Really quite disappointed with our experience at The Star. Having heard the food is now good here again, we booked a table over a week in advance for 7.30pm on a Friday night. We arrived shortly before 7.30 wanting to have a drink at the...bar prior to sitting down and ordering food. We were told if we didn’t order by 7.45 that the kitchen would close as we were the only reservation, at this point we should have noted the alarm bells ringing and just gone to The Angel or Megdhoots! There were no bottles of Prosecco despite emailing in advance to ask for a couple of bottles to be chilled in the fridge (one of our group had been told previously that they’re known to just leave them in the cellar which isn’t quite cool enough for chilling wine) only the mini ones priced at £9.99 each. The bottle of wine we did order was already open with a glass missing from it, this was obviously sorted straight away but not the point really. I should also add at this point, other than two people at the bar, we were the only customers in the whole pub so there’s no excuse and also absolutely no atmosphere. We were told when ordering that we couldn’t have steak as although the butcher had delivered them, they’d not had time to prepare them, why this was I have no idea as the place was dead! The starters we ordered came quickly and were lovely, the mains followed a little too promptly afterwards but were equally tasty, well presented and nicely cooked. We decided to skip dessert and go somewhere else altogether for another drink after our meal. On paying the bill, we’d been overcharged for all of our drinks. The two bottles we had were £10 more expensive than when one of our group had been in just one week before hand and we were just told that the manager had put the prices up! £10 per bottle in the space of a week is pretty steep to say the least! Even with the greedy increase, we were overcharged even on top of that. At this point two more customers came in for a drink and they too complained at the price of two spirit and coke mixers that came to £20 and the coke was flat, the response being the manager is away. Perhaps the manager shouldn’t go away if she can’t leave adequately trained people to cover the pub? I couldn’t help but feel really sorry for them at being left to pick up the pieces and look after such a badly managed pub. There is virtually no seating outside to sit at the 4 tables (I think they had 4 chairs between all these tables) and just a general lack of attention to detail about the place. A pub in the heart of town should not be dead on a Friday night- this spoke volumes! This place seriously needs a new manager as the food is good, everything else just lets this place down! We’ve not heard anything but negative comments about the manager here, it seems many local people share the same opinion. Such a shame, fullers usually run reputable establishments and as I say, the food is good but due to front of house issues, we won’t be rushing back.More
