We wanted to enjoy a good traditional Sunday roast without having to cook it and opted for the Coach & Horses , where we've had several memorable meals over the years. We booked a table in the dog-friendly section of the restaurant but we arrived in time to claim a table in the garden for a beautiful al fresco meal. The tables, both inside and out are well spaced out and ordering at the bar was safely catered for by a temporary one way system. The meal was everything. we'd been promising ourselves and more! Great service rounded it off for us. Many thanks, we'll be back soon!

This is mine and my families favorite pub in the area, they are always very welcoming. We came unbooked on a very busy help out to eat out Wednesday and we were still able to order food which we were very grateful about. The food isn’t amazing and to be picky it would be nice to have a little bit more interesting flavors ie lamb, monkfish, exciting veggie dishes however the food is tasty. Nice outside area which is very dog friendly.

My daughters and I booked a table for lunchtime on 9th October and we had a lovely meal. I had the liver which was cooked perfectly and my daughters had ham, egg and chips and we all had sticky toffee pudding after which was to die for. Great service, lovely and safe ambience, all in all a great visit.

My first visit to the coach and horses in many years . I have heard many rave reviews about this pub and restaurant . Obviously difficult times atm , but you entered through one door and left by another . The staff were very pleasant . We waited for an hour for our food order .When it arrived, two out of our four meals were extremely disappointing , & very pricey for what it was . Will certainly not be returning !

We chose to have Sunday lunch following a walk on Chelwood Common. I called the day before having not received a response to my online booking. The manager was super helpful, he confirmed he hadn't received my booking (this did sound unusual, so perhaps I'd done something wrong my end). He was able to squeeze us in the bar which I was very happy with. We arrived to find a lovely cosy table next to the open fire. Staff were all very friendly although not very efficient (e.g. when bringing items to the table they never took away what was finished with; they brought a pot of tea but no milk or sugar etc). Menu read really well, it was a tough decision to decide, but we all went for Sunday roast which was priced at £19 for sirloin and £15 for butternut squash wellington. We assumed that this would be a decent portion for this price but in fact it was very mean. Two thin (4mm) slices sirloin, a small amount of (varied, well cooked) veg, a large (but tasteless) Yorkshire, a little (tasty) gravy on the plate (not enough to help the yorkshire) a few roast potatoes (which were obviously pre-cooked, cooled and then warmed through, leaving them hard and not pleasant). The restaurant and bar were full, with tables obviously there to celebrate something special, and there were lots of dogs in the bar. I can only imagine that the rest of the menu was better given the popularity. We enjoyed the whole ambience, and would go back, but definitely wouldn't order the Sunday roast again, which was disappointing due to the portion size, terrible potatoes and overall value.

There is only one option for vegetarians. It was labelled butternut squash pasta but it was actually a yellow rissotto stodgy mess. It lacked flavour and presentation costing £15. After a day looking forward to a meal out it was a dissapointment. My meat eating boyfriend said his food was nice, but didn't think size and quality matched the price of £15 but more like £10.

We have enjoyed eating at the Coach and Horses over the years. However over the last 18 months we have noticed a decline in the food standards. We had stopped visiting but as reviews had been consistently good the last couple of months, we thought we would give it another go. We had starters then a burger and soy glazed trout with glass noodles. I am not a fussy eater and have never left a plate of food when eating out. However whilst the trout was excellent, the noodles were completely inedible due to the high salt content. When the plates were cleared away I explained the problem but the gentleman I spoke to, who I believe to be the owner, was indifferent to the fact I had only eaten a part of my meal. We waited for at least 10 minutes for dessert menus or some response to my complaint but were completely ignored. An apology or even just recognition of the issue would have been nice, Every kitchen drops the ball occasionally. It is how front of house responds that counts. We visited due to 5 star Trip Advisor reviews which we simply cannot reconcile with our experience.

My wife and I have been going to The Coach & Horses often over 15 years and we love the atmosphere, the good food and the friendliness of the staff. However on are visit this Saturday evening we were, for the first time, badly let down. For the main course my wife had the trout. It was the smallest portion I have ever seen. I had the Rib-eye steak. It was very good and cooked medium rare, but the chips only had a quick dip in the fryer. They were soft and very white perhaps just blanched ! The worst thing about this evening no one came to ask us, or the table to the left of us or to the right of us" how was the meal" served to this 3 tables. That was really bad for a place of this standing. Both my wife and I would have returned our meals. When the waitress did come to clear our plates it was too late. She did offer to give us a free desert or a coffee. We did not want either. However when the bill came nothing was taken off. So we did not enjoy one of our first nights out to a restaurant after the lockdown. Before I had booked this restaurant my wife suggested another one but I said no because the standard of the Coach and Horses was better! What a mistake I made! A great disappointment and what a let down. Richard

In a quiet road this is the pub we most like to visit . It is most welcoming and the food and drink are of the highest quality . But do not expect an over decorated ,over designed and modernised brewery owned establishment . Instead you get genuine rustic charm inside and a lovely large garden with plenty of tables . Ian Philpott is a hands on owner and could not be more caring of the customer . The menu caters for all tastes from fish and chips to burrata to baked cod , pork belly ( a favourite ) and more .

My wife and I booked for Saturday lunch here. As usual, there was a very warm welcome from the landlord, the Harvey’s was first rate and the general ambience and atmosphere about this pub - it was busy and buzzing with life - was just what one wants from a country local. As is always the case, the restaurant-quality food was the high point, my calves liver being quite excellent. Two courses with three rounds of drinks £65, so also excellent value. Tough times at present thus such a great lunch at The Coach & Horses a very welcome and enjoyable distraction.

I have been visiting this pub to eat for 20 years and have always found the food and service to be excellent however, things seem to have gone badly down hill. The menu was uninspiring and the main courses were very poor and did not justify the gastro pub prices. No one at any stage asked us how our meal had been so they don’t seem that bothered. I’m afraid I will not be returning until they sort out the kitchen.

After having been recommended this restaurant, I booked a table. I phoned the day before to ask about wheelchair access and social distancing space. I was told the tables are widely spaced apart and that the wheelchair could be next to the wall away from other people. On arrival, they had to disturb three tables of people to clear the way for the wheelchair. so we squeezed past lots of unmasked people. The tables were one metre apart if that. Customers were walking around without face masks. We waited 1.5 hours for our food, they had had a power cut so that I understand. However the choice of food was limited and some choices had sold out. The coke drinks tasted watered down. The burgers were nice. The steak was very chewy. Overall, I was gutted as I wanted to celebrate and treat my family. I would not recommend going here. Poor value for money. The table server was lovely but not very attentive to asking if we required anything else during the meal, like extra drinks. We didn't bother with deserts as the service was so slow.

Been coming here for four years and always had a great experience. All the waiting staff are friendly and helpful and its run by by people who really know had to make a pub work. It's a great location with lovely gardens, one of which is for adults only. Great wine list and a menu that delivers variety as well as the classics. I've had the fish and chips and its spot on but I can also recommend the light bites which are perfect to share over a bottle. If I am going out for lunch with my friend we never consider going anywhere else now! Just as well I don't live in Danehill!

Ginger Fox, The Griffin Inn and the Bull in Ditchling were fully booked so decided to try this pub. The menu sounds like a gastropub but as the result very average overcooked pub food. Sadly the whole family of six left disappointed..

We had an amazing meal and a fantastic evening at the C&H on the last night before lockdown, back in early November. Thus we thought it appropriate to go back on the first night of the new tier 2 rules. The pub was as welcoming as ever with the fire roaring away and a warm welcome from the landlord and his team. More importantly, the food was amazing, I had the garlic mushrooms and duck egg on toast followed by the bavette steak. Impossible to improve upon these two dishes, they were that good. My wife and daughter both had arancini balls followed by fish and chips, which they devoured. Harvey’s was, as always, superbly kept. Social distancing rules were in place, masks were worn by all staff, proof that the current restrictions do not have to spoil a great pub and superb dining experience.
