We went to The Crown for dinner with some friends. After lockdown we were all very much looking forward to it & had researched somewhere nice to go that was also doing EOHO. We chose The Crown as we always had nice meals there before. Since Covid they have transformed their garden into the restaurant moving the kitchen outside. Unfortunately it was raining when we arrived ( had been for an hour or so) We were shown to our table. Half of it was soaked. They tried to encourage us (6 pax) to sit on one side. We said we would prefer a different table. We got a new table once they rearranged things around. Every restaurant is doing different things under the guidance for Covid, The Crown has the app for ordering, they leave the food and drink on the side and you serve yourself. It’s not my favourite approach- I feel at this calibre of restaurant the service could be greatly improved. If they can take away your plates not sure why they cannot serve? Now to the food- it was all very average. Bavette steaks were cold, the fish was over cooked and slightly dry. The accompaniment salad was also very disappointing. (The desserts were very good but just very small for the price so not value for money at all) It just didn’t work. I gave the restaurant feedback when they asked for it via email afterwards. They phoned me and offered 10% off next meal but I told them that that was not enough of a draw back especially not when there are other restaurants on same price scale and even cheaper that are just way better. When I pay for a babysitter and a taxi I am already invested in my evening out. Needless to say I didn’t hear anything back afterwards. We won’t be back and sadly I definitely wouldn’t be recommending.

I set my expectations too high and was disappointed. The prawn cocktail for £12 was poor. Yes, a few juicy tiger prawns, the rest looked like it had been made by a 9 year old. It came with some decent bread with a small bowl of virtually frozen butter which was unspreadable. Fish & Chips all came in various irritating bowls. The fish was nice enough but the batter was stupidly crunchy. Chips were over cooked. Peas saved the plate. Wait staff were pleasant enough. All up, nothing special at all. Over priced for very average food sold on the back of previous fame.

Went for dinner with friends. Quite complicated to book a table for 2 families which required multiple phone calls, an email and a call back. Quite a nice setting in the marquis with a view of the chefs at work. Was a little bit cold and didn’t appear to be any option of heating. Lots of servers, but service was not particularly attentive & there was a reasonable delay between hearing our food was ready & it being served. I had the halibut with seaweed butter, samphire & peas. This sat in a pool of it cooking butter which overall was quite oily & needs something to cut through this. Had to have a side with it to make a meal. Truffle fries did not have much truffle flavour & came with a big blob of Mayo on top which was a bit overpowering. My husband had the flatiron steak with chimchurri which I believe was ok. Kids mains were reasonable size portions. 2 adult mains, 1 truffle fries, 2 kids mains & 2 scoops of ice cream with 2 pints, lime & soda and a Diet Coke came to £108 with service. Unfortunately overall left feeling quite disappointed considering the price.

We came to The Crown after a few years’ absence and were totally disappointed. We were at a loose end and decided to visit an old favourite but feel we wasted our time and money. The roast is no longer worth the £30 price tag, the gravy has lost it’s special status and the service is just nowhere near what it needs to be or used to be. Roast potatoes disappointing too. Sad.

We dined at the Crown last week and enjoyed a meal in the tent in the garden. We persuaded friends to join us there tonight but I now wish we'd have gone somewhere else. We had to eat inside because the tent was unstable in the wind. This wasn't a problem. The problem was that when we arrived they had sat someone else at our table and so they didn't have a table for us. We were asked to wait in the garden in the strong winds and freezing cold. We were told it would only be 10 mins. After 15 mins we were shown to another table in the garden where there was a heater. We were kept waiting at this table for another 10 mins. Eventually we were told they had a table for us inside. It then took another 15 mins for someone to take our food order - I had to actually go up to the bar and ask for our order to be taken. The waitress rudely rolled her eyes at the waiter as she came over. Our table was booked for 8.15pm and our starters eventually arrived nearly an hour later. They were tasty. The manager brought us a complementary bottle of wine, which was very nice of her, but two of us weren't drinking wine as we were driving, so we didn't get any benefit from that. Two main courses arrived with some side dishes that we hadn't ordered. It was obvious there was a mix up and we'd been brought someone elses meal, but they said they couldn't take the main courses away as we'd placed a knife and fork onto the plates. The waitress returned and said that the chef had given us two portions of fries and a bowl of coleslaw because he knew we'd had a bad time! I don't believe that - why would he give us two portions of truffle fries when we already had "normal" fries with our meal? The other two main courses took ages to appear so it was obvious that the main courses we'd been given were meant for someone else. Either that, or the chef can't get four main courses ready at the same time, but I doubt that is the case. The food was tasty, but the mushroom burger was just a mushroom in a bun - very expensive for what it was. We paid the bill and then, to top it all, about 5 minutes later the manager came over and apologised that the bill was wrong and that we owed another £41!! I feel sorry for the manager as I think she was let down by incompetent staff. It was like a Fawlty Towers episode! I was so embarrassed that I'd recommended the restaurant and the whole evening was a catalogue of disasters.

Arrived at Sunday lunchtime, four friends on a pretty wet Thames Path walk seeking pub hospitality, some warmth and a bite to eat. Granted, this is fine dining bistro food and we had not pre booked. Happy to just have burgers or cod-finger sandwiches at one of the outside tables, under the rain dripping courtyard awning. From the menu's on the tables. Alas, the dismissive bar manager advised the kitchen schedule could not cope with our request. Crisps, chips ( basic, not 3x cooked) and 2 pints at £36 our only option - taken... But as we were about to leave, salt was truly rubbed in when aforementioned bar manager appeared to offer us a cancelled table for 'some starters or something...'. No thanks!!

So me and my girlfriend walked in with a polite welcoming from the staff and was sat down at a table in the garden which was well layer out etc! - we ordered two soft drinks and our food at the time! My girlfriend had the fish and chips which were £20.00 and I went for the burger! I asked the member of staff serving us how big this £14.99 burger was and she said “yes it is very big” then proceeded to ask me if I wanted chips or salad and I said chips. Little did I know the chips were an extra £4.50 - so we’re now looking at a £20 burger and a £20 fish & chips. Fine I don’t mind paying good money for good food. The food was honestly the most disheartening meal I have ever received! A Big Mac from McDonald’s is more filling and is priced at £5 with chips and a drink! And the fish was so small aswell. I was honestly shocked and I can’t understand how they are getting away with it ! AVOID at all costs ! Overpriced.

After booking a table 4 weeks ago, we had to wait 20 minutes for our table as the lady said she couldn’t ask the table before us to wait at the bar for their taxi to arrive. After finally being seated, the drinks took half an hour to arrive and the service was slow overall. We asked for more gravy with our roast and were told the chef couldn’t give us more and then 10 minutes later, our waitress arrived with a tiny pot of extra gravy for 3 of us to share. I also saw one of the chefs touching his nose on multiple occasions which is extremely unhygienic when handling food. We used to visit this restaurant regularly but since the new ownership, the quality and experience has suffered considerably, such a shame!

I've been going to The Crown for years and always loved the food, athmosphere and service. It was always a special occasion dining there, but not so on the last occasion. Everything has seen a noticeable decline. Service: I booked three weeks ago with a written wish for a specific table. I never recieved a response that that table would not be available. Upon entering the pub we were told that the table in question was not available and we were escorted to a table in a completely different (and much less athmospheric) area of the pub (at the back) and were asked to sit near a family with two small children who were literally throwing the toys out of the prams. We had to ask two different people to be moved and finally we were moved to the middle area of the pub (still not our preferred area). The Italian waitress was very kind in doing so (but no so the pub hostess, who was completely inflexible and disinterested in our preference). Food: The prawn cocktail which my daughter loved so much has now gone from the menu. We ordered burgers and a ribeye steak. The fries which accompanied all three dishes were uninspiring and firmly on the cold side and the ribeye was tough. At £35 a pop - that's not acceptable. Again, the Italian waitress was very kind and accomodating when we asked to send back the steak. The fries which came with the second steak were much fresher (as was the steak) - that's what they should have been in the first place. Athmosphere: The lovely fireplace is not working any more - presumably becasue of regulations. As a result the pub has lost a lot from its charm. Summary: Unjustifiably high prices for average food and snobbish hostess. There were three gentlemen sat next to us who also commented regarding the poor quality. Evening salvaged by the lovely Italian waitress who was friendly and accomodating.

A really good set up out the back under the Marquee. Good atmosphere However, the Prawn cocktail was very poor. No seasoning, no paprika. Pathetic amount of prawns, mainly avocado and lettuce. The fish and chips next. Fish was 4 inches square. Batter delicious, chips up there. However, those that had this course agreed that the mushy peas tasted of washing up liquid. Nothing was done about this. Whilst the young waiting staff were very helpful, the 12.5 % service charge for 6 of us, was unwanted and excessive. We were astonished by the final bill for a seriously UNDERwhelming experience

The Crown is lovely for a winter visit, but cones into its own in summer with a large garden to the rear with food service. The garden is never over crowded and it’s a lovely setting. Food has been good on every visit but sometimes service can be a little slow. Staff are always friendly and polite though. Bonus is plenty of parking.

AWFUL!! Even though we stated this was a special occasion Birthday we were sat on the worst possible table on the side of the marquee balanced on a bit of astro turf which once you stepped off you were in mud as nowhere near the heater and completely open it was freezing cold. We did ask to move but were told the empty tables inside the marquee were going to be pushed together for a bigger party. Not only did this not happen the tables weren’t even occupied the whole time we were there. Also worth noting that the pub tables had better protection and that the other table behind us in a similar position surprisingly remained empty. Sitting people who are eating at a table clearly not suitable just smacks of pure greed. The food was medíocre at best but considering what your paying and that it was cold within 2 minutes would push the mediocre to an extremely poor. Service was pretty clueless bordering on rude, We were asked rudely that we had to vacate the table at 7.30am, we did have to point out we would but we were still waiting for the bill we’d asked for 15 minutes prior, For a total of £326 for 4 people with no pudding and drinking one of the cheaper bottles of wine you would be hard pushed not to find any establishment offering better value. Also the toilets are DISGUSTING covered in poo and wee at 5pm!!! Bad enough normally but during a pandemic unacceptable and unsafe should be enough to shut the place down!

My first ever visit was for Saturday lunch. We were unlucky with the number of young children and yapping dogs. Service started off well when restaurant (circus tent) was less that half full but later on it took forever to get the attention of a waiter. The orzo and burger was bland, so much so that one of our group asked for some Tabasco sauce to add to her orzo, which she has never done in the 30+ years of knowing her. Like other comments the battered fish serving looked more like fit for a child. One of our group asked the waiter what fish it was, now bear in mind this was a STANDARD item on the menu it was a surprise that he had to go check with the kitchen. I would not go back even if I won lunch or dinner as a prize.

Whilst it no longer seems to be part of the Heston empire I've had a couple of really great meals here in the past and a return trip felt like a good idea. We went a couple of days before indoor dining was allowed but that wasn't an issue - the open sided "tent" in the garden was really nicely done and there were a few fan heaters around to keep it warm enough too. Probably one of the best examples I've seen of a restaurant/pub re-working their outdoor space due to Covid and turning it into something really nice. The kitchen and bar were along the wall in the tent too. I had the potted trout to start which was really nice. Followed by the burger for which I had very high expectations from previous memories. It was nice but not quite as good as I remember. I paid the extra £3 for the treacle cured bacon which was a good choice as it as a nice thick slab and was very tasty. It did take the cost of the dish up to £22 which is about as high as a burger ever gets. Beef patty was nicely cooked and tasty and I thought the raclette cheese went very well too. On ordering I did ask if the burger sauce could be kept off and was told this wasn't a problem as it was served in a pot on the side but it turned out it was spread on the bun as well so product knowledge wasn't great. Chips and fries were both excellent, especially the chunky ones that came with the fish, not advertised as triple cooked but did seem like it. I had sticky toffee pudding to finish which was fine but not overly memorable. Overall I think it has gone downhill a little and got a fair bit more expensive than it used to be but it was a solid lunch and I would go back.

Look, it’s very pretty, nice atmosphere, nicer staff. The outside space is exactly what you want in COVID times, and the staff do their best to maintain excellent protocol. The outside menu is reduced, which to me suggests the food should be better than good -> perfect. Spoiler; it’s not. Not sure if we caught them on an off night, but the £20 half chicken was overcooked, and the £20 burger was gone in two minutes or less. It’s not in line with what you expect from Heston. Okay, so it’s not trying to be the Hinds Head, but the prices do conjure a certain expectation which is not delivered. Way better pubs in the area. The tents might not be as fancy but it’ll save you £100.
