Having visited on Sat 18th January for food and drinks ended up very poorly. We took a puppy and a very old dog, this has been a regular dog friendly haunt of ours. On this occasion we took our seat and set up a tab. We had an area of the bar to ourselves. A family joined us with children who played with the puppy. Then another family with more children joined them, we moved table to allow them more room and give dogs space from kids. Then another family joined with more kids. This then descended into what resembled a playground. The puppy was stood on twice even though I kept asking for a little care. On the third occasion we requested it would stop but didn't. We cancelled our food and Dennis did all he could to try make it easier but at this point we decided to leave. Some of the group had left but the remainder started to make snide comments( dont bring dogs in ) ( and shout (everyone be carefull not to stand on the dogs and laugh). I lost my temper and we attempted to leave. On leaving we received 2 fingered salutes and sarcastic comments, again I lost my cool. This has been a regular place for food for myself for 13 years and is branded dog friendly we left and attended the Swan With Two Necks with another couple wo left because of the kids running round and they waited 15 minutes and wasn't served for a drink

We have just returned from a cheeky early supper here. We were both astounded by the food, we ordered fish and chips and were quite prepared to wait,as it was Friday night and quite busy. When the food arrived only 15 minutes later the fish was nearly escaping off the plate it was so big. We agreed that we have never had such a fabulous plate of fish and chips, it was piping hot and absolutely delicious. We will be returning soon!

This is a belated review but still worthy nonetheless! Myself & my family booked a table during the eat out to help out scheme. Unfortunately there were complications for the restaurant the night we booked, with customers sitting at reserved tables and ending food service early, we were unable to dine after travelling 30 mins and arriving early. It was so busy, and the staff were rushed off their feet - it wouldn’t have been a suitable time to ask to speak to management, so we drove home disappointed. However, the next day I emailed the restaurant with my concerns having booked in advance. I was emailed back with sincere apologies from Manager Elaine and she kindly explained the issues they faced the day before and I completely appreciated the honesty. The situation was quickly resolved and I was offered a discount should we wish to book again. And I’m so glad we did! A couple of weeks go by, my family & I travel back to ye old windmill with high hopes that we will get to try their home cooked meals. The restaurant felt a lot calmer, and to be honest, I’m glad we had waited until after the eat out to help out scheme ended as it was a completely different atmosphere. We each ordered different meals, and all finished with clean plates! The menu had so much choice, I went for the Steak & Guinness pie at the recommendation from one of the waitresses there. Hats off to the chef’s as we all agreed to return soon, just to try everything else on the menu. PS. You must order the onion rings! They’re huge!!! Thank you to Elaine & staff for wonderful customer service, and making us feel so welcome

We have been to the Windmill many many times over the last 20 odd years, but unfortunately they have not managed the post COVID opening at all well.it is a shame that you cannot rate 0. A family member Pre booked a meal for 4 households on 4 separate tables as agreed in advance with the Windmill. Upon arrival our tables were not available straight away which was fine. We were asked if we would like to get a drink in the bar. After ordering drinks and waiting in the bar we were asked to go and stand outside as there were too many people in the bar. We were made to feel unwelcome as this was not our problem as our table was now 15 minutes late and were not dressed to be stood outside. Eventually we were invited in to the restaurant upstairs however, this was not to the 4 tables we had booked, but 3 tables which required a couple of households to be mixed. Personally we did not have a problem with this However, when we come to order, the very rude waiter would not take separate bills for each family and would only accept a bill per table. When we tried to explain the situation the reply was ‘well if your going to be like that I don’t have to serve you’. Upon his poor attitude it was decided by us all that we would leave the establishment. Whilst walking down the stairs we passed someone who we knew who said that they had not booked and had taken a chance. It appears that the Windmill are putting profits before people and are not abiding by their booking system. This is a total failure by the management and would avoid booking a table as this does not guarantee a table. Thank you Windmill for ruining a family celebration Shocking attitude.

Well I was disappointed by the state of the tables bear in mind they have had over three months to clean up the place the tables were dirty and sticky. The seat were sticky to your fingers when you pulled them up to the table also chewing gum underneath. Two people had a portion of onion rings I think they were pulled straight out of the fat and plonked on the plate the oil dripped out of them and the meal itself wasn’t much better. But the worst was the gents toilet was disgusting the smell was overpowering and made me feel sick. Very disappointed considering the time they’ve had to clean the place.

Well I take great offence for you to criticise the cleanliness of the whole of the pub. I have a 5 star health rating and you could eat your food of the floor. I have 4 cleaners in a day scrubbing from top to bottom of the pub. Let me just educate you on sanitising cleaner after a while it does sometimes feel sticky as it does when you use it on your hands. We have just done thousands of meals throughout August and my staff are on their knees and tbh very upset by your comments in these difficult times everyone has found themselves in

Have been a customer of The Windmill for over Thirty years and have never really had a bad meal. So when the government introduced the half priced meals we booked a table. Problems started when our group turned up and they had given our table to another group. We were then given another table near an open door , so we were all cold with the breeze blowing through. I asked them to close it, which they did, only to keep opening it. Then ordered our meal which took well over an hour to arrive, and when it did what a disappointment. Two of us ordered the ribeye steak with pepper sauce, which when it arrived we were told they had run out of pepper sauce, this was seven o clock in the evening??????. The steaks were burned on the outside and raw in the middle and riddled with fat , not ribeye in my opinion. The other meals were a burger ( burned) and a lasagne ( tasteless) . Nobody hardly ate anything, absolutely awful. If this an attempt to get people eating out again, The Windmill as failed big time , not worth anything never mind half price. I won’t be coming back, and I warn people turning up to expect any decent edible food .

Have been visiting the Windmill for several years and always enjoyed good, hearty, home cooked food. Came for a family meal in April, first meal since the place changed hands. While I agree the old menu was in need of a tweak, the new menu just didn't do it for us. No steak & guineas pie, no cottage pie, no much loved Windmill burgers and no specials board which always had a varied choice of alternatives to the regular menu. Not to mention no more hearty sandwiches & baguettes. We had 2 very disappointed grandchildren when they found no pasta dishes on the menu, they used to love the meatballs & pasta. We opted for burgers expecting the usual large offerings with generous portions of side salad & chips. We waited over 30 mins for our meals despite the place being almost empty. Then what we got was dry burgers in small buns with a handful of lukewarm oven chips on the plate, no side salad, coleslaw etc. The children reluctantly agreed to have fish fingers, chips & beans with 3 side orders of Mac n Cheese to satisfy their pasta cravings. Their meals were lukewarm with a tiny ramekin of baked beans and the fish fingers were akin to Asda smart price products. My son's side order of onion rings (again sadly NOT the infamous Windmill giant onion rings) eventually arrived when he'd almost finished his meal and despite asking for the children's Mac n Cheese sides at the same time as the onion rings, they finally came out when we'd all finished our meals so they were sent back. More disappointment with the disappearance of the homemade cheesecake but we opted for other choices on the menu. Again a long wait during which we had to ask how long our desserts would be they finally arrived and were ok but not sure what the long wait was about when they were clearly pre packed, frozen products that were whacked in a microwave. Same can be said about the main meals. At no point did anyone come and check if everything was ok with our meals, another Windmill tradition gone to the wall. The Windmill has always matched it's countryside location with with the type of home cooked food that you'd expect in a country pub. Sadly now the food is what you'd get if you popped into a Wetherspoons, or similar type of establishment, in a town centre. The Windmill is a country pub, people do not just drop in for a quick bite whilst doing a bit of shopping. People drive to visit this place, walkers, cyclists & dog walkers visit after a bracing walk on the common and this is not the kind of food they want. I accept that it's a new era and things change with the arrival of new owners but you need to remember what the Windmill pub is to it's regular customers and maybe you need to start taking onboard what those people want because it's certainly not meals that look & taste like someone has been and filled up a trolley at Iceland. Your recent reviews quite obviously reflect this.

Lovely pub in a beautiful setting. Unfortunately the food is not up to standard. Everything comes with pale undercooked chips cooked in Luke warm oil. The price of the meals do not reflect the poor standard of the food. I was not expecting high quality gastro style food but at least well cooked bar style food. This would be such an amazing pub and eatery if they were to up the standard of their food!

Ye Olde Windmill at Gentleshaw was one of our safe bets over 20, or more, years, Somewhere you could go for a well kept pint and proper food at a reasonable price. The staff worked hard, and it was always decent and unpretentious, Some six months or so go they were taken over by Red Cat and we awaited with baited breath to see what would happen. In between things seemed largely ok – the wines were south of paint stripper but the food stayed fairly good and the beer was good. Tonight we saw the new vision. The menu was much more extensive (OK that would be an improvement) but the choices were not good – or even mediocre. In my case I can always adapt so went for pulled pork chilli con carne. My wife tried the pie of the day Chicken and mushroom (they said it was). Lots of kids now which was great for families. We moved around to get a better table. The food arrived. My Chilli was with a pile (yes truly a pile ) of Jalapenos on the plate and bland rice with pulled pork and “chilli”. Little meat taste and a slimy sort of non-descript texture. The huge mountain of Jalapenos was moved to one side. Basically inedible – but being from Yorkshire I tried – and regretted it later. My wife’s Chicken and mushroom pie was odd. The pie itself (quite small with sides and bottom of one consistency and top like a (tiny) dustbin lid, was a dry consistency inside with little in the way of chicken or mushroom. It came with an inappropriate generic “gravy” to try to moisten the affair – which was rejected. Watered Castrol is not what we wanted here. Making the inedible slide down does not help things. The pastry (sides) you could eat was tasteless and dry above and a Mary Berry soggy bottom below. None you would want to eat. As for the lid – save your teeth! As chains take over decent pubs (in this case Red Cat or dead cat if you eat the food) seems to be the way of things but we really want just honest decent food at sensible prices. We seem to have lost that at the Windmill. As I say Another one bites the dust.

We have been regular lunchtime visitors for a few years and have always enjoyed our visits We visited today and found there was a new menu and were most disappointed to find that the ploughman's lunch, cheese and ham baguettes were no longer available. These had been replaced by 3 wraps, one being "mock lamb" whatever that is?? Why is it vegan/vegetarian food has to be named after/look like and taste like the thing it's not supposed to be?? My wife ordered the fishcakes and I opted for the chicken and bacon wrap. A short while later we were informed there were no fishcakes available not a good start for the first day of a bank holiday weekend We both had the chicken and bacon wrap, which had plenty of filling and were value for money but I'm not a great lover of wraps and would have preferred a sandwich or baguette It's a shame the original favourites have been removed from the menu we will still pop in for a lunchtime drink but unfortunately we will not be dining which is a shame Bring back the ploughman's!!

Used this place as the go to for family birthdays and general get togethers for over 20 years. It’s safe to say we won’t be visiting again. We arrived little after 12pm and were first in the restaurant. 2 of our party ordered fish and chips. Around 5 minutes later we were told they didn’t have any cod. Scampi was the only fish alternative so they ordered that instead. When it came out the plates were cold and the scampi only just warm. 2 others ordered the buttermilk chicken burger from the main menu. It wasn’t buttermilk, instead an over cooked breaded chicken burger. Another party member ordered the steak and ale pie. The beef inside was tough and went mostly uneaten. The best part of all of the meals was the chips and cheesy garlic bread, although the garlic bread came out quite a while after we had started eating so I’m guessing they had forgotten about it. We were served by a nice young girl, I believe her name was Megan, and she couldn’t have been more apologetic and maintained professionalism throughout our visit, unlike Zack, who asked us how the food was and when he was told it was mediocre, gave a dirty look, said nothing and just turned and walked off. That was the final decider that we won’t ever return to what was once our favourite meeting place. They took 2 meals off the cost of the bill which was nice of them, but we would much rather have just had a nice family lunch.

A family birthday meal, all safely handled. The food was very good (one small hiccup which was swiftly remedied) and we were made to feel very welcome. Beers were excellent as usual - a pub that can serve well kept good quality ales - whatever next!! The staff were very thorough and on the ball, all making for a lovely night. Even the vegetarian had a very good meal which was a rarity.

We had friends to take out for Sunday lunch and heard good reports of this place. On entering the stuff didn’t know where we were sitting and when they finally sat us on a table a man shouted over to us ‘No upstairs!’ Very rude. We weren’t told where the stairs were so when we finally found them we went up. The girl behind the bar said we could sit anywhere. We picked our table and sat down. We waited for someone to come over but no one did. Finally we asked and the bar girl shouted it’s bar service. We ordered drinks one of which was NOT a strawberry cider but a black current cordial and soda. At this point I wanted to leave. I got up to ask for a menu at the bar and the girl pointed to the menus on the stand and said ‘You have to get them yourself’ Rude again. We looked at the menu and as it was Sunday we were going to have a roast. It just said Sunday Roast with all the trimming. No mention of what meats were on offer or the selection of veg. Up I got again to ask and was told chicken, pork or beef. Finally we decided and ordered Sausage and Mash, Steak Pie and 2 Roast beef. When it arrived the sausages were bland and boring with no flavour (think they were frozen) and one beef was cold (which I sent back). The other beef was so tough my friend couldn’t get her knife through it. It really was like the bottom of your shoes. Her cabbage was chewy, stringy and limp and the peas were hard. No flavour in any of it. The second beef arrived back piping hot (from the microwave) but once I put a mouthful of beef in my mouth I could have been eating anything tough. No flavour and completely over cooked. This just put me off totally so I left it. The pie apparently was quite nice. We did mention this to the man behind the bar when we paid and he reduced our bill. I’m sorry to say I won’t be back here again.

my partner took me here tonight for a celebratory meal as I gad just passed my exam. The steaks here used to be to die for. We came just before the coronavirus pandemic and thought it was just a one off, having a bad meal, but tonight was even worse. My partner chose chicken with a lemon and thyme flavouring. He had to ask for gravy but it was just plain chicken no flavour and not cooked properly. I asked for medium and no blood for my steak but it was rare and bloody. Bought tge chicken and the steak home for the dogs as that's all it was fit for. Never will I darken the doorstep of the windmill again £ 50 down the drain as far as I am concerned. Thanks for spoiling my celebration 🍾
