About
The Red Lion is a small, traditional English village pub, run by hands-on owners and a small staff team. We have a bar, meeting room and a dining room. There is a log burner in the bar. The pub is carpeted throughout. The terrace at the front is a lovely spot to eat and drink in the warmer weather. We have a selection of real ales brewed by Hook Norton. Lagers, cider and Guinness are also available. A selection of wines is also available by the glass. We specialise in delicious, thin crust pizzas with a good selection of toppings, which are served every day. We also fry fish and chips and serve great steak, burgers and pies. We have catered for vegans and gluten free requests. We are pet-friendly and welcome well-behaved children.

We booked for Sunday lunch in "dry" January, so it was fairly quiet. It's a quiet village corner a mile or so from the Oxford canal and a train station, with a bus stop yards away and easy parking nearby. 12 miles to Oxford. The bar was companionable: a burner burning; a newspaper being read; relaxed conversation wandering around the room. Talk included vegan food, families, commuting, and conventional conversational gambits. Sirloin and lamb with 5 veg were served promptly and enjoyed, the beer was good and they had elderflower cordial too. Warm and relaxing.

I’ve just had possible the best steak I’ve ever eaten with homemade thrice cooked chips and a perfect salad. My daughter had a pizza (you can individually choose your toppings), cooked to perfection in their pizza oven. We will definitely be back.

Was staying at The Holt hotel, so had a walk to this gem of a pub. Great beef selection, staff very friendly, all following COVID-19 procedures, felt very safe. Beautiful garden, well worth a visit.

A real shame that this local pub is not able to serve basic food well. If you want a raw carrot to take home for a pet this is the place for you! Chicken burger was so hard you'd need a very sharp tool to cut through and triple cooked chips are just over done frozen chips...in old oil. Probably OK for a pint and pizza but that be all.

This pub offers excellent food from a simple but well cooked menu and a range of well kept beers from the Oxfordshire area.. The decor of the pub is traditional but very well mantained. I found the customer service just about adequate for lunch.

As many local people, I was very excited for the new ownership. They promised a larger menu, better service and longer opening times (in their first week so we kept our fingers crossed!) After a few months, they have had no changes to their menu (only limited options), the staff are inexperienced, impolite and eager to finish their shift. The management are completely silent and never around. Such a shame as the local community was very excited for the pub to be open, but unfortunately… the owner seems to care more about keeping staff at a minimum and charging high prices. The last time myself and my partner had food, we asked for a minor alteration to the menu (no cheese in the burger) and we were told that the chef was unable to change anything. The gentleman behind the bar then informed us that the chef that night was still at college, and most of the food comes from their sister pub? Hooky need to reevaluate the people they employ to manage their pubs because this owner seems to not care about it at all - just the money he can make.

Enjoyed a pleasant pub meal and drinks outside after a day out nearby with friends. The staff were very helpful and welcoming. Our large table for 4 from 2 households was ready and waiting allowing us to chat comfortably whilst at an appropriate distance. A relaxing time throughout - thank you!

We went to The Red Lion in search of food which they were not able to provide owing to being a chef down (or something). But it was such a welcoming atmosphere we decided to stay for a drink and proceeded to have such a nice time we stayed for three more. Lovely staff, friendly locals, the dog got a warm welcome (and dog treats) and we left not caring about the food. A great, local pub as it should be

A lovely pub with good food and a warm welcome from Chris and his staff who went out of their way to provide lunch even though we arrived after hours. Lunch was a superb authentic thin pizza with roasted Mediterranean vegetables and a half of Hooky. We enjoyed the beautifully planted garden with gazebos and comfortable seating. The locals clearly think a lot of what Chris is doing here, a new venture for him and his wife. He also showed us the cake parlour that they are creating, which will be opening soon. We’ll look forward to coming back again to visit the restaurant. A very good pub to stop at for refreshments.

Hook Norton pub located at the far western end of the village. There are newish, friendly licensees in here and they appear to have given the place a bit of a refresh, but without spoiling the character of the pub. They have three well kept Hook Norton ales available on handpump and a menu which focuses on pizzas and burgers, plus a traditional lunch served on Sundays. The main bar area is fairly small but there is a separate restaurant area to the rear and there are a few tables outside.

First beer in the village! Very warm welcome from Victoria and Craig, the new Hook Norton Brewery tenant landlady and landlord. They took over at the start of March and have already started making their own mark on the interior and facilities, dialling down a little of the brightness from the previous tenants’ tenure. Great big log burner in the corner. Dogs welcome. We had a tasty vegetarian risotto and traditional ham egg and chips. No doubt we’ll work our way through the rest of the menu in due course. Steak next time. A steady stream of locals filled the main bar and the chat and hubbub created a pleasant vibe in the place. Wishing Craig and Victoria the very best for their new venture. 👍

Forget about the negative reviews, the couple have been running it for less than a year. Craig and Mrs run a beautiful wee pub, full of character and dinner was beautifully presented and tasted just delightful. Pity the regulars all seem to think they are snobs or wannabe snobs which is really sad but hey small village big egos. Overall worth every penny and we will go back

So, this page suggests it closes at 23.30 on a Friday. On this particular Friday I am refused a pint at 22.55 and I'm told the pub closes at 23.00. Shorter licensing hours than those I endured nearly 40 years ago. This for a village pub. By the way, I had only had 3 pints!

Awful service with bad food what more needs saying! Food was cold, rude staff and lack of attention to detail. No one asked if anything was ok, which it wasn’t when we mentioned that food was cold etc, they just gave us the bill !

We popped in here with our dog on a walk and ended up staying for the whole evening and ordering food. It has a lovely beer garden and is being refurbed inside and upstairs. The owner Chris and bar staff were great - Chris was even nice enough to give us a lift home! Pizza and scampi were lovely and the Guinness was good to. Highly recommend and if we go back to the we would certainly stay here. Beautiful pub. Thanks Chris!
