Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Spent a lovely evening here, courtesy of my partner to celebrate my birthday and what a great choice she made. The pub was lovely and bustling, friendly and welcoming. Three things made it stand out -
1. The waiting staff. Attentive but not fussy, and came over at the right times for drinks orders mid meal. They were smartly dressed in the uniform and very nice.
2. The food - both our meals were exceptional (cod in curried chickpeas and a flat iron steak cooked perfectly). We shared meals and each of us agreed that both mains were a great choice.
3. The amazing generosity of the chef who was willing to share some details of the curry base, and the waiter who took the time to write it down for us (in beautiful handwriting!) so we could try to recreate it at home. Thank you!
So all in all, a brilliant night and good value for money, considering how great the food was. We will be back pretty soon to work our way through the menu :-)

We have eaten here on several occasions and always enjoyed it. The menu is imaginative and the quality of the food very good. The young staff are very pleasant and efficient and have obviously been well trained. But our experience last night merits a special mention. My husband has intolerance to certain (not all) dairy products which we notified in advance when booking the table. Most establishments just produce the list of 14 allergens which do not apply in his case. However in advance of our visit last night someone had gone through the whole menu and checked the ingredients of every dish then had written down for him which dishes would and would not be safe for him. We were very impressed at the trouble they had taken over this. We will definitely be returning.

Boxing Day, initially proprietors had put themselves out to accommodate additional numbers at the last minute; this they did without fuss.
If I eat out on occasions such as Christmas, Fathers Day etc when it’s going to be bursting, I’m prepared for poor service and/or food.
I have to say, everything was faultless, the table was ready waiting! Well it can’t carry on as good surely…oh yes, throughout the meal. Every ounce of food that came out was perfect! Where have you been…bearing in mind there were 13 of us, vegetables are hot, hot, hot! The food all was incredible and yes hot!
Drinks were served immediately, in fact, I think you’ll understand that this place is incredible, all the staff make it that way, and we all give you a huge thank you for making this day extremely special.
Thank you again for your patience when booking.
The Brackner Family.

This place is absolutely superb. We've wanted to go for ages and it was worth the wait... one of the best Sunday roasts that I've ever had. It is well worth the awards and the reputation that The Railway has.
I went for the roast beef which was cooked to perfection, amazing roast potatoes and Yorkshire puds and the veg was fantastic.
One thing I loved... we were sat near the pass and saw them plating up some roast dinners. Something obviously delayed things so they couldn't finish in time and they threw it all away and started again, rather than sending out food that had been under the heat lamp for ages. That's a commitment to standards and I really liked it.
Only downside... we weren't offered sauces. We had pork, beef and chicken and there was no offer for apple sauce, horseradish etc. Also generally I prefer to pour my own gravy on a roast so I can have it where I want, but that's a small gripe.
Service was largely excellent.
It's not the cheapest, we spent about £150 on four Sunday roasts, two desserts and a few drinks, but it's worth it for a treat. Absolutely brilliant and we can't wait to return!

Staff and service good . My friend and I both decided to have a roast . One beef one chicken. The beef was undercooked despite the fact that my friend was asked how he would like it cooked. Roast potatoes looked nice but although the outside was brown and crispy the inside wasn't cooked. I couldn't understand why there was half a red onion on my plate! It was my birthday and we were both disappointed.
We could have gone to a Toby Carvery for half the price but we wanted the lunch to be special

Disappointing visit.
Very small portions, enough id say for a child.
Mentioned to the manager who informed me that they weigh the food.
Having sat near the kitchen I could see that the potato and greens were not measured and the chef was taking to the server whilst he was putting my food, or rather lack of it onto a plate, which was not situated under a heat lamp.
Food arrived luke warm as anticipated.
My partners fish and chips were extremely greasy and he felt sick after eating some of them.
You need to have all 3 courses otherwise you will go hungry, and i am not a big eater.

Thank you alibob2014 for your review.
Here at The Railway, we welcome all forms of feedback as we strive to better ourselves in the hospitality trade.
We do remember your table and I am sorry to hear that your visit was not to your liking, but we have taken your comments on board.
Following a conversation with the staff that night, I do believe that you have missed out key bits of information from your visit.
*During your meal a check back was done and nothing was mentioned until after you had eaten all of your food. If at this point we were made aware of any issues, we would of happily rectified them there and then
*A discount was given on your main courses to the amount of 25% which I believe was sufficient as you had eaten all of your food bar a few bits of batter
*Although a discount was added to your bill, we appreciate that if this wasn’t to your satisfaction, to then forebode us with a bad Trip Advisor review is definitely not way to go about it.
I hope that going forward you may be a bit more clear in your reviews of any establishment you visit (positive or negative).
Regards,
Drew

We had the most brilliant Sunday meal with family at The Railway last week. There was a big group of us - 14 all together and I have to say, the service and food was impeccable. We were seated and served drinks immediately. The food came out piping hot and delicious with no big waits between courses. Everyone in the group said how much they had enjoyed both the meal and the service - no mean feat when it comes to such a large group. We were honestly so impressed and can't wait to come back again. This is a gem of a pub with wonderful staff. Thank you to the team for looking after us so well.

Nice atmosphere and good service. The food however was pretty poor. I went for fish and chips. I counted 12 chips, which I think were of the frozen variety. The fish wasn't the best quality, certainly not the most fresh and the batter was medium soggy. At £17 a portion it was the opposite of good value. Around the table nothing really stood out food wise. Totally underwhelming.

Such a great pub. We came a few times of the last year and the vegan meals used to wonderful, but sadly no more. The last vegan meal of gnocchi was hugely dissapointing, basically like soft gnocchi with what seemed like jar of dolmio sauce. There used to be fancy meals so it's such a shame to see such a huge change on the menu. Sadly we won't be back.

We have been to The Railway on several occasions, food usually good, not great but average. Today if they could get it wrong they did. My elderly father in law ordered a black coffee with cream. It arrived luke warm with milk. They replaced it. My partner and I ordered the Ham with Beetroot Remouldade sandwich both with side order of chips. Mine arrived without the chips. Both sandwiches were so dry, bread clearly a few days old and the remouldade which should be moist was dry. Both sandwiches returned and we just had the chips, when mine finally arrived. Cost of sandwiches deducted from bill but lunch ruined for us. Will not be returning.

Used the Railway a number of times over the last few years. I find the staff welcoming and attentive, the menu has enough variety to suit most tastes. On the latest visit we chose to sit on a small decking area overlooking the garden, lovely spot in the late sunshine. Enjoyed our visit and will return.

I thoroughly enjoyed the ambience of this pub and the service was excellent. However in terms of value for money I felt that the content of my BLT was vastly overpriced. The granary bread , lettuce and tomato was fine but four tiny pieces of streaky bacon for £8 even in these troubled times is a bit of a Mickey take. My friend enjoyed his fish and chips but at £15 this too seemed excessive.

Previously had some really great vegan food but the menu at the moment is really disappointing. Its all heavily carb based with no nod to protein whatsoever. I had a bowl of gnocchi in tomato and basil 'ragu' which was just a sauce with few chopped olives thrown in. Not unpleasant but also not the sort of meal you want to eat out at those prices. Starters were soup and bread or tomato and garlic topped flat bread. Desserts which previously have been so good are now just sorbet or ice cream. Would struggle to go back.

Called in this evening for tea.
Greeted by a fab member of staff and taken to a table.
In fact I would go as far to stay all the staff that were working were welcoming and couldn’t do enough to help- nothing was to much trouble.
We ordered from the menu which has a great selection.
My hubby had Fish & chips which was excellent and I ordered Salmon with a lobster sauce- the sauce wasn’t to my liking as I felt it was watery I expected it to be creamy so I informed the waiter who quickly spoke to the chef and rectified my dish.
It was absolutely delicious and I was extremely impressed with the quality of the food and the service absolutely nothing was to much trouble.
I would definitely recommend a trip to the railway at Lowdham and well done to the management team you have got all aspects of service and the quality of the food spot on!

Take an abundance of effortlessly happy and attentive staff, an attractively presented environment, a classy and varied menu and some of the tastiest and beautifully presented food I’ve ever eaten (at a restaurant....my wife might read this) and you have all the ingredients for success.
These are the qualities we found at The Railway at Lowdham where we enjoyed a succulent steak meal from their lunchtime menu.
In a very warm and welcoming environment even during Covid restrictions, the restaurant management have worked hard to provide something which, for us, was a perfect dining experience.
True, the extended £10 per diner off offer was the reason we found ourselves there in the first place but even without that, given the excellence of the occasion provided, the menu is very competitively priced. Rest assured, we will be back.
Well done The Railway.
