Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We visited as we walked along the canal. We found the snacks to be quite basic and a little bit expensive, however, the staff were very friendly, polite and helpful.
Beautiful garden with amazing hanging baskets!

Setting along the canal fabulous. Selection of rolls/sandwiches abit basic, need more variety. Tuna mayo roll tasty. Didn't find staff very helpful, abit abrupt (maybe the heat), couldn't bring salt and pepper to your table, get it yourself from the bar. Couldn't have lemon & lime in a pint glass, no ice creams in ice cream fridge (told wouldnt sell them as end of summer) Disappoint with the staffs' attitude.

Of course, the weather was wonderful, which helped the ambiance but we had a lovely time at The Blue Lias today, sitting outside to eat, watching boats going past on the canal. The food, fish and chips, was basic but good quality and well-cooked. The staff were pleasant and helpful. There were plenty of clean water bowls for our dogs, which I had to fill so the water was fresh.

Food is hugely overpriced for what it is. A breading chicken sandwich was simply 3 small finger fillets in a batch at a price of £8. I had just chicken fillets for the same price and asked if I could have a batch when the food arrived as I realised 4 strips of chicken wouldn’t fill me up. The waitress went to ask the kitchen and then came out and told me I need to go and get it myself from the bar and pay £1 for it. When I got inside I asked who I assume was the manager if I could have a batch. She fetched it for me and charged me £2!! The price was made up on the spot, when I queried this I was told that is how much they cost to buy?? Also when returning to my table after batchgate my chicken was cold! Would not return

Booked a table mid week for the following Sunday for two people at 1.00 pm. Arrived on time and when we tried to order at 1.10 pm were told "Run out of Sunday lunches". We had driven for 40 minutes to get there. Lovely weather and enjoyed the countryside on the way there. We could not believe it. We ordered from the very unexciting menu and ordered the steak pies. The pies were good but the chips looked and tasted as though they had been taken from the freezer and put in the microwave to warm through. No colour to them at all. Peas were cold. A customer on the next table told us we should get there at 12 noon to make sure you have a Sunday lunch and also said sometime ago, you could reserve a lunch but not any more. At 1.50 pm we saw Sunday lunches being brought out and questioned this with the bar staff. Chap behind the bar said they had reserved them and that they were 'regulars'. So that's it, you have no chance of getting a Sunday lunch unless you are a regular or you arrive at 12 noon. We shan't waste our petrol to go there again. I believe there are better pubs close by!!

Lovely position and very quaint. Very dated inside which actually adds to its charm. Nice to see a pub not swallowed up by the brewery or a chain.
Hanging baskets outside are wonderful. Staff were very friendly too. Its clearly family run and again that is lovely to see.
Unfortunately the food lets it down. After we ordered we were surprised that all our food arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. We had the specials - Chicken and Mushroom pie. It was clear by the taste and consistency that it was made with a tin of mushroom soup and they added cooked chicken and a puff pastry lid. Whilst it had plenty of chicken, this is quite poor by todays standards. Portions were small and the chips were quite under cooked on all our meals. Our childrens meals were all frozen and put in the oven affairs. Overall the food was more like a take away cafe than a pub.
However lovely for canal side drinks.

We have visited this pub many, many times but not for a little while now. The menu which used to be quite varied is now very small and consists of all friend food which is obviously brought in frozen. Breaded prawns, breaded chicken fillets, breaded cheese bites, scampi etc. The only thing which may have been cooked fresh was the pie.
The wine either comes in big bottles or the small bottles, nothing served by the glass.
The children's play equipment has been taken away and I have noticed when passing it seems to be less busy. Maybe they are making enough money from the caravans now that they don't feel they need to make the effort with the pub. The whole experience felt very cheap and 1970s.

We were on a short canal holiday and moored up beside what looks like a great pub... Shame we bothered.
What are the chances of trying to get food twice and twice being told the kitchen has just shut? This happened a lunch and AGAIN in the evening. Timings are not on display anywhere, no details on the menu at all... But no food after 8pm? Really?
Never been to a pub doing food that seems to have such short kitchen opening hours... Add to that the distinct, 'you're not from round these parts' vibe, comments and whispered remarks from staff and regulars and it's fair to say we won't be setting foot in this place again.

With lovely sunny weather, we came for an early dinner. My partner had fish and chips and I had steak and ale pie. The food was good - a swan wanted to attract my attention whilst we were eating and pecked my arm! Great location and friendly staff.

After looking on the their website and checking times for food service ,we drove 50 mins to have lunch out .On arrival at 2pm and rechecking on sign displayed it confirmed that food is served until 2.30 pm .After asking for menus at the bar ,the greeting was ‘no food ,kitchen has closed !’ We asked what was the reason and response was ‘we have been busy ‘,we then asked was it possible to have something cold that did not involve cooking? No ,was the response ! So with an eighty year old on a stick ,70 year old and 2 fifty -somethings ,we had a round of drinks , 2 packets of quavers and 2 packets of crisps . 5 stars for the quavers and another 5 for the crisps.Very unhelpful staff and surely the idea of hospitality is to be busy and if you advertise that you are open for food you fulfil that criteria ...not decide to close kitchen because ‘ you have been busy .!

We had a two night stay at the pub and it’s adjacent camp site. Set on the banks of the canal, the pub is in a lovely location. The staff couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful and the food was excellent value for money; unpretentious pub grub!
The camp site was huge! Really attractively set out around a few ponds, it had a terrific shower and toilet block, spotlessly clean and providing private, piping hot showers.
We’re already planning a return visit.

Beautiful setting but that is where it ends. We visited here for some food as a family. We were tired and nearing the end of our canal boat holiday. We wanted good food and a nice evening. The weather and setting were almost perfect. The pub lacked in service and quality. We waited over half an hour for someone to take a drinks order. The order came and was wrong. The menu is limited at present, not very exciting at all, I had a cold sandwich which was average to say the least with a bit of lettuce and cucumber on the side. We asked for condiments which never came, our drinks were wrong and the request to look at desserts was forgotten. A group of lads behind us were swearing loudly but they didn’t stay long. We only got their attention as we got up to leave and we needed to pay for our final drinks bill. Walk on to somewhere else!

This review is solely about my experience at this inn, not the caravan or camping site attached.
Start with the positives, lovely setting, outdoor seating area and a quaint building on the outside…there it ends.
The interior is set in a time capsule of the 70’s. Drab interior with old heavy chairs, sticky tables. They set in booths which were small and claustrophobic, the decor was sad. The menu was the worst I’d seen with very limited choice and looking at the plates of food coming from the kitchen very drab sad looking. My wife and I chose the only thing with liked the description of, the Chicken in a mushroom sauce from the “Specials Board”. It certainly was special, tasting like half of cut up chicken breast, swimming a what tasted liked a tin of cream of mushroom sauce…disgusting.
I just wonder what sort of people leave great reviews of the food! Needless to say we won’t be recommending or returning.

Camped here visiting family at the Blue Lias, Sunday dinner was lovely just like a proper home cooked Roast. The regular meals we could not fault either and they also do a Specials of the day menu. The service was quick and friendly and staff always went the extra mile to accommodate requests. The views of the canal were amazing and easily walk into the town to find a few other pubs and coop. Wash facilities were always clean and well maintained. We even managed to visit the Carboot sale on the Wednesday which my daughter's and friend enjoyed. We enjoyed the 4nights stay and would like to thank all involved at the Blue Lias

Just called in for a family meal and drink after a quick visit for a drink last week. The pub location is excellent and last week we had a wonderful relaxing drink. Today, however, was shocking. We ordered our first drinks and food at the table then proceeded to wait for over an hour for our food. Other people who arrived after us were getting their food near enough straight away. We asked what was happening and eventually we were told that the order had not been put through. The landlady (I presume) offered us no apology at all and basically didn't seem bothered whether we had a meal or not. She said you can wait if you want or not in a not very amiable tone and walked away.
We did then get our food and ordered more drinks. Then the same happened again, we waited and waited for our drinks. We had to ask again where our drinks were only to be told that 1 of the drinks had run out. I had already heard the same barmaid tell someone on the table next to us that the drink had run out over 15 minutes earlier. She had obviously forgotten our order again. When she did come back we cancelled our drinks order and paid and left very disappointed.
Such a shame for a wonderful pub with a great setting.
