Nestled in a charming setting, the Lord Poulett Arms restaurant offers a quaint ambiance that's been celebrated by patrons for its absence of TVs and music, creating a backdrop filled with the buzz of conversation and laughter. While the food receives a polarized reception—some guests commend specific dishes for their taste and presentation, others find the offerings to be uninspiring and not worth the price. Despite the divided opinions on cuisine and value, the service at Lord Poulett Arms garners universal acclaim for its attentive and amiable staff, enhancing the overall dining experience.

We booked a table of four at the Lord Poulet Arms during the Eat Out.. scheme. We’ve been a few times over the years and love the flagstone floors, original beams and stylish muted colour palette which gives it a traditional feel without a horse brass in sight! The garden is also fabulous and although now partially undercover we’d elected to eat inside, which was a blessing as it lashed it down all day. On arrival our table wasn’t ready so we were asked to have drinks in their garden while we waited, not a problem as it had finally stopped raining by then, but bar service was patchy and we waited a while even though there were five people behind the bar. Once seated indoors we waited for menus which we had to ask for after 10 minutes and a member of staff admitted they’d forgotten us and then rushed around to take our order. Three of us had mussels in cider to start, which were delicious and a decent portion size, and our fourth had the seafood platter which was a nice selection. Main courses were all tempting but we liked the sound of the ‘specials’ beef cheeks with buttery mash and an onion tartlet, which was a good choice as it was rich and tender and the onion was the perfect accompaniment. Unfortunately everyone had the same idea and there were only three available, so our fourth member had the confit duck leg, which was also well cooked with good accompanying vegetables. The wine list provides plenty of choices and caters for the majority of tastes, available by glass and bottle, most are reasonably priced. We chose the Portuguese Mariana Tinto which was great with the beef and the cheese board we shared to follow. We finished with coffee and a very nice Cotswold Distillery Cream Liqueur. Once we got over the initial blips this place was as good as ever, they were very busy and newly opened following lockdown, so understandable. We really enjoyed our experience and I would recommend. Our bill came to around £300 so not cheap, but we all had pre drinks, three courses, coffee etc. and at least 3 bottles of wine so we thought it was quite reasonable and you definitely get good quality here.

I had no doubts in booking here as I had stayed twice before when Michelle and partner ran it. When I heard it had been sold to The Beckford Arms group, I was keen to try having stayed both there and at The Talbot. None of the charm has been lost in these times, but the addition of good WiFi and TV's in the room was a great improvement. We heard the chef was the same and indeed the food was excellent...the only criticism was more bread should be served with the potted ham hock starter. The steak was among the best eaten by my wife and cooked to perfection, the accompanying salad and chips were also great. Breakfast was excellent though I had to ask for tomato juice and without the self service option, could not justify asking for the slug of vodka usually available at sister establishments. All in all a great stay with good service and staff. We will of course be back...

Mike and Tina as part of the Lord Poulett team, have organised the best takeaway fish and chips in the world. I will never go to a regular fish and chip shop again. There should be a law against Mike's batter and the fish was so fresh. Can't wait for next Friday. I've already booked my spot and paid.

On arrival we were shown to our table but asked to move as it was in a small room adjacent to a table of six. We were quickly found a more suitable alternative. After ordering our drinks and food, the drinks were served in quick time but we had to wait an hour for our food. Unfortunately, we were served our main course before our starter! These dishes were taken away and we had to wait a further 15-20 minutes for our starters. When our mains were eventually served, neither of us were 100% convinced that they hadn’t been kept warm. The food was okay but not great, the fresh homemade bread was dry and crusty. The staff did apologise and gave us a 25% discount but this did not make up for spoiling our 25th wedding anniversary. In a recent Times review, Giles Coren remarked that during lockdown, the 3 owners of this establishment had written a book detailing how service should be run. Maybe management should be handing out a few copies? Overall more Lord Melchett from Blackadder than Lord Poulett.

Booked 2 weeks in advance. On arrival for evening meal told we would be seated outside. We asked to be inside as it really chills off, this was accommodated. But we should have been asked at time of booking if we wanted inside or out. Not asked to check in on Covid app or give any details. No visible covid track and trace scan seen available. Service was appalling. Every time we wanted a drink and even to order food we had to find a member of staff and ask. We had to ask twice to order food. As well as this being very poor service this does not comply with covid rules of being served at your table as we were constantly wondering around trying to find staff. Really not good enough. To make this even worse I was told by a friend the next day they automatically add 12.5% to the bill for service!! Apparently it is on the bottom of the menu in very small writing. When we asked to check the bill after our meal which was on a hand held electronic device held by staff, the staff member read out the bill but no 12.5% service charge was mentioned. We really shouldn't have paid this for such bad service. Having known we would of asked for it to be taken off the bill. Don't mind paying for service but there was no service here. The only part of this experience was that the food and drinks were excellent. Had the Seabass which was amazing.

We were staying in a near by yurt retreat and decided to wander to the village and grab a bite to eat. Been a northerner the prices did make me stutter a little but once the meal was presented I never looked back. We both had the haddock and chips and it was all cooked to perfection. We were hoping to have a pudding but the fish alone filled us up. A very friendly atmosphere, great staff and an all round great pub. We would definitely recommend and go back on our next retreat stay.

If you really do want to forget about the virus and avoid adapting to the new normal then the lovely Lord Poulett Arms is the place for you! A gorgeous pub with rooms and a nicely composed small menu. The food is well prepared and tastes good, if not remarkable. But......and the most massive of buts...... they are operating as if they had never heard of COVID. Other than very nice Bramley hand sanitisers dotted around and open windows there is no evidence of compliance with protection measures. Tables might be 2m apart but those seated at them aren’t. Staff are very up close and personal when serving and clearing. Food is carried uncovered from the kitchen past customers standing. We had to endure a number of groups of people waiting for their table and standing by ours as they did so. The bar is open and customers are wandering around to and from. There is NO social distancing here at all. We felt really uncomfortable and unsafe. A huge contrast to everywhere else we have dined. The staff are all young so maybe they feel safe operating as they are. There are plenty of other pubs and restaurants who are really making an effort and they are the places deserving of our custom.

We are trying to achieve exactly what you say in your first sentence. A feel of normality amongst the abnormality. Behind the scenes we have implemented every sensible protocol including deep cleaning when the pub is now shut on Mondays and Tuesdays. We ask all our guests many of whom are local to follow our clear rules (and these are on clear signage) which are all in line with, and many go much further than, current government guidelines. We update these every week and may indeed move to masks soon. Sometimes guests will not observe our rules and we do our best to remind everyone (including our highly trained staff) of the requirements we must work together to achieve. In the end you did not feel comfortable and therefore we have failed you, but we trying every single day to get the balance between an enjoyable experience and keeping everyone safe.

Having booked our table several weeks ago - we were looking forward to our meal here this evening. On arrival, we were told we were sitting outside on the Terrace. Had it been a warm Summer evening , I have no doubt it would have been lovely. I am shocked to think that they assumed that anyone could enjoy a meal sitting outside on a cold Autumn evening! What is even more disappointing is that we had not been advised of this at the time of booking our table. We were told we could wait for any cancellations inside the pub - needless to say, as we were so cold, we decide to leave.

My family and I came here for dinner last night. We had 5 clean plates and all raved about how nice our meals were. It was nice to have different options for vegetarians- not just mushroom risotto!!! The puddings were also very tasty. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the menus and it's good to know the staff get 100% of the tips.

This was a perfect place to come for dinner on our first night in the area. We both had the fish platter and fish of the day which were incredible and beautifully presented. Our desserts (the skillet cookie and mascarpone cheesecake cream) were also delicious. The staff were super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu - they made us feel so welcome from the moment we walked in. Couldn’t recommend enough!

We ate at this restaurant the first night of our stay in the associates hotel. It was a little but more expensive than I would normally pay for pub food, but the quality was worth it. One of us had pork belly which was incredibly tender and juicy, and I had the truffle mac and cheese which was heavenly. We loved the decor of the place and the open fire made it very cosy. Would definitely recommend !

First time visiting this pub/restaurant. They had a large-pre wedding booking and, unfortunately, service suffered. We waited 45 minutes between finishing main course and ordering desert, despite me trying to grab staff attention. Their 12.5% service charge was deducted from the bill, which was a fair outcome. It would have been better for them to acknowledge delays during the meal, really. Food was good; had a trout starter, which was marred by too many flowers and greenery - the trout was buried in it all, yet should have been the star of the show. Defo style over substance. Highlight was some lovely gluten free fish and chips, although I would have expected triple cooked chips in a restaurant of this quality. Disappointed after hearing so many good things about this place, I have to say.

In the middle of a picturesque Village you’ll find The Lord Poulett Arms This Inn has wonderful gardens at the rear and all the character and charm of an old English pub. We stayed in Room 5, which is their signature room which has a large bath in the middle of the room and and a separate shower and toilet room The decor was lovely and the most comfortable bed gave us a really nice sleep and we woke up refreshed for our next adventure. Our evening meal was amazing and I nearly reordered another starter as this was so tasty and full of flavour Our mains were the highlight of our week away so far and the chefs cook the most wonderful meals, full of flavour and cook to perfection I had the steak and chips which was amazing and my wife had their fish and chips, which she loved We weren’t sure which wine to have, so the barmaid let us try a few samples, before we chose a nice bottle of sparkling white wine From the moment you enter the Inn, all the staff are really friendly and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble, upon arrival we were given freshly cooked shortbread, which was a really nice touch This was perfect for our romantic getaway and we can’t thank the staff enough for their kindness and helpfulness. I have to say that the customer service is the best so far of our break away and we felt really welcomed and looked after during our stay, can’t wait to come back in the future and this is place you must try !

We arrived late, hot and frazzled! The staff were enormously understanding and welcoming ("don't worry about your reservation time, have a drink in the garden and unwind from your journey"). The food was delicious and beautifully presented (the Cornish lobster was worth every penny) and well priced in terms of the quality. We stayed the night in a room that had every imaginable extra, including a thermos of fresh milk left outside your door for tea in the morning. The beds were comfortable, the room immaculately clean. The real highlight were the staff, who went above and beyond to make us feel like cherished locals, rather than the one night stopovers we were. The Lord Poulett Arms will now be a regular stopover for us.

We are new to the area and wanted a nice local gastro pub, how lucky we were to find the Lord Poulett was so close by. We have had Sunday lunch here which was exquisite - they do fabulous free bar snacks on a Friday too. Every time we have visited we have loved the food, the vibe and the staff are all extremely attentive and friendly. I have no hesitation recommending this gorgeous pub to anyone. In a nutshell top quality food, reasonably priced, imaginative menus and great drinks/wine list. Friends stayed here en route back from a very expensive stay at a Michelin hotel in Cornwall early in Jan and said the rooms and breakfast were better than they had just paid a fortune for.
