Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Large group of 17 were well catered for with a good menu selection - a bit cramped where we were but not so it spoiled the lunch. The onion and cider soup was fantastic- excellent sticky toffee pudding and my husband (a chef) enjoyed the...scotch egg started and his rice pudding Thank youMore

We have been on several occasions as a couple and with family. We love the pub and the food but puzzled by one thing - the manager has zero customer service skills and comes across as rude and uninterested every time! The deputy manger? manages...to make up for it and she is great. Hopefully the recent poor reviews about the food are a temporary blip. We have found the food to be excellent and the house burger is always popular.More

I never write reviews and never make a fuss in any establishments. This visit, however, deserved writing about. We came to this pub on a recommendation of our friends who have eaten in this place in the past on numerous occasions and were always very...happy. But boy or boy how disappointing our visit was - meat so chewy it was impossible to eat, duck was disappointing and so was the pork tenderloin. Staff not very attentive and pardon me for saying so - clueless about the menu, didn't know what ingredients go into each dish and had to constantly disappear to ask the chef about it. I did like a starter and frankly wished I had just ordered a selection of starters only in hindsight. Sadly, we will never be back I don't think. Not sure what happened to this place and why our visit was SO different from our friends one.More

Very disappointing. Duck and pork tenderloin almost impossible to cut. Having waited forty minutes we expected something better. The room was chilly with no atmosphere. Staff all leaving between 2 and 2.30pm. Puddings quite good but expensive.

Best roast beef in the area. My third visit in the last couple of years and it gets better and better. We had a family Sunday lunch and were all very pleased with the friendly service and exquisite standard of food. Will be returning more...often.More

This is our favourite pub to go to after a walk in Sheffield Park. There is an enclosed play park for our elder daughter and an amazing garden with loads of seating. There is a delicious, seasonal menu. We often pick lots of starters/small plates...and they are perfect for lunch. The kids meals are excellent too. They have two ales on; Harvey’s Best and a guest ale quite often locally from 360, long man or Bluebell brewery which are expertly kept. The staff are always friendly and welcoming. And Doodles the pub dog is lovely too!More

Lovely village pub. Superb food. Best fish and chips I've had for a long time and my wife had Tbone steak cooked to perfection. Good range of beers. Lovely welcoming staff. Will go back again.

A gorgeous pub, first time here....we sat in the beautiful beautiful garden...ordered from the bar and served outside. Lots of choices on the menu, I had the baked Camembert, hubby had crispy chilli Beef, and we shared paprika chips,(try them, so delicious) all of which...was really really nice food..but I also want to try those lovely mussels I saw next time 😋 I LOVE the gorgeous dog, Dougal, you're not allowed to feed him, but it doesn't stop him being your best friend, and joining you. He will sit by anyone's feet in the shade under your table, before moving on to the next one. He doesn't bother you, he just joins you lol. Check him out table surfing. What a fantastic lunch it turned out to be. Inside the pub is quirky and bigger than first appears, like the tardis....lots of rooms for dining. It's the epitome of a perfect English country pub. The surrounding countryside is so beautiful. The staff are really pleasant, the service impeccable. We can't wait to return, even though it's 50 minutes drive from us. Well worth it though.More

Went for Sunday lunch. I had fish and chips - was super. My wife had penne pasta and sea food - it was superb. The starters were all very good and tasty. There was nothing I could find fault with - therefore 5 star rating....They also answer the phone when you ring them - that's always a positive!More

Visited this pub today for lunch after a walk in Ashdown Forest and felt as if we had chanced on a hidden gem! It has a beautiful colourful garden for sunny days with plenty of tables and is on a country lane so very peaceful....We saw it also has a smart dining room and also bar dining for cooler days. We both enjoyed fish and chips - they do small and large options of this, priced accordingly, so we had one of each. Small is probably more suited to a child or person with very small appetite but hubby gave me some of his fish to top my portion up. Very tasty and perfectly cooked. We only had soft drinks so can't comment on wines etc. The pub landlord has a lovely golden retriever who does the rounds of diners hoping someone will be a soft touch - menu says please don't feed the pub dog:-) We intend to return sooner rather than later!More

What a fabulous place to go for a lazy afternoon. The pub is spotless and the staff are the epitome of professionalism. We are addicted regulars who always leave with a smile on our face. The food is absolutely superb (we 've never had a...bad meal) and the prices are very affordable given the excellent offerings. Whether sitting inside by an open fire in winter or enjoying the beautiful gardens and vista in summer - it doesn't get much better than this venue in the area. The wine list has enough hidden gems to keep even the most critical connoisseur interested. Thank youMore

It's been some time since we dined at the C&H, we were warmly greeted and enjoyed our drinks in the beautiful garden with our dog. Really pleased the C&H retains the classics on the menu such as the cheeseburger. We chose the linguine dish, so...delicious and well presented. The staff were really friendly. We will most definitely be back. Thank youMore

Absolutely dreadful food. Flavourless, overcooked and obviously past the sell by date salad. Battered fish was all batter and no fish cooked in old oil. Cold chips. Would never go back.
