The fish here is really tasty, with good portions, been there many times, eat in and take away. Staff are very friendly and efficient

The last two visits our cod was overcooked and dry. I suspect they were pre-cooked and then finished off quickly in the oil before serving. We used to wait for the fish to be cooked, now the wait is less than a minute which says...everything. Such a shame from the excellent meal that used to be served here!More
Best fish and chips we've been to. Consistently good and reasonably priced for an eat-in restaurant. Not the cheapest fish and chips but definitely the best and worth the extra.
I’ve used the takeaway 3 times so far this year. Each time the cod and chips has been excellent, easily the best in the area. However, as stated in other reviews, the deeply unpleasant woman on the till has to be seen to be believed....Harsh, rude, barks rules and tells you where to stand. No sign of a smile at any point and seems deeply unhappy in her work. She’s definitely in the wrong job, unless she’s there for comedy purposes.More
I have been having regular takeaways from here for a few years and I have to say this the best. I have tried others nearer to where I live but they did not get anywhere near McDermotts in terms of quality and taste. I am...a pescatarian and can detect if the same cooking oil has been used to cook burgers ect, McDermotts must use separate oil as the fish is always crisp and fresh. I have tried the Restaurant and that was fine.More
After hearing all the wonderful great reviews of this place from lots of people, I have been desperate to try the food from here. Greeted by a very rude member of staff! Wearing my mask I ordered our meal, she abruptly told me she couldn’t...understand/hear me, and to speak up. She then proceeded to be very rude to my dad when he paid for the overpriced meal for 5. I observed her customer service skills for the next 5-10 mins while waiting, it was the same for every customer that went in. Same abrupt tone. It really seemed like she didn’t want to be there. Fish was ok but the chips were awful, we’ve had better. I wouldn’t bother going back.More
First time using as people of given such good feed back on this chips shop have to say very disappointed chips uncooked savaloys hard and my daughter found a hair in her fish not worth the money at all would not return again
Arrived here unplanned on a Saturday night, party of 4, we were seated and asked for our orders. 3 of the party ordered fish and chips, I wasn't overly hungry so asked to order just chips and curry sauce. I was told I couldn't and...had to order more as they have a £10 minimum spend per head? This was awkward and uncomfortable and under sufferance I then said I would have a fish cake too. Food arrived and was good but was put off by the weird, awkward rule. We asked for the bill, paid and left. I checked the bill later that evening and had been charged for 2 fishcakes but only had one? When we ate here the last time and we were charged for 2 pies we never had either? Sloppy and unorganised service, especially when it comes to totalling the bill.More
4 of us revisited the Selsdon area where I grew up in the 1960’s . This establishment was recommended to us as the area’s premier Fish & Chip Restaurant . Well I think it was actually underestimated as it turns out to be the best...Fish & Chips I have ever eaten in my Life . The Fish was lightly crispy and extremely fresh . It had that fluffy texture . I actually could go on and on about this place but please just go and try it for yourself . You will not be disappointed & the Staff are amazing ..More
I popped in here the other day for a takeaway and it was the first time in a while that I’ve been disappointed. The chips weren’t their usual, crispy on the outside self. It was a shame, as this is what makes their chips stand...out from other establishments. They were cooked but very pale in colour too. The fish was beautiful though - hence the extra star. Also the cheese and onion “slice” - not pie was absolutely awful. It wasn’t even crispy and was just like mush. At £2.80 I would avoid this at all costs if you’re thinking of getting it.More
