Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

OK, so for many years, prior to the M5 being built (and that's a long, long time ago) this is a pub we used to pass on the A361 between Ilfracombe and Warwickshire and it was always somewhere I wanted my dad to stop at....We never did. Now I am a big boy (in more ways than one) I decided to give it a go on a very wet Thursday lunchtime. Now, when you used to walk in to a pub the greeting used to be, "good afternoon" or maybe "hello sir". Nope, we received from the youth behind the bar a, "hello guys what can I get you?" Now I know it is 2024 not 1994 (more's the pity maybe) but take it from someone who did bar work very well for over ten years, that's not now you meet and greet customers you haven't met before. No, no, no, no!! I ordered drinks - ammused how the operative held the glass when pouring a pint. Certainly a new one on me. Sort of how you hold your hand whilst holding a skull, when you say, "Allas poor Yorik, I knew him well". We ordered sandwiches with bread made by chef. It didn't say when he/she/they made it, but if 'fresh bread' was written on the menu, it would have been a fib, a big one. The bread was microwave warm but I think this was an attempt to revive it, a bit like when you give someone mouth to mouth resusitation but with a microwave. It didn't work anyway and neither did cutting off most of the crusts to disguise it's advanced age. We left some loose change on the table hoping that the funds would go towards some bleach to clean the unisex bog. What a big let down after all those years driving by Won't stop again and certainly won't be back.More

We visited this pub after hearing that they had won an award so we were expecting something fairly special. Oh my goodness how did they get this award and who are the people writing the excellent reviews? We both had Sunday lunch and it was...okay, nothing special particularly for the price charged. We had plenty of food particularly a dish of vegetables that contained all sorts, which would have been great but everything was piled on top of everything. There was beetroot but this had tainted other vegetables with beetroot pink, not a lovely look. I absolutely love vegetables but I was put off by the presentation. The whole place looks to be in need of a good clean both inside and out. I wasn’t too impressed on walking from the car park to see rubbish outside the kitchen and other bits a pieces that had been left around for what appeared to be a long time. As I say the food was okay but we certainly won’t be back again.More

This place is a locals pub. Very loud customers. I assume the older lady behind the bar is the landlady? Not good first impressions. Came down to meet a friend at his local pub but couldn't park in the car park it's a bit tight. So...had to park.by the bridge. Place dirty though. Needs a good clean. Good job i.was driving as the beer is actually alright.More

Repeat trip as the food was so good the first time and it didnt disappoint on a second visit. The pub was packed with groups having Christmas gatherings, but the lovely landlady managed to fit us in. The staff here are friendly and attentive, nothing...is too much trouble. The food is locally sourced where possible with a list of suppliers. I had the haddock and chips and the fish was sublime, soft moist flakes with the most delicate, crisp batter, proper potato chips also yummy. Good value too. Another lovely experience.More

Food was delicious. Had a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich with a bowl of chips snd a couple of pints there at lunchtime. The bread for the sandwich was home-made, the chips were home-made as well. You can tell they had not come out of...the freezer, they were skin on, made on-site chips, and the bacon was really thick and tasty. Food was promptly brought out as well. Great place to stop after a country walk.More

We met family for lunch here on a rainy October Wednesday. Staff were friendly and the bar area has a wood burner and was warm and cosy. Upstairs there is another floor of tables overlooking the bridge and river, and also an outside dining area....The pub was quiet when we visited. The food was excellent. Three of us had the pie of the day (lamb) with chips and veggies, the fourth had a ploughman’s with ham and goat’s cheese. Everything freshly prepared and chips clearly hand-cut and definitely not from a freezer-bag! Pies were very tasty and filling on a cold day. The ham was thickly cut from a joint, and the crusty bread was delicious. The puds were also much enjoyed - chocolate brownie and treacle roly-polys - and relatively inexpensive at £6 each. The post-lunch coffee was also excellent. Service was prompt throughout, and we were able to order from our table instead of going up to the bar. The free WiFi was useful. This pub deserves to be busier than it was today. We enjoyed our visit very much and will definitely be returning when next in the area.More

Went here with family for a Sunday lunch. Customer service was really poor from the waiting staff. The drinks were slammed down on the table and the Diet Coke tasted flat. The Sunday lunch was very disappointing. The roasties were black and hard and the...vegetables were undercooked. The vegetables that were given to us were all mixed together and didn’t look very appetising. Looked like scraps put together from the compost bin. Won’t be returning, don’t waste your money.More

We ate food from here again last night and as usual it never fails to delight us this is not your usual pub grub ...although that is available but more like a top restaurant menu. I am gluten free and have other allergies and they...are always careful to make sure what I eat is safe they also have lots of choice for things I can eat. I had fish last night which was perfectly cooked with perfectly cooked baby potatoes and veg husband had duck one of my allergies and said it was delicious it certainly smelt good. Everyone here is so friendly and we always have good food. Suggest you book as even on weekday mid day they get busy often with locals which is always a good signMore

We dropped in today for a casual lunch, which we occasionally do, we choose pot roasted partridge. It was absolutely delicious. It’s a long time since I’ve seen such a dish on a pub menu, mind you they often have slightly rare food, ostrich or...buffalo 🦬 for instance but the also have straightforward pub grub. Good on you.🍺🍷👍❤️More

I’ve had a local cider here but had never eaten previously. My partner and I visited nearby Glastonbury on a Saturday and booked a table for that eve. The Specials menu changes regularly with theme/Countries of the world food etc. I’ve always wanted a Tomahawk...Steak and low and behold a “32oz Tomahawk was on their specials menu” Medium Rare with Jacket chips, garden peas, homemade onion rings and an organic tomato, cooked to perfection and it was like slicing butter!! Absolutely the best steak dinner I’ve had(and I’ve had many), My partner had dressed crab and that was perfection also. Many thanks for a great dining experience, we WILL be back.More

Having been recommended to this place for Sunday lunch from a fellow vegetarian we thought we'd try it. We rang to book, asked specifically about the nut roast and booked a table. It was all downhill from there. We arrived for our 1.15pm reservation to...be told the nutroast was sold out. The other veggie dishes were pasta or curry! Won't bore you with the exchanges of conversation with the staff, safe to say, poor service and poor food equals no return.More
