This restaurant was recommended by the accommodation we stayed and to be fair we were not disappointed. The portion sizes were good and the good of a high standard. Service was good too. Only downside was that my main course was horrible. I had the grilled chicken and hock ham salad and it came looking horrible Presentation left a lot to be desired. They originally took my order wrong and I wished I have accepted the chicken burger originally offered ! The salad came with anchovies in it which was not mentioned on the menu. By the time my main came and was wrong the remainder of my party had eaten their mains so I did not bother ordering anything else. I had the cheese and biscuits for desert and to be fair there could have been more of a choice of cheese. We think about going back to this one if they could get the order and service right.

It was our first time at this pub and our first meal out after Lockdown. We had the deep-fried whitebait to start then pan-fried hake, roast beef and fish and chips. Each dish and every part of them was absolutely delicious and generous portions too. The pub is in the MOST stunning village of Whichford which was perfect for an amble around after lunch. We sat at a picnic table overlooking the village green. All well spaced out. A perfect Sunday lunch, thank you to 'The Norman Knight'!

We were the first to arrive in the restaurant and were safely (covid) seated and enjoyed drinks whilst studying the varied menu. Well behaved dogs are welcome.
We both had the Liver parfait + sour dough toast. Smooth and creamy with a delicious homemade chutney. The main course of dressed crab came with fries and salad, and I was very satisfied with an order of deliciously cooked scallops with king pawns and Caesar salad. Too full to try the desserts. Do try and visit if you are in the area, this is first class food cooked to perfection and served by wonderful staff. Thank you for a great evening.

Went with a friend as it had been recommended for good food. Lady who looked after us was lovely and very helpful. Three of us all ordered the the same, fish and chips. It came out and fish was hot but sadly that was the only thing, the chips and peas were lukewarm unsurprising as they were served on a cold plate. I told a member of staff and she took the plate away returning a short time later with the food on a piping hot plate. Unfortunately the food was still the same temperature, it had just been transferred to a hotter plate. I told the staff member and she offered to take it back again. I couldn’t see the point as I didn’t realise turning out hot food would be such a chore. I ended up paying nearly £15 for an ok piece of fish.

Firstly thank you for commenting on the staff being lovely and helpful. However, there are a few things we would like to address. On 3 separate occasions you were given the option to change your meal and you decided not to. You were happy to leave a generous tip, happy to stay a further good 30 minutes after your meal upon paying. At no point was any of this a chore for our staff who continued to smile and do their utmost to look after you. Upon looking at your previous reviews it appears you aren’t an easy person to please as it’s rare you have any good words to say for anyone. We are guessing you are just one of those keyboard warriors that can’t be helped!

We had a lovely meal at the Norman Knight on Tue 13 Jul 2021 (during the Covid restrictions). Food, drinks, service and Covid security were all top notch. Returned two days later and what a transformation; food & drinks still good but service and Covid security had gone out the window.
A girl (not clear if she was a customer or not) waltzed in without a mask, plonked herself down on the sofa next to our table and spent the next 15 minutes catching up on her social media. She seemed known to the staff. Another maskless woman then came in and joined her.
Whereas on Tuesday, the occasional outside drinker who strayed in from for any reason other than to visit the loo was politely turned back, we now saw drinkers wander in and order directly from the bar. One chap who realised he might be pushing his luck enquired, after ordering a bottle of wine, whether he should now wait for it to be delivered back at his table. The barmaid reassured him he was fine.
The staff were generally inattentive to us and other diners. We were up for deserts and coffees but by the time someone eventually got round to asking us if we wanted anything else we'd gone past it.
The only explanation I can think of is that on Tuesday there was a senior member of staff on duty (quite possibly the landlady) who was a real dynamo. She wasn't there on Thursday.
Such a disappointment on the last night of our holiday.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review.
We are happy you enjoyed your time with us on Tuesday and your kind comments regarding the food and drinks.
Unfortunately on Thursday we were unprepared for how busy the night was. I do apologise if we fell short on our service towards you.
We hope you will return in the near future and we will endeavour to make amends.

Very disappointing. We booked online and were asked if we wanted inside or out. We booked a table outside but asked what would happen if it was too cold/raining and were told “we will move you inside“. When we turned up it was too cold unless you wanted to eat in your coat and as it was an anniversary dinner and we wanted to relax, we asked for a table inside. The waitress rolled her eyes at us and then said there were no tables available inside. We said we had been told different on the phone, which was ignored - no apology, no acknowledgement, nothing. Very disappointed given we had travelled over an hour to visit.

Belated review (apologies). We stayed in Shipston-on-Stour back in March 2020 (at thatched cottage), the week before lockdown and we eat at the Norman Knight most days as the food, beer and service were all excellent. The food is just fantastic everything from one of the best Sunday lunches I have ever tasted (amazing cauliflower cheese), fish pie, crab salad, steak, through to delicious home made sweets. Highly recommend, we loved our stay.

Hi Allister,
Thanks for your belated review. It’s still just as much appreciated and lockdown has thrown us all out of sync. Hopefully is just around the corner. We loved having you all here to dine with us and we hope to see you again another time when you are in the area. Thanks again

What a find , having been on a tour to the Cotswold Gin distillery, lunch was very much needed. A warm welcome and a fab choice of menu . Staff were more than welcoming and friendly. I even stepped in to rescue Dillon the local escapee black Labrador. With all that in hand , lunch arrived .
I chose mussels- yum
My husband went for white bait and the fish soup all presented very well.
The pub is having some work done , but that didn’t affect anything apart from loo’s outside, but no matter
Would love to come and try the glamping which is offered and try out the Shepherds Hut as recommended.
Great find would recommend and would visit again
Thanks for a fabulous start to my birthday weekend 🥂

The title says it all really, all three lady waitresses were very helpful, polite and chatty. The food was delicious, I had the hake risotto and it was without a doubt one of the best dishes I’ve ever eaten.
I understand as it’s a summers evening and with COVID about, it’s nice to have doors open. However the evening we visited it was overcast and extremely windy and we we’re uncomfortably cold.
Apart from that a very positive experience.

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for taking the time to write such a lovely review. We are glad the hake risotto was one of the best meals you’ve ever tasted.
With regards to covid we obviously have to make sure everything is as open and airy as possible atm to be a safe environment for our guests and staff alike but hoping as things ease further we can quickly get back to more normal times.
We hope to welcome you back again another time.

Had dinner at The Norman Knight on the 10th & 11th of March 2020. Had the ribeye steak the first night, it was delicious, cooked exactly as I asked. My wife had the steak pie from the "specials board" and said how lovely it was, I ordered it the following night and I must say it was probably the best homemade pie I've ever tasted.
The Real ales were very good and would strongly recommend the Brewers Blend from Hanlons Brewery.
The staff were really helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble.

Wow what an amazing meal! The roast dinners were huge and to such a high standard. The pie also looked incredible. Obviously due to COVID these meals were collected with strict social distance measures in place and everything was very organized. We will definitely be ordering again. Thank you Amber and your team.

Pre-booked a table on a very busy Bank Holiday Monday lunchtime. We had a table outside under a canopy (all suitably spaced out). Even though the staff were very busy, service was very good and food and drinks all served very promptly. Excellent goats cheese tart followed by hake with a risotto which was fantastic. There seemed to be a very good fish and seafood twist to the menu. Just to note if you are eating outside then you will probably need to use the portaloos around the side of the pub. The Eat Out to Help Out scheme also made lunch extremely good value. Would definitely recommend and return.

Hi Anita,
Thank you for your full five star review it’s very much appreciated. We are glad that you enjoyed everything and felt comfortable with the environment due to the social distancing side of things. We do a lot of fish being one of our chefs specialities so it’s always very popular. The portaloos are currently only due to building work at the rear so purely a temporary measure. We look forward to you returning.

We came on a break to the cotswolds as our Italy trip was cancelled and came here on the first night - it cheered us right up!
The service and food were incredible and if we lived closer we would definitely be returning again!
We had the mussels and white bait to start followed by pork belly and steak pie and we were so full after. The food is so tasty and whilst its not the cheapest it is worth it. Would definitely reccomend!

Huki & BI went here for dinner, we had pre-booked and would recommend doping so as they get pretty busy.
I had the asparagus for starter and the market fish, plaice when I went, for main, they were great as I wanted different veg and potato and they said no problem and gave me what I wanted.
The food was delicious and exceedingly well cooked. The staff were fantastic, helpful and friendly. But I ate as fast as could and did not want to stay for dessert as it was absolutely freezing, maybe invest in some outside heaters as it ruined what could have been an amazing experience

Thank you for your review.
I’m so pleased you enjoyed the food.
We had a month of outside dining, I appreciate it was cold as the evening went on but we were closed for total of 9 months. So buying heaters was just a little too extravagant for us.
We are inside now, and the weather is good. So I hope you will return and have the full experience of The Norman Knight.

The food was excellent if a bit overpriced. Quality presentation and taste were first rate. Seated at a table near us and the bar, there was a girl with a dog. A man was perched on a stool at the bar and he also had a dog. The 2 dogs were barking at each other for several minutes making conversation impossible. The staff seemed amused by the dogs but should have asked one of the dog owners to move away. Selfish dog owners and thoughtless staff not appreciating the requirements for a meal to be eaten in an enjoyable manner.
I am a pescatarian and ordered scallops with a Caesar salad. Food beautifully presented and scallops excellent. Very surprised to find ham in the salad however which I then had to dissect out. Pointed this out to the waitress who said I should have read the disclaimer on the back of the menu stating that not all ingredients of the meal are described on the menu. Refused to point out my issue to the chef. I think a pescatarian should be able to order a fish item confident that it does not contain meat. If the chef adds prosciutto or chorizo to a fish dish it is important to make that plain on the dish description. It’s also poor for waiting on staff to ignore the comments of the customer and make snide remarks.
The 2 issues ruined the experience for me and hence my rating.
