Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

In simple - I really like this place and love returning! My partner and I live just outside of Kingston and if we fancy a meal out, Steins is always one at the top of our list. As someone who very rarely eats German food, Steins is always such a treat. The food is traditional and fresh, and the portion sizes are massive! The staff are so friendly and welcoming - we forgot to book the last time we visited and the restaurant was full, so the waitress took my number and called me as soon as a table became available, reserving a table for us especially. Would 100% recommend to anyone.

Such kind staff and excellent service. I requested a naked schnitzel i.e without breadcrumbs and the staff were so wonderful and tasty. My friends who got the regular schnitzel were impressed and the fresh lemon was an excellent accopmient. Lovely wine as per usual with a beautiful Riverside setting. Could not recommend highly enough.

Finally made our way to Stein's for a long overdue date night. I was a bit apprehensive going out for a meal but they've done a fantastic job at separating tables with panels and giving the tables a good clean between each sitting. The customer service was really good, and they did everything to make me feel safe. Kudos to the staff putting themselves at risk so that we can come out of our caves of comfortable hibernation after all those months of lockdown. The food exceeded my expectations. Very generous portions and really quite tasty. Impressed with the veggie schnitzel I had. I was afraid I would have to order chips and a salad as most places don't have a good veggie menu and it's difficult going out with meat eaters. All in all, I really recommend the place. Also, the beer was proper good!

We popped into Steins for a few pints on a lazy Sunday afternoon, but unfortunately it was the worst experience we have ever had at a bar or restaurant. As instructed, we scanned the menu from the QR code and ordered from the waiting staff. After a nice couple of hours enjoying the view with some snacks and beer, we came to pay the bill where the figure was far higher than the menu suggested. The beer listed at £3.90 with no other explanation is for a half not a pint, incredibly steep even for London! After showing the waiting staff the disparity between the bill and the menu on the ordering app, we were argued at rudely by the manager and eventually given several new bills. On the first revised bill the price was made nearly the same by inflating the price of the pretzels we ordered and only slightly altering the beer prices, on the next we were told that VAT wasnt added to the menu prices on just one type of beer (illegal under UK law). After a lengthy process where the manager was too busy to engage for 20 minutes at a time, we eventually paid more than the prices we were advertised due to the claim of having been served bottled beer rather than draught beer for some of our drinks. They need to fix their menu to be clearer, but even then the place will still be very overpriced and the management will still be rude - avoid.

My colleague & I called in the other evening during a trip down the Thames. We were not disappointed! Amazing Wiener Schnitzel cooked to perfection and genuine German lager made the visit very memorable. We were given an outside balcony position due to Covid restrictions which afforded us a marvellous view of the sailing boats from the local yacht club tacking across river. We will try their other restaurant in Richmond soon.

4 of us went for dinner before a visit to the theatre on a Saturday evening and the place was very busy. We waited a little longer for the food to be served than I would have wished but, as I have already said, they were very busy and we made it to the theatre on time. There were larger groups and family groups dining as well as couples and groups of friends. Having had a number of meals in Germany, this is what I would regard as a typical menu with many of may favourite German dishes. The Knuckle of pork was excellent and the schnitzel looked very good and was recommended by a diner on a table close to us. The portions were substantial. I don't think I could have managed three courses. Indeed I struggled to finish the main course. They were happy to swap the potato dumpling that my pork knuckle was supposed to come with for bratkartoffeln. There is a good beer menu with German beers (including weissbier) and there is a wine menu as well. The staff were helpful and friendly. I hope they will still be there once the country opens up for business again as I would certainly return. Probably better to book especially on a Saturday night.

Austrian and charming. Rustic and homely. We had a wonderful afternoon sitting on river eating Austrian food. We had a basket of bread including pretzels, rye etc Followed by Kaiser spaetzel (cheese noodles) and my daughter had sausage and mash potato. Followed by apple strudel. And we took some food home to freeze:)) I can tell you that the food was cooked from scratch because I saw all the apples, the flour and the German cheese arriving in the kitchen. The food was delicious. I would actually say I prefer this place to the Barnes Rick Stein. I am a great fan of Rick Stein and I can imagine that he would’ve been sitting on the river like ourselves laughing and enjoying the good food and views. We counted 22 swans. And for those of you who have children like myself I was quite glad that the entrance is at the front and not on the Riverside because although you can see the river - The Veranda is quite well rails so they can’t jump into the river Thames LOL:)) A great bonus We enjoyed the excellent views And I would like to add a tip… Make sure everyone orders different food so that you can try everything. It was truly authentically Austrian:)) The staff were dressed in Austrian outfits. And at least one of them spoke fluent in Austrian. It was a truly enjoyable afternoon. We didn’t book ahead and there was room. Everyone was delightful and everyone was having fun. Thank you very much to Staff and Rick Stein for such a wonderful time. We will definitely be returning again and again and again

We've been visiting Stein for ages, never had a bad experience and always been served promptly with a smile on the face from the staff. Menu is strong and doesn't change, that make you understand that even if the food is the same you always have a reason to come back and enjoy some quality time. Well done guys

Awful service from the start, waited to be shown to our table (we had booked), many staff ignoring us whilst we stood near the door (with a delightful view of the downstairs toilet). Then confusion about the menu, order using the app but menu not correct and my parents struggled to read it on the phone. Painfully slow service, had to ask several times for drinks (no drinks arrived in time for our main) then the bill, nearly £200 (with service charge already included, what a joke, what service). My father insisted on paying but i felt embarrassed as what we’d had was not worth that. Terrible, sort out your staffing issues Steins.

I have eaten here four of five times over the years and the food is / was always good. Unfortunately to day whilst the food was ok (sausage was cold) the service was not very good. I would have give. This restaurant 3 stars even with the poor service (they bought my wife’s food 20minutes after mine. Fed up of waiting i went to the bar to pay the bill and the waitress apologised for the earlier mistake and said she had given us a discount to make up for it. Such she did on checking the bill they had reduced the cost of my main by £4.99. But this is the brilliant bit they then charged me £6 for service. Don’t bother not what it used to be.

I am originally from Germany and haven’t been home in a very long time so I really fancied some lovely German food so we decided after having been to Steins before to travel 45 min to Kingston for a lovely family dinner out. We had mentioned when we booked that we’re having a 1 year old and will need a high chair . When the waiter had taken us to our table I was utterly shocked at the state of the high chair and floor underneath the table. There clearly had been a family for lunch before us which is fair enough and we all know how messy it can get with a child so I thought , let’s not make a big deal out of it and ask if any of the staff could quickly just clean the mess before we sat down . I happened to ask the manager who was close by if anyone would be able to clean the high chair and floor and OMG he had given me the dirtiest look as if I was being very out of order. He then passive aggressively wiped the tray of the high chair but never returned to clean the half eaten sausages on the floor . We ended up having dinner whilst the floor was covered with food. Non of the staff ever came back to clear the mess. It was disgusting and I’m not sure if we will be travelling again for 45 min to go to Steins . Very upsetting and also embarrassing as I know this is not up to German standard to what I’m used to !!!

We went as a family of 4 to celebrate my son's graduation. What an amazing evening. We had a selection of main courses, sausages from Munich, currywurst, roast pork, raclette, and the best pretzels ever. The beer was superb and we had x2 Steins of imported lager. Dessert was the best Apple Strudel I have tasted. Staff were lovely and a wonderful atmosphere. A really wonderful evening, the best all year, have booked again!

We were shopping in Kingston today, and wanted a nice lunch as it is our anniversary. Decided upon Stein’s after reading the reviews and fancying German food and beer. We were given a nice table next to the outdoor seating area, with river views. We ordered beers and pork schnitzel and it came quite quickly. Lovely cold beer, and our meals were huge. Really tasty salad, with a decent dressing, heaps of potato salad, and tender, tasty schnitzel. We were pleasantly surprised how good everything was, and will definitely return.

We arrived and after being ignored and barged past by some staff were shown to a table. We were pointed towards a QR code on the wall as if that was our interaction from now on. After a few attempts we could see the menu but although the site implied we could order from there, it wouldn’t work for us. We asked a waitress who told us it had always worked like this. When I questioned this she stormed off. We left. Not worth navigating their strange ways of working.
