We booked for Sunday Lunch on the hope that there was availability. Sean emailed back the same day and kindly booked us in. When we arrived, there was a traditional, cosy bar and we were shown through to a beautiful restaurant area which has the most stunning views of the countryside and Alfred’s Tower. Our waitress was amazing and they had prepared a menu for my son who has allergies. The service was exceptional and the food was fantastic: Hot and delicious. I would happily eat there every week. I saw that some people thought it was expensive but for excellent quality food with great staff and a lovely atmosphere I was happy to pay £20 per head and then drinks.

A rare find. Warm and welcoming service and excellent traditional pub grub. We did steak night one night which was amazing, delicious rump steak and chips and a dessert all for under £20. We also ate here the night before and had great pizza and a lovely hake main course, staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly

We enjoyed the lunch. There were limited vegan and vegetarian dishes on the menu. The waiter however told us that the chef would adapt the menu if we required. When we ordered the vegan burger the waiter ensured that vegan coleslaw was prepared. I asked for a vegetarian starter in a larger main meal sized portion. This was superb. One of our group ordered the pulled pork: excellent. The fish and chips were served with home made tartar sauce and thrice cooked chips. The fish was somewhat disappointing: rather dry and the batter ordinary and heavy. The service was excellent. Was disappointed that the neighbouring farm cider and apple juice was not available.

Hello there, Sorry the fish was disappointing, we'll ensure that is remedied. You were dis-appointed that we did not have our village cider, while Oliver Dowding makes cider behind the pub, we do have a range of ciders and apple juice from Southdown Cider, made by Rob Whale. This is also made here in the village, so I think we had that one ticked? Thank you for your positive remarks and we hope to see you again in the future. Yours aye Sean O'C

We heard this was a good place to eat. In our visit we found it quite brightly lit and modern inside, with a large restaurant which on our was too hot and humid to sit in. Slightly Seventies style - not what we were expecting. The outside terrace however was very nice. We had to ask a few times for the menu but food arrived promptly and was absolutely fine. Note the prices are a little higher than most pubs in the area. The main disappointment was in trying to pay. We asked three different waiting staff members for the credit card machine and spent maybe fifteen minutes trying to sort this out. In fairness the last waitress was apologetic and did bring the machine without delay.

Thank you for your review, don't get your seventies style, but Aho we have our opinions? Glad you liked the terrace and the food and I'm sorry we didn't get your bill sorted a little swifter. I'll do some training on that. Yours aye Sean O'C

We planned a "Somerset Sojourn" of four nights away visiting gardens in the area, and picked the Seedhouse Air B&B in Shepton Montague (very good, highly recommend). The Montague Inn therefore became our "Local" over the weekend and we visited for evening drinks, an evening dinner, and a Sunday Roast. Each time we entered we received a warm and cheery welcome and great service throughout. My wife was pleased there was Butcombe IPA Zero on draught (she cannot drink alcohol, but loves a decent beer) and I enjoyed several glasses of their House Red, which was very quaffable. The food was very good on both occasions - no nonsense, sensible portions, great quality, and reasonable prices. The serving staff were friendly and attentive, chef was happy to tweak my meals to adapt to my needs, and the general vibe of the place was just what you would hope for at a local pub! We hope to return in the Spring and will definitely eat and drink here again - thoroughly recommended. Thank You Sean and Team!

We had booked a table for eight of us and on arrival were welcomed by the landlord and shown to our table. The waitresses were very professional and our drinks were ordered from the table as we browsed the menu. On arrival of our drinks we were ready to order food and did so with the friendly waitress. The atmosphere in the restaurant was calm, friendly and homely. We were situated near the window overlooking the lovely open view at the back of the pub. There was outside seating available as well. Our lunches arrived, beautifully prepared, cooked and presented - my choice was confit of duck which was very tasty and nutritious. We all very much enjoyed our lunches and look forward to returning.

We enjoyed the Christmas Party Menu on a busy Saturday evening; Sean and his team looked after us exceptionally well. Everyone agreed the food was superb, the staff were attentive and the whole evening was a great success. We could not fault a thing from the original booking to the event itself.

Enjoyed a lovely dinner for two recently. Drove from Wincanton. Short drive out into countryside, pretty easy to find with satnav. Booked ahead. Bar area seemed busy with diners and drinkers though we were seated in the large ish restaurant which was less so. In any event we enjoyed the food (mains - lamb pudding and rump steak cooked to wife's taste- both tasty followed by bread and butter puds from the specials board). Staff were very pleasant and efficient. Nice welcome at bar when we first arrived from female staff member who promptly took our drinks order then showed us to our table. Nice atmosphere in restaurant, albeit quieter than the bar area.

Very disappointed . The roast dinners were cold, I like undercooked vegetables but you needed a saw to get through the carrots and parsnips . We didn’t really feel welcome, felt we were treated as the last booking then we can pack up attitude. Saying that, I left a substantial tip as I have worked in the restaurant business for many years and feel it is fair for staff to have some sort of recognition . No thank you for tip , and when I was asked how was your meal I said it could have been hotter the only response was a laugh. Will not be recommending or returning anytime soon .

We stopped here for lunch on our way from Bruton, Somerset to Higher Bockhampton, Dorset. The owner Sean kindly sat us on the terrace without a reservation. We had a gorgeous Sunday roast on a warm sunny day so it was a perfect place to be. The waiter in training was a young boy who was very sweet. I was happy with all three of my choices for lunch as was my husband. I had the mushroom soup which was very good, pork roast and for dessert the strawberry soup with a frozen clotted cream pyramid in the centre. Yummy!

Some friends and I stayed close to this pub. On route to our cottage, my partner and I found this pub. After travelling for over 3 hours we stopped with our doggo to grab a bite to eat. We were not disappointed. The burgers were amazing with chilli jam. The staff and owner were very friendly and they allow dogs, with water bowls on hand for our pooch. In fact we enjoyed the food and atmosphere so much we returned not a week later with our friends.

We booked a table for 5 at 7.30 on a Tuesday in August and it was lively when we arrived but the tables were well spaced and we were seated and served with drinks quickly. The weather wasn’t great but we could see there were beautiful views from the deck at the back. The food was really good. Excellent burgers, duck confit and beef curry. Unfortunately the service was rather slow and we found out at the end that they were let down by at the last minute which would have been good to know or have the waits acknowledged at the time. By 8.45 it was almost empty but no one had come to see if we wanted dessert so we asked at the bar and fortunately the kitchen was still open and the puddings were great. I think the service was unfortunate and one of those things and better communication would have been helpful but the food was excellent and the setting was lovely so well worth a visit!

We booked into the Montague Inn following recommendations, We had booked a table but forgot to say we had two dogs with us. The host Sean and staff were very accommodating and switched tables to allow the dogs to sit with us. Everybody was very friendly and they have taken precautions to ensure your safety during Covid 19 as you would expect. Wednesday night was Steak Night special with Lemon Meringue Pie at £15 was great value for money. The wine list was excellent value for money too. This is a gem of a place and rest of the menu was just as tantalising. We can recommend the cheese board with local cheeses.

A delightful, warm and welcoming pub, my favourite - there are two wood burners & so you immediately feel the warmth when you enter on a chilly winter day - just what you want. It's also friendly and in my opinion the food delicious and beautifully presented. If only other pubs could learn from this one - how to provide good service and 'delight' the customer. Sadly, this level of customer service is not the 'norm' for most.

Having recently moved to the area and already bored with the standard offerings we were really impressed with the diversity and quality of the menu and had 3 seriously good plates of food and an equally tasty dessert. Service and staff were faultless; only tiny niggle was that away from the fires it was a little draughty but hey we could have moved. Will definitely be back Oh yes; the Covid notices were really sympathetic and friendly
