About
CAMRA Kernow pub of the year 2014, Having been here for over 19 yrs, Mark & Rachel take pride in their community pub. They offer home cooked food to suit every family member & a warm welcome from staff & locals. It is however best to book in advance for tables of 5 or more to avoid disappointment. Kirsty's hairdressers is located in the car park available by appointment. There is also a micro Cornwall County Community Library sit & read or take a book home. Its Annual Charity Ale & Music Festival which takes place 10 weeks after Easter to coincide with St Day Feast Celebrations is a treat not to be missed with everything for the family.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a very friendly welcoming community based pub. It is spacious and comfortable serving good food at very reasonable prices. We had two ham and turkey pies with mash and veggies, a whiskey and ginger ale and sparkling water for £31.90. Real comgort food and we left full up without space for a pud. There is a spacious carpark, you need to enter your registration on a computer in the pub. We will definitely be back again!

What an amazing pub, the staff were so friendly and helpful. We had a carvery, which was absolutely gorgeous. The meat was tender, the vegetables were freshly cooked and plenty to chose from. Would definitely recommend and we will be back soon. Well done to all involved in making our day special.

This was by far the worst carvery I’ve been to mainly because there was no meat! The table had been booked in advance but when we went to get our food were told by Mark, the owner, it had been a busy service & there was only “scrag ends”left. All he could offer my husband & myself was a very bland, pale, rubbery, tasteless chicken breast (done quickly in the microwave?) & a strip of thick bacon he said was gammon. All the carvery meat had gone! The veg was OK, not brilliant & not very warm. We asked for a price reduction, we didn’t get one or any other goodwill gesture. Poor service!

On a sunny bank holiday weekend, thought it would be nice to sit in the garden, have a few drinks, some food and partake in the pub quiz. On arrival the staff weren’t particularly welcoming and made comment about us being a large group (family of 7). Not thinking much of it, we sat in the garden to enjoy our drinks. At 5.30 we decided we would like to order food (the time the kitchen opened) so went to the bar to be told ‘how many of you, to which we replied 7. To then be told we’re very busy we won’t accept food orders for more than 6 unless you pre order’ now we completely accept that if the pub is busy there could be a wait on food…. The pub was empty and although there were reservations, the tables were free until 6.30/7pm. No offer of a pre order for later and no offer of small bar snacks, just a rude response. It made us feel like we were very unwelcome. We finished our drinks and decided to go to the St Day. It’s a shame because if we had been made to feel more welcome, we would have spent money on drink, food and quiz. And definitely returned. But as locals, instead will avoid this pub and spend time in friendlier local establishments.

Were sorry that you had a bad experience at the Star Inn. As you state in your review it was bank holiday weekend & we were heavily booked for food that night. We are a small family run village pub with a small kitchen, to that effect we only have two tables to seat 6 people for parties of larger sizes we have to pull tables together. That evening we already had bookings of 6 or more at 6pm, 6.15pm & 6.30pm respectively, there were individual bookings of smaller parties on other tables. Unfortunately as you can see we did not have anywhere to seat a party of 7 at 5.43pm when you came in to order, for us to cook & serve the food, for you to consume it before the other tables would be required for those that had pre-booked. We do make every effort to accommodate larger parties but unfortunately at busier times ie bank holidays it is not always possible. We do advertise that it is advisable to book in advance for tables of 5 or more to avoid this very situation. As you stated you were locals we were surprised that you had not seen the blackboard by the entrance that states this along with the very same information on our social media platforms. In fact whilst checking our CCTV we did note that one of your party (a lady in a blue hoody without one of your 4 dogs) stopped & read the sign. Although we try to accommodate everybody we can't always do this to the detriment of those customers that have taken the time to book. Kind regards Mark & Rachel

Perfection!!! We went for Sunday carvery, we had one meat eater, one vegetarian and one vegetarian coeliac. The food was perfect, everyone was catered for, dietary ingredients explained clearly and vegetarian and gluten free catered for. Everything was delicious, staff were first class, friendly and welcoming.

What a great local pub this is, lovely land lady, land lord and brilliant staff, we were here for a week and visited every day for breakfast or lunch/dinner or just a drink. So friendly, made us feel like honoury locals. The food was excellent, we tried breakfast, very reasonable price and tasty and also dinners/lunches all excellent quality, home made too. All I can say is I wish it was our local. First meal we had was Sunday carvery, this was fantastic. Local people were very friendly too. Thanks for everything, including the celebration of life buffet you put on for my Sister, you made a difficult day feel so much easier. Best wishes Rachel and Mark from Michael and Ange from Stevenage.

This was the first time we had been here after other friends had recommended it. The food was good, but a very limited menu ( which we understood) , my criticism is that though we were in the dining room, nobody came to say that the kit was closing (8.30) did we want dessert!??

I have never placed a review before but this has to be said. My partner and I have just visited The Star Inn Vogue for a meal, we have been before on a number of occasions and the food has been good, tonight however was a completely different story, we booked a table and arrived on time, we ordered a starter to share Nacho's followed by Ocean pie & Veg and a homemade cottage pie and veg with a side of chips, the nacho's were bought to the table with the side of chips, I questioned why the chips had come out and was informed by the young waiting staff that they were not told any different, then within a minute both mains came out and again when questioned the bar staff were blamed for not putting it in separately. We eat a little of the starter then left it as the mains were going cold. The mains I will start with the cottage pie, the mince tasted like and looked like tinned, the ocean pie only had a few very small prawns under the mash not other fish, both mash potato toppings tasted like processed mash and the Veg for both mains were cauliflower and three slices of carrots which all tasted frozen not fresh. My partner and myself tried to eat a little of the mains but couldn't we finished our drinks and went to pay The bar staff asked how the meals were and I informed them we had left them as not good at all, she asked why and I explained all the above the waiter was also at the bar at the time and he nodded in agreement when I stated the potato tasted processed, the veg with frozen, the prawns were chewy with no other fish. The bar staff did offer to get the landlord but I declined stating I just wanted to pay and get out but wouldn't be back, we are part of the pubs winter trade but not anymore. I have been unable to give The Star any rating it was that bad, however I did pay as the staff need their wages

I'm sorry your visit with us was so disappointing but I am confused as to why you would pay for something that you were obviously not happy with & not give us the chance to rectify by letting the staff call the my husband the landlord over, who was actually stood a few feet away at the other end of the bar ?? Firstly I think there was some confusion when the Nachos were ordered after the mains & it wasn't stated that they were meant as a starter (this was clarified by it being the last item on the order ticket) all the same the staff should have asked & they have been instructed to do so in future. Our starter menu is quite often used as mains or accompaniments. Secondly the mince for the cottage pie comes from our local butcher & is not & has never been from a tin ! I'm not sure what happened with the ocean pie as again the fish is locally sourced. Thirdly our vegetables are not frozen or mash processed & as you've eaten before with us there has been no change what so ever in the preparation of our most popular meals. I'm not sure what the waiting staff were nodding at but it wasn't in agreement to that statement. Although I can clarify that on checking the CCTV you did leave most of your food, we would have been happy to not charge you & to assure you that the staff would be paid all the same. I apologise for not recognising you, your partner & dog as regular customers. We would be happy to refund you your meal if you'd like to pop in & accept a complimentary drink as this is not a regular occurrence as you can see from the majority of our reviews.

Wonderful lunch here today, 16 of us ordering lots of different dishes but the staff coped admirably and with great good humour, really made us feel welcome. We had pre-ordered before our walk so only had to wait a few minutes once we arrived to be served. Tasty, generous portions, just the job! Thoroughly recommended.

Went with the family and kids for a good day out at the pub and when i say it was amazing, i mean it. The service was absolutely amazing and the staff were so nice. the food was cooked to perfection and, for a moment, i thought i was dining in Gordon Ramsay's restaurant because of how mouth watering the food was. Overall i recommend this pub to anyone who is willing to have an orgasm because of how amazing the food and service was. I actually did myself!

Comfortable, cosy, warm, village community period pub on the edge of St Day. Breakfasts, teas, lunches, dinners and special events, such as Burns night with a piper!, all available. We had a lunch of fish and chips and it was very good. Beautifully cooked. I think I had the best seat in the house on the sofa in the bay window with the sun on my back. Reasonable prices and good service. They have a wide selection of beers and lagers including John Smiths, which my partner had not had for years. He certainly enjoyed that . They also house a community library. Definitely recommend as an enjoyabke venue which has not been spoilt by crass updating

Warm and cosy pub with an interesting community library. Good selection of local ales and ciders. The service was a little unfriendly and very slow but all in all it did the job for what we needed - a warm meal on a very wet September evening after a soaking wet bike ride. The food was quite average but filled us up and was piping hot.

I'm sorry you found the service a little unfriendly & slow (not quite sure what you mean) you haven't mentioned what the meal was so it is difficult for us to make the appropriate amendments for the future. Maybe a little more info would help in any more reviews you leave for either ourselves or other establishments. We hope the rest of your journey was better.

Before I start the review on food you have to understand this is a community pub, not a 5 star eating establishment. If you can handle this then you will not be disappointed with your visit and especially the food. We visited for Sunday Carvery and I was blown away by the quantity and quality. We were there early and joined the queue at 1230. Choose between 4 meats or even a bit of all 4, then stack up with veg, perfectly cooked. Pork for me was slightly over done but that was the only gripe. Roasties were best I’ve had at a carvery and the choice of remainder was great. We were so full we couldn’t fit in a dessert even though there was a 20% discount if paid for with carvery. Staff very friendly and helpful and for those into their beers a goodly selection of cask ales and ciders. All in all a great visit. We came here because of the appearance on Jeremy Vines radio show of this establishment so be prepared, if you leave too much on your plate, eyes bigger than belly, you may be charged for the waste. In my opinion nothing wrong with that. Well done to all at The Star at Vogue, loved it!!!

Like to put pen to paper when things are good, so a detailed review below. Right I live in Carharrack so we often go for walks to the pub in vogue. The main reason is the selection of ales/ciders x 5 and they are swooped out regularly, I dont think there are many pubs with a selection of drinks like they have here. There are some nice touches, retro free credits on an arcade game with the kids love. Great big beer garden and covered area, large car park. Don’t forget to put your reg no in on the touch screen). Will split the food into two reviews light bites and carvery. Light bites, holummi cheese ciabatta sweet chilli sauce and chips. This is very good value, generous portion and tasty, my 3 daughters love this meal. Had liver and onions, fish goujons, burgers.. all spot on. Carvery, I’m a bit of a carvery snob there are many local places… but imo the star is one of the best, mark is very generous with the meat When compared to others, there are normally x 4 to choose from and the meat is sourced locally in st day butcher which I I over heard why.. the quality and I won’t disagree the meat is first class. Good selection of veg, lovely spuds, gravy and sauces. We have had puddings we’re normally stuffed but if the kids have one we tend to share are there on point. We are becoming more of a regular as you can’t get this kind of quality elsewhere. The ale festival is really good as a local event, large selection of drinks. Good entertainment and again good..give if a try Oh and Rachael, Mark and staff all friendly and take time out to speak during their busy lives.
