond its quality. On visiting the ladies toilet there sadly was nothing to dry my hands on, there was a pile of used small towels in a basket on the floor at the side of the wash basin but nothing for me to use, there was empty rack where I presume fresh towels should have been, this was not what I expected.

Good afternoon,
Thank you for your review and please be assured that we have taken all of your comments on board and will address them all. The wine was served to other guests from the new bottle and we have not had any other comments but the Cabernet wine is not to everyones taste I am afraid. We are sorry that you were disappointed with the lunch but we hope that you will join us again so that we can restore your faith in us.
Kind Regards
Janet
